DH mentioned that he was hearing more and more about people having problems with Splenda (like the whole Aspartame thing). We are a big Splenda household. I did some research online and although I don't buy a lot of the "testimonials", I did notice that two of the symptoms that people seem to mention are things that I've been stuggling with. Anxiety and headaches.

I am going to switch to Stevia for a few weeks and see if the headaches and anxiety go away. I'll let you guys know. I guess everyone is different, so maybe I'm just sensitive to it. It doesn't affect my loss, but if I stop using it and the headaches and the axiety go away, then out goes the Splenda. Makes me wonder about giving to my kids. Maybe they should have Stevia too.

well are you using liquid splenda or packets? if it is packets could it be the bulkiers? Just something to think about there. I'm Splenda challenged too as the sweet taste from Splenda foods drives my cravings but stevia doesn't.

I use the packets. I only use it to sweeten my cottage cheese, and flax, etc. but I do eat it daily. I'm going to cut it out completely and see what happens.

I switched to stevia recently and i love it! took me a bit to get used to the aftertaste but i don't even notice it now. Splenda hasn't caused issues for me i just decided that stevia is natural and probably much better for me (i take in far too much splenda..).

The only downfall is that it's very expensive. Up here it's 11.99 for 100 packets at walmart, compared to splenda which i can get at costco for 4.79 for 100. I'm heading to the states next week so i'm gonna look for it down there at walmart to see if i can get it a bit cheaper (though i'm really doubting it. ).

I had to switch to Stevia to. It was causing fatigue and a face rash, not to mention all over body itching. The symptoms stopped after I had been off splenda for about 4 days. I am in the states, but my Wal-Mart does not carry stevia. I have to buy it at GNC for $11.99 for 100 packets! Ouch.

I bought a box of granulated Fructose for my kids. I put it in the sugar bowl. It looks just like sugar and they had no complaints when they put it on their oatmeal for the first time this morning. It's the diabetics sugar, natural fruit sugar, brand Fifty50. I hope it is a better choice than sugar for the kids. It has a low glycemic index and 4 carbs per Teaspoon. Any thoughts on this anybody?? 2big?? I don't want to give them sugar or splenda, and stevia is to expensive for the level of sweetness they are currently at!!!! Thanks, Trish

I will let you guys know...

Granulated fructose...interesting. I think I'd get that for my kids. I don't want them taking in Splenda...just in case, and I'm not gonna use it anymore.

(don't worry Loona...I'll still send you yours!)

Let me know how your kids like it if you get some. Mine didn't even know it was NOT sugar! I got it in the diabetic section. The box says you can bake with it, so I am going to bake some whole grain muffins with it (for them). Hope it works. Trish

                P.S. It's not expensive :joy

in the sugar to energy reaction the first reation is changeing glucose to fructose so it will be used as a carb fuel by them.

The lower GI comes from the speed of digetion of it as our body is looking first for the glucose molecules and sucking them up. GI is a speed effect how high the blood glucose goes in a certain amount of time not the total lenght of the rise nor the amount of cals the food provided for doigestion either. Just the change in a preset time limit from ingestion.

Some of the "sugar" use ofr diabetics has to do with the competiton of absorbtion sites theories in that the intestens are busy looking of rnand absorbing one thing already present in the food the other thing will slip by un digested. That is the theory behind the diabetic sweet product that combines fructose lactose and sucrose. Of course if that worked we could all eat Breyers akl natural fruit flavored icecream and be in ketosis still as only 1/3 of those total carbs would count.

Hi, uhhh......at the risk of sounding dumb....does this mean that fructose is better for my kid's or no different than sugar? Thank you. Trish

it will depend on what else they are consuming as to the actual results of that sweetner and their blood sugar health. it is the same stuff we find in fruits and veggies and the stuff they use as sugar in the nosugar added juices that have the pear grape and apple mixture in the ingredients list for say cranberry juice abd you always wobdered why the label just says cranberry or whatever flavor it is. As long as your stuff isn't the HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP dried as those crystals they should be fine eating it but sweetner is still sweetner and they should be cutting back period. After all it was the sweet tast of those carby foods that got most of us to the point we needed Atkins to lose weight and get healthy again. it is like black strap molassase is a healthier sweetner because it has iron in it but it is still cals going in.

                      Happy low carbing.

Good point 2big. I am trying to cut the sugar and sweet stuff down...but it is a major challenge. Here is a prime example. My kid's school has "cookie day", and lollipop day", they need to bring those quarters. If I say "no", they are crying, upset, feel left out, or, another student gives them a quarter! Don't even get me started on the holidays. They are all about sugar. Every Holiday seems to be celebrated with mass amounts of sugar. I wish I could find a way to stop it. I am very frustrated. I can tell my 7 year old already has a major sugar addiction. I could NEVER do this, but sometimes I fantasize that I've told her and her teachers that she is diabetic or hyperglycemic.......just to stop the insanity in it's tracks!

Today at school, it's cookie day. Tomorrow, they will get St. Patrick's day goodie bags, and Friday is "lollipop day. I swear, they are trying to kill my children, and the evil food industry could not be happier!!!! OK, I am ranting! I feel like I've lost control of my children's health. I do what I can at home, but school......geeezzzzz! What's a Mom to do?

I wonder if there is a difference between "high fructose corn syrup", and just plain "fructose". "Fructose" is what is listed on the box.

You mentioned about giving other food along with the fructose. Here is an example. Her morning oatmeal is old fashioned, whole grain, with cinnamon and the fructose. She eats it with sausage.

                        Thanks for listening. Trish

how about instead of the fruit sugar using some fruit to sweeten the oatmeal like rasins, banana or cooked apples then they get the sweet and the vits and minerals and the fiber from the fruit too.

COntact the school about the foods and say you are concerned about all the days focusing on sugary foods as those things don't help the kids behaivor nor their chances for avoiding obesity. You could offer some positive alternatives for the 25 cent sucker or cookie such as fruits especially for the kids with blood sugar issues.

And now Leslie that we have hijacked your topic how are you doing with the Splenda sweets withdrawals any?

leslie0021, Oh gosh, I am sooo sorry. 2bigs right, your post was totally highjacked! I am so passionate about my kids health, I just could not help myself! This week is a trying one, with all the sugar in school. How are you doing with the splenda issue? Sorry again....... :no

2big, I am going to make a trip to the Principals office....something has to change. I may have to get a colition of Mothers and really start something big. I'm not the only upset Mom.

I actually had boiled apple pieces in water, then added the oatmeal. It still was not sweet enough for her. Her tastebuds are already ruined. I have alot of work to do! I will fix this. Trish

ty backing her off the sugars instead of cold turky like add the fruit but cut the sugar in say 1/2 then in 2 weeks cut it to 3/8th and so forth in 3 months the kid is sugar free and doesn't even know it.

Stress blood sugar and dental health when discussing the issue with the princilpals i'm sure their has to be some alternatvies in place for diabetic kids,
