This thread has been such an eye opener! Though I am still 30-ish from goal, I have had a battle of the bulge going on for about 8 months. Going into induction and losing the 2-3 lbs water and then sitting at that weight for weeks. What I just realized I hadn't been doing was making sure my fat was high enough. Thanks to all for sharing! I gave it 5 stars 'cause it totally deserves it!

Hey D! I'm working on losing 5 over right now, I've lost only 2 in a week and a half! it happens to the best of us, as you can see. I'm so happy you stopped by this thread. Don't be a stranger!

Sorry to hear you're feeling low drosa. It's true that maintaining is quite a balancing act sometimes. I'm sure that with a few tweaks and experiments, you'll get back down again. When I started to put on a bit, I just tweaked the usuals (cheese, wine) and lost again, but it took six weeks!!! Then... I couldn't seem to stop the loss!

Currently am trying to introduce a few more good carbs like nuts and fruit. It's nice, but is messing up my percentages (not that they were ever perfect before).

Sally, have you not been eating fruit all this time? I still only eat berries and freak when I eat blueberries because they're higher in carbs. We have some peaches right now that smell fabulous, but they scare me!

Silly... I've always had (well, since the fruit rung of OWL) the occasional cup of berries and cream for pud, yes... like maybe once a week. Also, in the summer, I have "prosciutto e melone" (parma ham and melon), but I've only ever dared have like three or four cubic inches of melon. Like you, the fruit scares me. So many carbs!

The extra fruit that I'm having nowadays is apples or peaches... but again, very small amounts (less than a quarter of an apple/peach). I have this fruit mixed in a tablespoon of oats, with a couple of tablespoons of mixed chopped nuts, then add mock "milk" (watered down cream)and a bit of splenda... makes a kind of breakfast muesli which is a nice change from my usual protein breakfasts. So far so good.

C'mon D, you know nuts are evil! Ditch those and continue to eat berries!

Sally, Oh good, you do eat fruit. I had melon & proscuitto recently, but really, I ate mostly all of the ham and DH had the melon! I also had one bite of a watermelon recently because it smelled sooooo good!

The berries, I typically have 8 large strawberries or 1/2 cup blueberries. That's alot of carbs I know, but I keep it within my budget.

                      • Re: Maintenance Frustration

I think I could pretty much live happily the rest of my life with induction + veggies + dairy + berries/melon. Every now and then I'll throw something else in for fun, but those rungs are just my basic diet. I haven't ever had fruit give me trouble, but the only thing I miss is mangos and the reason I stay away from them is because the older I get, the more allergic to them I become.

I pretty much have to stay completely away from peanuts. Have to be careful with other nuts. However, I got some Larabars 2 days ago and they are made with fig and nuts and depending on the flavor, sometimes other fruits....but they didn't give me a moment's trouble with cravings...and I'm still in ketosis. Soooo, those might be a nice treat to have once in a while.

I'm still trying to get 3 lbs off from my binge a few weeks ago. It's just not budging on the scale nor the tape measure. Here's the kicker tho...I FEEL thinner and I SEE thinner when I look in the mirror. So, I dont know what's going on LOL

Oh Joy! I'd hate to be allergic to mangoes, or other fruits... even though I don't eat too much.
If you feel thinner... and you see thinner... then I bet you are thinner . The scales will catch up and the tape measure can be rather imprecise depending on how much we tighten it!

Drosa... I so agree about nuts being sooooo good. Silly's right though, they can be evil! I manage to keep quantities down by adding them to yogurt etc. If I eat them on their own, it's hard to stop.
They're sooooooo good for you though, too; all those antioxidants! Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Silly... how brave to attempt watermelon!

I must say, that so far, increasing the fruit a bit and the nuts hasn't had any negative effect on my weight (if anything I'm veering down), but it has reduced my protein a bit.

That's where my problem has been....TOO MUCH PROTEIN. Yet, for the amount of calories I eat....1700 calories (my minimum according to my Resting Metabolic Rate--professionally measured) times 30% for protein....that's 510 calories and 4 calories per gram of protein means 127.5 grams of protein per day. According to other charts I've seen (can't rememer where, but I have seen them before...and Condor's experiment) say to keep protein less than 100 grams a day. (However, I usually eat around 2100 calories and can still feel hungry).

ON TOP of that...I'm just having a hard time getting fat up without increasing protein.Cheese has protein, broccoli has protein, eggs have protein, I mean...without funneling pure olive oil directly into my mouth, I'm just having a hard time. And, I *DO* use butter and olive oil to sautee my foods.

I guess I'm just going to have to figure it out somehow...either that or just quit stressing over it altogether....go back to counting carbs and that's it. If I lose, I lose. End of story. Blah!

Sally, I'm not sure its an allergy in the typical meaning of allergy...but I definitely have issues with them...getting a rash like poison ivy. Boohoo!!

Allergy: The common forms of allergic reaction to mango include bullous cheilitis, urticaria, and contact allergic dermatitis from contact with either the sap of the tree (eg woodworking or climbing the tree) or from contact with the skin of the fruit. Mango has also been associated with respiratory and food allergens. In a large study from France 6% of severe food allergies were due to mango. Cross reactions: Other anarcardacea spp, particularly cashew nut and poison ivy (Rhus or Toxicodendron). Mango may cross react with various respiratory allergens including mugwort pollen, birch pollen, celery, and carrot. Latex allergy (and therefore possibly papaya, avocado, banana, chestnut, passion fruit, fig, melon, kiwi, pineapple, peach, and tomato).

here's the funny thing about avocado...I love it....but I get stomach distress when I eat them. Like a stabbing pain right through the middle of my stomach. I can only eat it in small quantities.

Why, oh why can't I have allergic reactions to sugar and flour instead of mango and avocado?????????
