  • OWL - How's It Working For You?

    Hey Gang!

Just wanted to check in with all the OWLer's and see how you are doing, how far up the rungs you've traveled and how you are enjoying the foods.

I must say that being on the berries rung (or just plain moving up the rungs) has sure made a difference in how I view this lifestyle. I couldn't be happier! My DH decided to join me because he said the food was so much better this time -- all due to OWL. Periodically, I make the Almond Chicken, Flax Muffins (now with blueberries) and various other new recipes from this board and Linda's site.

Please post and let us all know how you're enjoying OWL so that those contemplating staying on Extended Induction or moving up can see that there is life after Induction -- and it is a good life!

From my experience during these past three months I can now say that I can see making this my permanent way of eating. I'm content. Moving up the rungs makes it a joy to introduce new foods into your life. It is like a small celebration for sticking with the program and becoming more self-aware of how what you eat affects you.

We are on a journey of self-discovery.

    What an adventure!

I LOVE OWL!!! I wish more people would transition into OWL sooner rather than later because you actually LEARN how your body handles different foods and what exactly you should be eating!

When I was on induction, I felt a lot of fear with foods and found myself in a lot of situations where the food was simply not acceptable. Now that I've been in OWL for what seems like an eternity, I feel comfortable with all the real, nutritious foods....

Anyhow, I'm so glad you're enjoying OWL!!! I hope some others see this and follow your example of taking the leap! Honestly, I can't recall anyone ever regretting the move to OWL.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

    Vigilance, not perfection.

I've lost more and ate more on OWL than during induction. OWL is fantastic - and has taught me things about myself (and the way I handle food - what foods I can eat/ can't eat / should eat / shouldn't eat) that I wouldn't have learned on a 'typical' diet or on induction.

I wish I'd moved to OWL sooner... As it is - I"M LOVING IT!

I'm on the nut rung, will move to berry rung next week. Only nut I added was almond butter cause I can't control snacking on whole nuts. I love the dairy rung. Found some greek yogurt and limit myself to 1/2 cup per day. I lost 1/2 pound this week which I'm happy with since only have 10 pounds to loose. The most amazing thing is I have not wanted any sweets, only thing I have is a chocolate protein shake made with whey protien, 2 carbs. First time I did atkins I ate an atkins energy bar almost every day. Never could loose the last few pounds. I looked at them and some low carb chocolates at the grocery the other day and was going to buy some but realized I didn't want them.

Weeeelll......for the 4th time this year I'm going to give the dairy rung another try and if it still doesn't work then I'm going to skip it. I'm back on the veggies rung again while I regroup. I seem to fall of the wagon when I do dairy. sigh How sad to have to admit that. I've tried cottage cheese, other cheeses, ricotta and yogurt. I'm fine with cheese and I think the ricotta was okay. Cottage cheese and yogurt killed me. I don't care about milk so I probably won't even try it.

I've found if I get raw almonds, unsalted and plain walnuts for snacking...I'm okay. If I get roasted/salted nuts of any kind...I'm in TROUBLE!!! I love grinding the almonds in a coffee grinder and making almond flour to use as a breading for fried chicken, chicken parmesean, fried vegetables, etc. Also as a flour for making muffins...YUMMY. You might want to give that a try for your nuts rung.

Those bars are just not necessary to this WOL and I'm glad you've found that this time around.

That's what I'm thinking, Joy. But I like ricotta so I'll give in another go in a week or so. If it still doesn't work then I'll skip the whole thing and maybe try again in maintenance.

BTW, you look awesome. Very inspiring. I can't remember if I told you that before.

One of my favorite foods is chicken tenders coated with egg then with grated parmasean cheese then fried in olive oil. I think they are better than chicken coated in bread crumbs. I'm going to try some shrimp like this soon.

LIR what problem do you seem to have with dairy? You can't control your portions or it makes you crave?

I like ricotta cheese too....My problem with it is i like it with splenda and cocoa and i can't stop myself so i stay away from it usually.

I use the ricotta to make the Stella's NY Ricotta cheesecake...and I use it to make chicken parmesan...and occasionally I'll mix it up with some DaVinci syrup. I mostly use half and half in my coffee and every once in a blue moon I'll have some cottage cheese. I'm not that big of a dairy fan to begin with. Also, I think I'd rather use my carbs in other foods like fruits.

That's interesting how things effect people differently. I actually had yogurt for lunch today and it filled me up. I do know that ricotta is higher in protein which might help too.

Have you tried 'dry pressed' cottage cheese? It's very low carb and higher in protein than regular. Western creamery makes it. Comes in soft plastic rather than a tub. The only brand I can find is Western Creamery (loblaws and no frilss sell it).

You might find that a different brand of cottage cheese or yogurt acts differently on you. Worth a try.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
