  • Re: Why do people give Atkins up after experiencing success?

I've been really busy so i haven't been on this board much. I strayed off track from my modified diet the last few weeks or so because it's the holiday season and me and my co-workers were recieving care packages full of goodies. i didn't gain too much weight, maybe 5lbs at the most but i always worked out . i was depressed, sure the food tasted good but eating lots of junk food made me sad, like i was back to my old self. i went back to my strict diet again but you know what it made me feel good about myself that i was eating healthy. prior to the junkfood binging i was still eating at a Stage 4 Atkins lifestyle and it was only these last few weeks i was eating like crap(in my opinion). Anyways I'm going to finish strong until next month because i come home from deployment! =) I'll still be exercising and eating right when i get back, it's just these last few weeks are crucial because i want to look my very best coming off that plane. I still look pretty darn good and i think that's all that matters.

Good for you for being determined to get back to eating the Atkins way after eating those 'goodies'! It is such a pity that wellmeaning gifts at such a time cant contain more healthy 'treats' but at least you havent let yourself give up on your former healthy eating habits!

Best wishes for a safe and healthy last few weeks on deployment.

I wouldn't say it was easy getting back to an atkins diet recently but it was definately rough the first few days. i was still experiencing cravings and i wanted to cheat but i kept at it so i feel like my old low carb self again. i'm going to eat this way until i come back from deployment and then i'll probably move back to stage 4 of the low carb lifestyle.

I haven't fallen off the Atkins wagon since I started more than three months ago...but in my case, with every other diet, it was always that I would cheat once and then just give up. I figured since I had cheated in the morning, I might as well cheat in the afternoon, and at dinner, and then the next day too. Before I knew it, I would have gained back all the weight and then some.

I haven't done that with Atkins, and I certainly don't intend too...but I can see how it could very easily happen.

You have put your finger on a problem that many Atkineers have, Kathy.
The 'I've blown it so I might as well give up for today' thought is one of the most destructive ones, and for many of us needs fighting against. Especially because after one day off the WOE many people have problems getting refocused and one day turns into weeks and sometimes years of high carb eating.

My personal problem with falling off-the-wagon is family gatherings. There's so many sweets, which are my downfall. I didn't do as bad as I have in the past this year though. I volunteered to cook for everyone the other day and made all Atkins freindly food, except for mashed potatoes. But I left them alone. My SIL brought bread and brownies, didn't touch the bread but couldn't resist the damn brownies when she put them on the table. I did only eat two though. The relatives are all gone now so I'll be getting back on track.
