Re: Alcohol - what do you drink?

I think I'll skip alcohol as a rung.
I never drink at home and only sometimes when I go out.
I dont see the use in starting to drink at home all of a sudden just for the sake of completing that rung.
I guess I'll just see how it affects me when the "opportunity" to drink arises.
    Should be fine, right?

Ha ha - you do not have to do a rung if you don't care for the food. Drinking alcohol is not a necessary requirement for successfully living the Atkins WOE.

Many people are lactose intolerant, or have severe allergies to nuts. They are not expected to consume those things merely because they are a level on the Atkins ladder.

Consider the rungs as things that you now are allowed to experiment with and add back in that you were not allowed to before. Not set-in-stone required components to successful weightloss.

i am very bad about alcohol.
i test software during the day , and coach high school football in afternoon, those coaches drink beer all weekend. some days i am strong, some days i am weak. when I drink I have lite beer. miller lite has 3 carbs, michaelobe ultra has less than 3 carbs. its bad , its terrible I know, I beat myself up. But I am honest with myself, and I will be honest with you, I enjoy having a few after a game.

This is very true on both statements. You can skip rungs if you know you won't be incorporating those foods into you diet. However, we don't advise anyone to skip Rung 1 because those extra veggies are just too darn healthy to skip!

Also, in Dr. Atkins' last book, Atkins for Life, he removed the "alcohol rung" from the OWL and Pre-Maintenance carbohydrate ladders because he encountered too many people using their carbs for beer, wine, and spirits instead of using them for veggies, fruits, legumes, and grains. Something tells me if Dr. Atkins didn't die and wrote a newer version of his diet, he would have zapped alcohol out of the picture, would have included more guidelines about the frankenfoods/sugar alcohols/sweeteners/etc., and expanded the Induction vegetable lists.

Wendy - Be careful with some of those flavored rums (coconut, mango, etc.)... They tend to be higher in sugar, than the plain! Check out this site for all kinds of nutritional info on alcohol:

However, to answer the question that was asked... The drink that I liked best is to take a diet A&W rootbeer mix it with vanilla vodka, then top it with a little heavy whipping cream. Divine!

And hopefully have included a section about how that 'time of the month' (aka TOM) can affect women in addition to his one mention in the 'tips' part of induction chapter 11!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
