  • Re: Maintenance Frustration

I'm up a pound and a half today. 179. Now, just last night I was okay that I was up to 177. This morning I am NOT okay with 179. Especially since I've been being VERY strict. I *think* I just realized where the problem is.

I've been using GNC's Women's Ultra Mega Bone Density w/o Iron and Iodine formula for about a year off and on. I hadn't been taking it for over a month. Monday night I went and bought some and began taking it Tuesday night. Anything I ingest usually will show up a day or two later on the scale. So, I looked at the vitamins this morning, the "other ingredients' are: Cellulose, Titanium Dioxide (natural mineral whitner). Vegetable Acetoglycerides, Natural Vanilla Flavor, Carmine Color, Sucralose. Sounds, okay, right?

There is another little line that says: "Contains: Fish and Milk"

How much milk? I've eliminated almost all dairy from my diet. So, I highly suspect that these are the culprit.

    Grrrr!

That's another thing about maintenance. If I eat/drink/ingest anything that is unusual in my diet, I gain not ounces but POUNDS. It goes up in about two days and it will take me WEEKS to get it back off again.

Crap, Joy! Why in the h*ll does that supplement need milk in it?!

You have certainly had your share of hidden ingredients doing a number on you. (I'm still can't get over corn syryp being in unsweetened tea!)

Hopefully, you can get over this easily. Hang in there, girly!

But Joy, how the heck much milk could be in one pill?? Then again, they used to claim there was 8 ounces of milk in one Kraft Single, and I always wondered how they got all that in one little flat piece of cheese, too.

I know how sensitive your body is, though... so it makes sense. Let us know if eliminating them helps... like Mitzi said, hopefully your body will bounce back quickly. Hang in there, my friend.

Hey Joy, I feel your pain. I remember drinking pints of Crystal Light way back and freaking out when I realised what was in it.
I don't actually take any suppliments (which I know might be a little contraversial here) but after years of using them I didn't acutally think they were doing anything for me. However I did have kidney stones a while back and the specialist thought I might have too much calcium already so warned me off taking calcium suppliments even. All my medical results have been excellant after years of low carb so I haven't got my head around swallowing pills everyday.
I don't know what to suggest but I realise how frustrated you are. I am really liking the high fat as I am down another lb today in the middle of tom. I am being very precise about the percentages and as long as I stick with it - it seems to work for me. I am not prepared to do it for too long as it can be, quite frankly, boring. You lose your appetite so much that eating become hard (and it shouldn't be about that). Can you believe that I am doing this on around 2,000 cals a day, but 80% fat!
Let us know how you get around the suppliment thing.

Hiya Claire... tks for the update!
Nice to see/hear about everyone's progress. The high fat eating is interesting. I too have a pretty high fat diet, with all the wonderful olive oil here. Italians toss all veggies in it, so it's easy to keep the ratio up.

Doing good on our March push... scale has reversed the trend and is slowly creeping down.

Hi guys down another lb. I know I keep saying this but this high fatting weight loss feels so different to the normal low carb. I can really see a difference in tone. I am coming to the conclusion that when you do this you loose real fat straight away and little water weight. (Obviously no hard scientific evidence there). I have just had tom and no moodiness, no cravings, no bloating, in fact I hardly knew it was there. I think in future I would do this for a week once a month just to have that. An example of what I mean by "tone", is less "muffin top" syndrome when wearing skinny jeans lol. Anyway I'll keep you updated, Sally I love, love Italy and the food in fact you've reminded me to remind my DH to take me back to Firenze for a week he's been promising for ages. Hope you guys are all doing ok.

Welcome MS! You will find alot of interesting posts in this thread, we don't post here alot but we do like to update from time to time. It can be comforting to see when you're not the only one with the same issues..not that I want anyone else to have to struggle too..but it makes me feel better when I know I'm not going it alone!!

Seems like this winter there are a few of us with the winter weight gain..and it doesn't seem to matter on the cliamate which is interesting!

Hi MS, here goes my menu from Monday. Please bear in mind that when I high fat my consumption of veggies goes way down. As I only usually do this for around two weeks I think this is fine for me. Also because the fat is so high the carbs remain low, the hard part is keeping the protein level lower. However after a few days the lower protein is easier due to the high saiety effect of the fat. In fact some days it's harder to eat than others, I just follow my appetite. Exercise and water consumption is the same as always.

Coffee x 2 with 4 tbspns heavy cream and 2 splenda
3 large eggs w/ 3 slices of emmental cheese cooked in 2 tbspns lard

130grams tune in brine w/ 4 tbspns mayo
                      1 cup of cucumber

twice a day I have 2.5 tbpsns butter mixed with splenda and cocoa

This works out approx. 1966 cals: 180g fat: 15g carbs: 75g protein

                      82% fat 3% carbs 15% protein

Coffee is my breakfast and with the cream it helps the fat.

Hope the above came out clearly. I use PC fitday to help with the details.

MS, it's not that you can't have the veggies by any means. I am using up my carb. count on the more rubbishy stuff like splenda, cocoa and coffee. If I were having more veggies than I would be adding quite a bit of butter or oil to get the fat % right. Because my appetite after 11 days is now so small, I am finding it easier to eat the butter cocoa/splenda combo because it's a very small amount and you wouldn't believe how it curbs that appetite. However if you love your veggies then go for it, just get the ratio right.

BTW you would need to experiment with yourself to see how much protein you can get away with. I find more than 70grams of protein I get hungry again by bedtime, but you may find you can get away with more. I am no expert, by any standard, but I tried this last year and had great success, what I have found useful is using the pc fitday. Yeah, there is measuring involved but I think it's worth the one/two week experiment.

Warning, the first couple of days I felt a bit out of sorts. That is, hungry sometimes, not hungry, craving protein etc. but it does go away. One very good sign for me is that I do feel very thirsty, for water, which must mean something.

Last year when I finished I more or less went back to my type of maintenance which is slightly higher carb.(more veggies and nuts etc.) I have whole rungs that I don't use as I am not in to fruit, never eat it ever (a few berries when the mood strikes), never eat any grains but I love dairy and oh dear, love the alcohol.

It's been a while since we've posted in here so I thought i'd post an update. I tried high fat..still nothing! I'm running regularily again which is going to make a difference i'm sure in at least inches. For my food I've read Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat Feed the muscle, the lower carb plan is very close to Atkins maintenance (aside from being low fat). I'm not really following it, i'm sticking with my maintenance, but more using it as a guide. he recommends having any grains carbs eariler in the day, a protein with every meal, starchy veggies later in the day, and 5-6 small meals a day (every 3 hours) as well as cardio and weight training . Because i'm running I'm keeping my daily carb intake at around 70g to 100 per day. Also keeping an eye on the calories, just in case..but i actually find i'm having a hard time keeping them up! The other recommendation he makes is to do higher carbs (all of this is acceptable 'good' carbs) every 3 days to keep your metabolism going..this part i struggle with..though i did manage to do it yesterday, hitting 200g's of carbs 3 slices of multigrain pizza, 2 apples, 1 grapefruit and 2 slices of multigrain toast mades sure of that! My body does pretty good with grains and higher carbs as long as I'm running regularily which i am now. i've started a journal too so i can keep track and see how i do with this. Not sure if i'm going to do the higher carb days every 3/4 days or not..i'm still pretty carb phobic. I went into shock when i saw yesterdays numbers! Though i am sure i wont do much damage as long as long as i watch my calories those days which shouldnt be too hard.

It's been 2.5 years now since i've gained (10 lbs, could even be 15 i haven't weighed in ages) after reaching goal, i've tried everything, even being in ketosis for months..nothing. So hopefully the higher good carbs and exercise might give me that little boost.

                              How is everyone else doing?
