  • Still Losing and Going Up Another Rung!

I have been losing about 2 lbs per week still and I just completed 3 weeks at 40 carbs on Rung 4. Right now I am just 4 pounds shy of the CENTURY mark, which I hope to hit by Independence Day. Today I start on rung 5 and go to 45 carbs, so we will see how I handle that. I think an 8 oz. glass of Chardonnay is in order tonight just to put it to the test!

    Hello, Don!

I swear, I was just wondering how you are doing. I'm so glad that you are keeping us updated on your progress.

The century mark... what an important milestone! This is really good news - I am very impressed. I think you have earned that legal glass of wine.

I completed my second week on Rung 3 Saturday, and although I only lost 1 pound rather than my usual 2 that week, I have decided to go ahead on to Rung 4. I have stayed at 40 carbs. I wanted to go higher before the berry rung, but I have a hard time getting my carbs up to 40. I figure maybe it will be easier to get there with berries. We shall see.

Thanks again for posting. I appreciate it.

Not a problem. I appreciate your support as well and love hearing about your progress. These boards are great for that.

Just thought I would also post where I ended up for my first day on rung 5.
1987 calories, 46 net carbs, 148 grams of protein, and 113 grams of fat. Ratios ended up at 51% fat, 30% protein, and 19% carbs.

Thanks Megs! Yeah it is pretty good! So many choices. Funny, I never thought I would struggle with trying to figure out how to get more carbs at the end of the day. A couple of days ago, I had not entered all my stuff in my calorie counter all day. After dinner, I was trying to figure out what I might need to round out my carbs so to speak. I was trying to see if I still had enough for a small glass of Shiraz. It wasn't until then that I realized I was still 15 carbs short. So, not only did I have the Shiraz, but later I had a nice dessert of strawberries over a couple of tbsp of sour cream sweetened with a packet of Splenda. Yeah, again I would say it is pretty good!

Re: Still Losing and Going Up Another Rung!

Well, I just wanted to let y'all know that it is still continuing. I just made it through three weeks on the alcohol rung and at 45 net carbs. After only losing one pound on week one, I lost three pounds on week two and week three! Is this great or what?

Now, I am moving up a rung and going to 50 net carbs starting today! However, I am skipping the Legume rung (I don't really like beans), and going onto the Fruit rung! I hope I'm not making a mistake! Any suggestions?

Re: Still Losing and Going Up Another Rung!

                    Do you really hate beans?

I would give rung 6 a shot for a week or two and try some foods you may not have eaten before. Have you ever had hummus? Do you like soy milk? Have you eaten edamame? Do you want to try baking with soy flour? I tried each rung and experimented with new foods, and I was COMPLETELY surprised with foods that I ended up enjoying--most often, they were foods I'd refused to try in the past.

I think it's a good idea to try these foods anyway, as sometimes they're added as ingredients in other sauces or dishes, and it's always best to know how your body responds to each individual food.

Another suggestion: If you don't go up a rung, why not stay at the current rung of foods, but add another 5g of carbs? That way if you have problems with the fruit rung, you will know it's a food or food group and not carb intake. But the beauty of OWL is that the choice is yours!

Congrats on the continued weight loss, by the way! I think your posts are really encouraging people to move to OWL, which is fabulous. Keep up the great work, Don!

Re: Still Losing and Going Up Another Rung!

Thanks Julie! Actually going onto OWL is the best advice that I would give to anybody! I really believe that is EXACTLY why I failed before! People ask me now what I'm doing to lose weight, and I tell them that I am doing Atkins, but the right way this time! With that, I then have the opportunity to explain it to them. When they hear what I'm eating, they are shocked! I don't know how many times I have heard, "that isn't Atkins!" LOL It is all an education. That is what I like about these boards. They are a wealth of information. You especially have been so very helpful and supportive to so many people. Keep it up!

Good advice. I will have to experiment some. I think some fried chicken done with soy flour is in order this week. I try some other things as well to see how I do. You never know. People oftentimes tell me that I don't know beans! LOL

I've done the fried chicken with soy flour, and it's pretty darn good! Make sure that you watch your oil temp, as soy flour browns quite quickly and can burn easily.

I hear ya on the OWL. I did Atkins before and stayed on induction forever. That's exactly why I failed--I had no idea how to eat! Now I'm doing it the right way. It's amazing how doing something correctly will give you awesome results, huh?

OK, I tried the Hummus last night, but didn't care for it too much. I bought Athenos brand with olive oil and black olives (which I love). I didn't like the texture. Maybe it would be better on a celery stick! I'll give it a couple more shots. I sometimes find that by trying something a few times, that I actually do start to like it. I wasn't much of a cottage cheese eater, but now I love it. Tastes do change! I did find a fried chicken recipe though that uses soy flour that I am going to try and am trying to find one for shrimp. My favorite is beer battered shrimp, but I don't think using light beer and soy flour will work! Anybody have any good fried shrimp recipes that uses soy flour instead?

Don, I usually eat hummus with bell peppers. You could also use cheese crisps? That would be something crunchy and salty to offset the hummus.

Heck, give the light beer and soy flour a shot. You never know! At least if you don't like the batter, you can drink the rest of the beer.

As for the shrimp, have you ever used coconut meal or flour? That would make a really good tempura batter...you could mix it with soy flour or just do the coconut by itself.

I love the fruits. Make sure you are measuring out the correct portion of each one for 5 net grams. A lot of them you can only eat half for now. In PM or Maintenance you may be able to eat the entire thing. And make sure you have them with a fat/protein. Half an apple by itself as a snack in the middle of the afternoon may cause blood sugar problems, but may be fine when eaten with a chicken drumstick. Doing Atkins the right way takes you to a Maintenance phase you can live with - good for you!
