  • Net Carbs Question/Sugar Alcohols

I was reading a post in an induction thread and I am totally confused now about sugar alcohols. From my understanding, we are limited to 3 servings a day, and I have been counting each one as 1 carbohydrate, even if the carb is 0 (like in a diet drink), I count for the sugar alcohol. In the information below, it looks like you subtract the sugar alcohol. I would think you would add it?? It could be that I'm looking too much into things, but please let me know if I'm doing things correctly! Thanks!

    Effective Carbohydrate Count (GROSS CARBS)

    Start with: Total Carbohydrates
    Subtract: Dietary Fiber
    Subtract: Sugar Alcohols
    Subtract: Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate
    Subtract: Glycerine

The balance equals: Effective Carb Count (NET CARBS)

    Re: Net Carbs Question/Sugar Alcohols

Net Carbs= total carb grams - fiber grams - sugar alcohol.

Some people subtract half of the sugar alcohol grams. Some people subtract all of it. Some people only subtract fiber.

It really depends on how your body reacts to sugar alcohols and all the other "non-digestible" chemicals they toss into those products.

You still are limited to 3 artificially sweetened or non-sugar sweetened products daily. When I began Atkins, I e-mailed the Atkins Center and they told me to count each serving of sugar substitute/sugar substitute containing food as 1 net carb.
