  • Can't seem to eat it all.

I'm on rung 7, (skipped the booze) and by my calculations, I should be eating about 50 net carbs a day. I just can't seem to fit that much in though!
My 30 net carbs today(typical day) are from :

    4.2 oz kale
    3.5 oz cauliflower
    5 oz asparagus
    5 oz broccoli
    1 oz hazelnuts
    1 oz tahini
    19 grams pineapple
    3 oz port salut cheese
    coffee and cream

all that went with 4 ounces of polish sausage and 5 ounces of chicken leg and some pork skins, as well as olive oil to cook in and sesame oil for flavoring. That's enough food! How do I up that to 50 grams????? Is anyone having this problem?

290 lbs. on 11/02/07 Goal: 145 lbs. or size 14 whichever comes first!

Re: Can't seem to eat it all.

ah, i know that problem all too well, i reached 45-50 carbs on a few days but thats when i started off with yogurt and sugar free jam for breakfast, had almond bread and kohlrabi for lunch, a few peanut butter cookies inbetween, a massive greek salad for dinner and then grapes or maybe a glas of sugarfree pear juice.
most days i barely get to the 40 afaik but tbh i dont worry about that.
i havent left ketosis on the days i had 50 so im fairly certain its ok to go to that limit but i dont care if i dont reach it.
if this is what you eat and you are happy with it i would expect you'd just as happy with that on maintenance and with smthg extra that comes from the last rungs.
i guess though that things like potatoes or carrots later will easily help you reach the 50
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

Oh I wouldn't even try potatoes. Them and rice. I will do carrots on occassion. Still, it takes a LOT of carrots to up that count. Maybe I'll try some butternut.....

Using the USDA Nutrient Database Website http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcom...bin/measure.pl

          Veggies:
          4.2 oz kale = aproximately 2 cups = 10.7 net carbs
          3.5 oz cauliflower = 1 cup = 2.9 net carbs
          5 oz asparagus = slightly over 1 cup = 2.4 net carbs
          5 oz broccoli = almost 2 cups = 3.6 net carbs

          Nuts:
          1 ounce hazelnuts
          1 ounce tahini

Just a note about the Nut/Seed Rung. The OWL Amounts are 1 ounce, not 5 net carbs, according to the book.

          Fruit other than Berries:
19 grams pineapple = approximately 3 net carbs
(USDA website states that 56 grams pineapple has 7.3 net carbs. 19 grams is about half that amount.)

Cheese---1 ounce of the aged cheeses are counted as 1 net carb according to the book.

Anyhow, how did you calculate that on Rung 7 you should be eating about 50 net carbs?

Rung 7 would be about 50 net carbs if you didn't skip any rungs. Most of us ate between 10-15 net carbs during Induction. Therefore, when we moved to OWL, we added 5 net carbs to that so we ate 15-20 net carbs during Rung 1, 20-25 net carbs during Rung 2, 25-30 net carbs during Rung 3, 30-35 net carbs during Rung 4, 35-40 net carbs during Rung 5, 40-45 net carbs during Rung 6, etc.

Re: Can't seem to eat it all.

Hey Chicklady, I'm on rung 8 (skipped dairy, alcohol, berries due to food allergies). I'm having problems getting above 30 but maybe that's where I'm supposed to be considering I skipped so many rungs. Although I'm thinking it's probably more like 45 I should be getting. Some days I don't get past 20. I figure if I'm not hungry, I'm not going to make myself eat more...then I would not be following my body's own pattern of letting me know when I'm full (back to where I started with the emotional eating). I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. It seems to be working as does your eating for you. This is a WOL, we have to do for ourselves what we know is going to work for us in the long run so that we can maintain our weights and not go back to the harmful eating patterns we had before.

Not 2 late.... this is my math....
              Induction.... 20
              rung 1 ....25
              rung 2.....30
              rung 3.....35
              run4 4....40
              rung 5.....45
              rung 6......50
              rung 7......55
              I skipped a rung, therefore 50.
So I don't understand. What are you saying? And since when is induction 10-15?

Cat, I was just trying to follow the book. The last time I did this, I followed his 80's version and it was a lot less precise, so hey, when I added 40 grams of Mai Tais in, I WAS following the book This time, I'm actually watching nutrients too! I don't like the idea of popping pills for nutrients (too sci-fi for me ) and only take supplements if I don't reach a minimum of 100% on all my nutrients. Most days I do, although I have a tought time with magnesium, calcium, iron and vit. D Thank goodness coffee has magnesium Looks like that almond cake will be a good source of calcium too! I used to make cheesecake way back when and used almond flour, but I haven;t made cheesecake this go-round, cause I eat too much of the stuff!

So you ate exactly 20 net carbs during Induction? Good for you. Many of us eat between 10-15 net carbs because we didn't use all 3 sweetener allotments, didn't use cream daily, didn't eat all 4 ounces of cheese daily or eat many eggs or processed meats.

For example I ate 1 - 2 eggs daily (1-2 net carbs), 3 ounces of cheese (3 net carbs), and I ate no cream, no processed meats and used no artificial sweeteners, so my net carbs during Induction were about 15-16, half of which came from the 3 cups of vegetables. When I started OWL, I added 5 net carbs to what I was eating during Induction. So my Rung 1 total was 19-20 net carbs, and so forth.

BTW, I keep reading that 12-15 net grams should come from veggies during induction. Even if you're on the low end of that (12) and you add a couple of eggs and a few ounces of cheese, you're up to 17. Then how about seasonings? Didn't you use any herbs and spices? What is life without garlic???

The book says that the majority of your daily carbs should be from the veggies. I followed the 2 cups salad list and 1 cup other list vegetable pattern during my Induction and I found it almost impossible to get 15 net carbs from the veggies alone---unless you ate more than the recommended 3 cups of vegetables. Jicama is one of the only "salad" veggies that have about 5 net carbs per 1 cup. And it's not a vegetable that's available all over the country, nor it is always in a fresh enough condition to be worthwhile to buy.

I do know that the Atkins people changed some of the veggies around on the Induction list following Dr. Atkin's death. For example, they moved tomatoes to the "salad" list, which potentially means that someone can eat 3 cups of tomatoes during Induction. Besides being high in carbs, tomatoes also have a higher glycemic index. So I never understood the logic in that switch.

Garlic, I limited to 1 clove with my cooking, because 1 clove of garlic is roughly 1 net carb. Ditto for onion and other other spices I found that the more I weaned myself off the carbs, the more food had "taste". So I didn't need to drown my food in spices in order for it to taste like something---I was able to taste the foods enough to enjoy their natural flavors.

Oh and I know a lot of people ate foods in order to "make their carb level", but I think that directly contradicts Dr. Atkins advise to eat enough food to satisfy your hunger. So I never saw the point in eating a couple more eggs or a tablespoon or two of cream not because I was hungry for them but because my carbs were "too low". "Eating just to eat" or over-eating are bad habits to form and/or to perpetuate, imo.

But garlic is the food of the gods And it keeps vampires away!!
The thing I like about herbs and spices is not that they disguise the flavor of food, but that they can change the flavor of a single thing in so many ways. That chicken breast may taste fine plain, but spiced up it can take on a chinese flavor, or hungarian, or mid-eastern, or........
To boot, many herbs and spices are really good sources of vitamins and minerals. I just "spiced" up my pork rib with cumin, because it's a good source of iron, and pork isn't. I also frequently use poppy seeds to boost my calcium, because, despite the fat that I like cheese, it has a tendency to, ummmm, "irregulate" me?

I know that spices are great, but I don't use "a lot" of them in my cooking anymore---just enough to give it a hint of flavor, but not enough to drown the flavor completely. I used to be a vegetarian, so I used to use A LOT of herbs and spices to completely change the flavor or give flavor to a bland food.

I've found I don't need to do that anymore---the foods we can eat on Atkins are flavorsome to begin with. The herbs and spices only give it alittle "kick". I guess my approach now to herbs and spices is like my approach to using make up----use it to enhance the features you have, don't use it to create a totally different person. lol.
