  • How do you react to sugar now?

Some of us in maintenance have allowed special treats, or fallen off the wagon, or simply been served something by accident with sugar in it. If you have, have you noticed your body reacts differently to it?

The last two times I had a real sugar dessert I got so sick I was up half the night vomiting. If I just have a high carb meal, I get gas and cramping and other intestinal upsets, for up to two days.

While this is some serious motivation, it kinda makes me wonder what's going on. Before I started Atkins I didn't really have a problem with gas or heartburn or nausea or any of that stuff. I can certainly understand reacting to increased carbs, but it really surprises me that a few bites of a brownie could cause me to throw up.

I'd love to hear any insight and see if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

    Laura

P.S. If you think your diet drink may not be diet, don't keep drinking it...

In the summer I picked up some schweppes vodka coolers (i buy them all the time) but accidently didn't pick up the 'light'version. sitting in a friends backyard, i was almost finished the first bottle when i noticed. I became really lightheaded which was the thing i noticed the most. My stomach did get a bit upset, but I think that was almost all in my head.

The reason I had even noticed the label, was because i really started to feel dizzy..I figure it was a blood sugar spike.

That's the only 'real' sugar i've had in a substantial quantity. I'm sure i've had it in sauces etc as well..but I haven't noticed any discomfort from it.

I break out a bit, but that's it. No intestinal distress, no major energy zapping, no nothing.

Honestly, it sucks. I wish the price was higher for me. It would have prevented me putting 15lbs back on!

Brook - no you don't. It's good for motivation to avoid planned cheats, but accidents can be killers. Seems I made a bad choice with some meatballs and it was a hellish day... (And after the food poisoning from undercooked meatballs, I think I'm just taking those off my list.)

Sadie - it's interesting that you got dizzy from too much sugar. I usually hear it when blood sugar drops. Have you noticed that alcohol itself affects you differently now?

Yup, it does hit me faster than it used to (i'm a cheap drunk now ), though it doesn't normally make me feel dizzy like that...was almost like it hit me faster with the sugar...normally it takes more than one cooler before i feel it.

The other day Pizza came into the house because we had folks over... Now, as tempting as hot pizza is, I just ate the cheese and roni.

Later that night, the gas, cramping and expolosive BM, came on.

Same thing happens if I eat low carb candy.

Just not worth it to me.

P.S. Has anyone ate pizza from the store???

Re: How do you react to sugar now?

Since I've added more carbs back to my diet I have found that my stomach is sick feeling a lot and that I get heartburn almost every night. Yes, that does curb the carb cravings because you don't want to feel so icky. My husband thought it odd that it began after I had started Atkins and wondered why it never did it before.

I guess it is like when you have allergies. The dr takes every possible thing that may be an allergen from you and gradually adds them back in to see how they affect you. When you start Induction you limit your carb intake and as you gradually add things back in you see how they affect you.

If that be true, then I'm allergic to milk and certain sugary foods because I get sick soon afterwards with either an upset stomach, diah or heartburn.

                  Odd how this comes about.

I get a severe head ache from sugar now. Usually within about 30 minutes. So does my husband but his is almost immediately.

Now sugar alcohols on the other hand. Those are the devil. I can't tolerate even a small amount as they give me the ability to self propel myself forward or upward, or at least make me feel that way. lol!

Interesting how we react differently now.

My mom mentioned that after she'd done Atkins for awhile she felt ill after eating sugar and someone told her that was proof the diet was bad for you. Um, I think that shows us that sugar's the problem and we should probably all consume a lot less of it!

Funny how people want to blame it on Atkins, yet if they went to a dr and he removed foods out of their diet and added them back in to test what effects it had on them -- they would take it seriously. Obviously, sugar is not good for our systems.

Oprah had a show where one of the guests actually said that sugar ages you! Eeek! Sugar is not our friend.

I really don't know; I just avoid it like the plague it is! The more I read about sugar feeding cancer, etc., the more I realize that it is the MOST DETRIMENTAL SUBSTANCE ON EARTH.

I accidently drank 4 vodka cookers a couple of months ago that I thought were sugar free and weren't. My rosecea (skin condition) flared up severly for the first time in almost 18 months. I didn't realize it until a few days later, what had caused it...my rosecea has been barely there since i started atkins, i thought it was the ater i was drinking..it must be the sugar.
