    to the starchy veggie rung.

I'm a potato/rice/pasta junkie. So when I began OWL, I decided that I'd skip this rung completely. However, I've done alot of soul searching and alot of thinking about this.

After my cantaloupe experience, I might not even be able to eat a bit of potato and I'd be missing some other really wonderful root and starchy veggies by completely skipping this rung.

So, I'm giving it a try. If it doesn't work for me, I'll drop the rung and wait until pre-maintenance.

Good luck, Megs! I hope you're able to eat your potatoes. Don't forget carrots can be added now too, and they are not likely to cause the same problems.

        Thanks.

When I was going over the foods on the "other veggie" rung, I kept thinking 'there's alot more than potatoes'. Hopefully, I'll be able to eat some of them (and it will expand my menu alot too.)

Megs I am with you here I have to move forward now I am kind of nervous but did fine with legumes although most have been in the form of tofu, miso and bean sprouts with soybeans.....not one change yet...I still am banging my head on the wall about nuts...when I crave sugar I tend to grab them and think each time will be different..and it is not...duh...now for starchy veggies....I think I will start with carrots...I want a potato!!! but the foods I WANT are usually the ones that trigger cravings ...I have never had the urge for a carrot...I like them but do not jones for them ....how are you doing..what have you tried so far and how has it affected you...fruits are fine I just eat tiny quantities....booze is iffy it does trigger cravings ..or lowers my resistance...I had one piece of a low carb torilla with curry and they are not very good so I can wait until grains to try them again....let me know how it goes....I am worried most about corn and potatoes....

Carrots don't seem to have a bad effect on me. The problem is I really don't like carrots, but at least now I can have them in small amounts and use them in cooking.

Next veggie I'll try out are baby corn. I saw a few cans of them in the supermarket yesterday.....

that should be a good veggie as baby corn is really a squash not corn. Dr Atkins complaint about the GI lists was the amount of carrots used for the test is what he called 5 actual servings of carots and noboy really eats that much.
If you haven't looked at the AGR, Atkins Glycemic Rankings, of the veggies in the AFL, Atkins For Life, book you should as many of the high GI veggies get lower Atkins rankings and might surprise you. I think the list for the veggies rung in the stickie Ellewth posted is the eat regularly list for the AFL AGR charts.

              Happy OWLing.

well we had a topic on it here with pics of the squash/corn bushes that the oriental veggie came from and the stuff said it was actually a sqash bush and needed yrs to mature and only produces a small amount of ears at a time. there is a miniature sweet corn too now that you can buy seeds for and harvest as imiture ears every 2-3 days but it is only 10 about yrs old in its history line.

Squash grows on a vine not a bush and baby corn is imature corn..... :nod

Baby corn comes from regular maize plants that are harvested early while the ears are very immature. In contrast regular maize, baby corn is typically eaten whole, cob and all.

I am going to try them as well good choice I had forgotten about these little babies ....yum I love them....

Okay, I had a few baby corn yesterday with my dinner---popped open the can, drained them and heated them up in some butter! :yummy

Interesting...the whole can is 1 serving at 3 net carbs. There was a time early in my Atkins that I would have greedily devoured this whole can---times have certainly changed!

Baby corns are wonderful. I love them in a stir fry or straight out of the can. I also like them pickled! :yummy
