  • I found a yogurt I can eat! I think?

Living in Canada it seems to be a lot more difficult to find naturally (or maybe not-so-naturally!) lower carb options. All the plain yogurts seemed to have 15g and upwards of carbs per serving. Yesterday I went to 3 different stores on a hunt, and found one with 8 grams per serving (1/2 cup) and 4 grams of sugars. Ingredients are milk, cream, blah blah blah....agar and pectin. Is agar a type of sugar? Can I eat this a few times a week?

Oh and my serving size to keep the carbs to a max of 5g was about 1/3 of a cup.

Yes, agar is okay. It is used to thicken the yogurt (or to grow bacteria in the biology lab, but that's a different story... )

Since it is a new food, you can have the yogurt every other day.

Oh good. If it wasn't okay, I was going to have to start making my own! I love yogurt And yes, I will have it every other day to make sure it doesn't stall me....fingers are crossed!

Do they have Astro yogurts where you are? I sometimes buy the Balkan version of the Astro yogurt it has 6.25 fat percentage. That is what I look for in a good yogurt - as high a fat percentage as possible.
There is also a brand called Liberte I think that has a good Greek yogurt.

Yes, the one I bought is Astro Bio Best. I just looked and there is only 1 gram of fat. I was looking for the lowest carb one I could find.

          I've seen Liberte as well.

The one I use from Astro is called Astro Original Balkan Style. Really great yogurt. (White and red container)
When you check for the carb content pay attention to the serving sizes - they wary quite a bit.

Laurie -- do they sell Dannon yogurt where you live? I bought Dannon Diabetic yogurt today (it comes in a 4-pack) and has 3 carbs per serving - it's not perfect but once in awhile it tastes good. It is somewhat thinner than regular yogurt but the taste is the same.

                  Sweetened with splenda?
Does it contain corn starch, malt?

I can't find a good greek yogurt anywhere! One of the local stores carried a great brand with limited carbs, then they stopped carrying it! Grr... still searching...

Re: I found a yogurt I can eat! I think?

I just bought the Dannon low-carb yogurt tonight... in searching for the ingredients I found this:

Ingredients: Water, ultra-filtered skim milk, cream, contains less than 1 percent of whey protein concentrate, modified corn starch, natural and artificial flavors, kosher gelatin, sucralose (Splenda), potassium sorbate, malic acid, annatto extract (for color), caramel color, sodium citrate.

They had 3 flavors, strawberry, blueberry and vanilla. I'm praying it's edible...

If you can find an ordinary unflavoured plain yogurt it would probably not have the corn starch (a rung 9 addition) which is in the Dannon, which might affect your losing progress.

I am skeptical about that too. Like in light mayo they have taken out the fat and replaced it with starches and chemicals. Yogurt should be such a clean product - all you need is a few very healthy bacteria and off you go. No need to eat all kinds of chemicals with it. Plain yogurt with a high fat content is not that carby. I eat it very regularly and I love it.

I said it wasn't perfect but occassionally I ate it when I was going through the rungs the first time....it was thin but reminded me more of ice cream and tasted good. I had coupons for it from my endocrinologist so I ate it. I bought 2 4-paks and ate half of them over a month's time.
