  • going up the ladder but keeping carb count low?

I'm very metabolically resistant. I don't have any problem staying around 15 carbs a day - and have just finished induction.

What I'm wondering - has anyone moved up the ladder to add a few more foods, but kept their carb count low? So instead of adding 5 grams + the new foods every week; instead adding the new foods (like soft cheeses) but keeping the carb count low.

Is this stupid? Not recommended or recommended? I'm doing fine staying on induction - but would like just a bare few more things (cottage cheese, piece of fruit out of our garden (we have loads of fruit trees), etc.) but I'm not going to risk ANYTHING that is going to derail me.

Hunger and cravings are not a problem right now. Just don't want to get bored and was thinking of the possibilities.

    Thanks for your feedback!

Re: going up the ladder without adding carb grams?

Read through the OWL forum especially the stickies on the Rungs. What you're describing is a "Modified OWL" where you stay within Induction level carbs but move up. Essentially, you'll be swapping 5 nets of Induction carbs for 5 nets of OWL carbs. It's doable and the folks who have severe metabolic resistance need to do their OWL that way. But you'll need to be particularly mindful of the nutrient values of the foods you will swap.

My only advise is to swap non-vegetable carbs for the 5 net carbs because the Induction veggies (or any veggie/fruit for that matter) is more nutrient dense and will improve your general health more than 3 net carbs of Splenda, 1 net carb of coffee or tea or 5 net carbs of low carb ice cream.

Also, whie you are doing this, you might want to check if you can tolerate a slightly higher carb level. Dr. Atkins wrote that the folks who would benefit from an Induction longer than 14 days are those who have severe metabolic resistance to weight loss. This is because it gives their bodies time to correct or improve the factors that are causing the metabolic resistance.

For example, you are plodding on your Modified OWL for 3 months, you might want to experiment by increasing your carbs by 5 net carbs to see if you've corrected your metabolic problems enough to overcome your metabolic resistance. If you can, WoooHOOOOO! you'll be able to eat a greater variety of food, rather than having to swap 5 nets for 5 nets. If not, then keep on your Modified OWL.

Re: going up the ladder but keeping carb count low?

Thank you very much! I'm thinking of swapping for some nuts (as I travel a lot and they are an easy travel companion) or some cottage cheese, etc. Nothing major - as I LOVE my veggies. But enough to keep me in the 15 carb range and give me a little more flexibility when travelling (especially).

          Thanks for that!

Just be sure to make nutritionally sound swaps because you're getting a limited variety of food.
