  • Alcohol - what do you drink?

    Hi all,

    Because Atkins is a way of living, we cant say that we are never going to drink, because that is just not true.

    I would like to know what you guys are drinking and which drinks have low carb amount.
    This is a straightforward question, so no lectures please, just honesty.

    I tend to drink soda and vodka (not sure if thats ok)

    what kinda soda?

    I drink vodka and diet coke, but aspartame is a staller so i tend not to drink that too often

    Im a wine-o, lol... white wine and club soda by the bottle

    spirits dont have carbs you just gotta watch what you put with them!
    wine is about 0.9 a glass if i remember rightly just try and stay away from the beers!

    no lectures here!

      No lectures here either, but you say that you have only just started induction....... a little too early to include alcohol in your diet

            The OWL Carbohydrate Ladder
            The foods listed in each rung of the ladder below are examples of low AGR foods for their rung, unless noted to eat in moderation. This is intended to be an example of some of the foods you can eat, not an exhaustive list of all the foods you can eat. If you are unsure about where a particular food falls, just ask!


            1. Vegetables
            More salad and other vegetables on the acceptable foods list

            2. Dairy
            Fresh cheeses:
            Cottage cheese
            Farmer�s cheese
            Ricotta cheese
            Pot cheese

            Keep portions small for:
            Hard aged cheese
            Cream, heavy and light
            Half and half
            Sour cream
            Low-carb ice cream, yogurt, and milk

            3. Seeds and Nuts
            Macadamias
            Almonds
            Peanuts/Natural Peanut Butter
            Coconut
            Sunflower seeds
            Sesame seeds
            Walnuts
            Pistachios

            4. Berries
            Eat frequently from:
            Strawberries
            Blueberries
            Blackberries
            Raspberries

            Eat moderately from higher AGR melons:
            Watermelon
            Honeydew
            Cantaloupe

            5. Wine and other spirits low in carbs
            Spirits
            White Wine
            Red Wine
            Low-carbohydrate Beer

            6. Legumes
            Lentils
            Kidney Beans
            Pinto Beans
            Black Beans
            Hummus
            Chickpeas
            Tofu
            Soybeans
            Soy milk, unsweetened

            7. Fruits other than Berries and Melons
            Plums
            Kiwis
            Peaches
            Apples
            Grapefruit
            Tangerines

            8. Starchy Vegetables
            Keep all portions small
            Carrots
            Green Peas
            Acorn squash
            Butternut squash

            Eat rarely:
            Corn
            Potatoes
            Sweet potatoes

            9. Whole Grains
            Keep all portions small and focus on whole, unprocessed grains:
            Old fashioned Oatmeal
            Oat Bran
            Wheat Bran
            Low carb (soy) bread and muffins
            All-bran
            Barley, cooked

              I am really amazed, because on all other diets, we cant have so many things and then no wonder we fail. ;o)

                Its all about learning how your body reacts, experimenting with different rungs and keeping things to moderation

                  I usually drink 1 small glass of red wine with dinner during the week.
                  On weekends, I'll sip an Irish whiskey (Jameson's) on the rocks.

                  Before Atkins, I would drink a case of beer (IPAs) per week. So I've lowered my alcohol carb ingestion from 312g per week to 5g (and it shows).

                    One drink that I am looking forward to trying is a Mojito - it has rum, club soda, some crushed mint leaves and I think a slice of lime on the rim of the glass. I'm pretty sure that the total carbs is next to nothing - just what might come out of the oils from the mint leaves, and if you squeeze the lime in there.

                    Has anyone tried one of these?

                      I have tasted around and find that low cal beers, vodka and scotch are the most drinkable. I noted that many of my previous faves tasted punked to me (most notably red wine, cognac and regular beer).

                      The drier the better it seems. Fewer carbs (of course) and your low carb taste buds won't do weird things to it. Better alcohols taste better without mixers, so aim towards nicer brands.

                        How do you know what beer is low carb? does it say on the bottle? would the bartender know... What's a good low carb beer...? (I need names people!) I'm kinda allergic to wine... break out in hives... so not fair!

                              Alcohol isn't allowed during Induction. Period. But during OWL it's allowed when you reach the Alcohol Rung of the carb ladder.

                              Alcohol is a your mileage may vary thing. For some people it halts their weight loss. For others it doesn't.

                              The one thing that we do caution about is that some of us become "cheap drunks" even on just one shot of hard liquor or 1 glass of wine. So be aware of this.

                              Primarily, I use alcohol for cooking. A little bit adds tremendous flavor to foods.

                              Occasionally, I'll have a glass of wine. I limit myself to 6 fluid ounces---because dry table wines have about 1.5 to 2 carbs per 3.5 fluid ounces. So when I do that that glass of wine----it better be a very special/very good wine....none of that cheap or mediocre swill!
