So disappointed! Last few days I gone up 3.3 lbs!!!!

  • So disappointed! Last few days I gone up 3.3 lbs!!!!

    Hi ya'all:

    I started OWL rung 1, last week Monday and thought I was doing great when I lost 3 lbs that week. Well this week its been a mess. I extended OWL rung 1 this week as well.

    I thought I was being good and all - swimming laps 5 times a week, drinking water, weighing my cheese and eating approx 23 net carbs/day some times a little bit less but never more and here I am going the opposite direction.

    Please help - what should I do?

    Should I go back to 20 net carbs or should I go up to rung 2?

    Did I mess up by extending this week on rung 1?

    Also can we eat less carbs than the amount we are supposed to per rung or do we absolutely have to eat the amt of carbs on a rung?

    I have got to turn this baby around!

    So what happened - you're seeing the scale go up a bit?
    Are you taking measurements as well?
    Scale will move up and bit a lot. Especially for us girls. Hormones, salts, whatever it happens. It is nothing to have a fit about. The trend should be down down

    Here look at pagliaccia's wii measurements and you see what I mean

      Post your menu. Indicate the foods including the amounts. Also indicate clearly what OWL foods you added and the amounts/net carbs.

          My menu for yesterday/pretty standard : OWL rung 1:

          1 mug of tea with 2 tbs heavy cream
          2 eggs baked with butter, 1 tbs cream & 1 tbs cheese

          Snack: 1 oz monterey Jack

          Lunch: 4 oz romaine lettuce
          1/2 tomato
          1/2 cup cucumber slices
          2 slices bacon
          2 tbs ranch dressing

          Snack: Tea/Coffee with 2 tbs cream + 1 oz cheddar cheese

          Dinner:
          Roast chicken
          1/2 cup green beans cooked with 2 oz pork sausage
          1/2 cup yellow squash cooked with onion & 1/2 slice bacon

          Total carbs: 26
          Fiber: 8
          Net carbs: 18

          Total Carbs from veggies: 19
          Fiber from veggies: 8
          Net carbs from veggies: 11

          Fat%= 66.24
          Protein%= 23.91
          Carbs%= 9.85

          45 mins swimming laps 5 days a week
          1 mutivitamin complete
          1/2 rounded tsp metamucil
          10 glasses water

                Is it TOM week or around? Did you do any change in your exercise routine? Both could cause water retention.

                  By the way, we only count net carbs during all phases of Atkins. That means if you eat 26 total carbs, but 10 of them were fiber, then your current carb level is 16, not 26. Fiber isn't digested, therefore, it has no impact on blood sugar.

                    Is fluctuation bad? eg: If I eat 18 carbs 1 day & 23 carbs the next?

                      Do you know how many net carbs on average you ate on induction?
                      If so then you add 5 net carbs of more veg on OWL1 then 5 net carbs of dairy on OWL2 and so on.

                      Say you averaged 12 net carbs on induction, your OWL1 goal would be 17 and OWL2 goal would be 22 etc.
                      Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                        I think what's happened is that you were counting total carbs as your daily carb amount. We don't do that on Atkins. We consider the net carbs as the daily carb amount. So for the menu you posted, your daily carb amount 18, not 26.

                        And I also think you are following Atkins.com's new way to count the vegetables: that is during Induction 12-15 of your carbs should be from vegetables. And that's where you're coming up with the 30 net carbs with 17 coming from vegetables. Stop it. Because you're only going to dig yourself into a bigger hole than you already are.

                        Rung 1 of OWL is simply adding 5 net carbs of any Induction vegetable to your typical Induction menu. From the menu you posted, I can't figure out what is your 5 net carb OWL Rung 1 food. Which is why I asked what it was.

                        By the way, if the tea/coffee is caffeinated ditch it. Also drop the amount of heavy cream you are using to 2-3 tablespoons daily.

                          You are right I have not added any particular veggie for my 5 net carbs - somedays it is cauli, brocc or lettuce & I have been making sure I have been eating 12-15 net carbs in veggies as per atkins.com

                          So please set me right:

                          Q) How many net carbs MUST I eat in veggies per day on OWl Rung 1?

                          I am confused. Are you saying I do not have to eat 12-15 net carbs in veggies (induction stage) + add 5 net carbs in veggies for OWL rung 1 = 17 net carbs in veggies per day?

                          I was eating 20 net carbs during induction of which I made sure that 12-15 net carbs were from veggies.

                          I would areally appreciate knowing how to fix this because as of this morning I have now put on 5 lbs since Monday i.e. 50% of the weight I had lost since starting Atkins a month ago & I am truly freaking out.

                            I'm going to start this with a little rant about the new Atkins.com way with vegetables. If you don't want to read it, scroll down.

                            The 12-15 net carb from veggies during Induction is a horrid idea. First of all, Dr. Atkins divided the vegetables into 2 lists for a reason: the "salad vegetables" are typically lower in carb than the "other list vegetables". This is important because generally the higher the carb, the higher the glycemic index, the greater you can screw up your blood sugar.

                            Secondly, 12-15 net carbs from vegetables teaches you NOTHING about proper serving sizes. 12 net carbs of lettuce is about 12 cups of lettuce----that amount of lettuce can feed you, me, and 4 other people for a single meal. Eating huge portions is what got some of us fat because we don't know what a proper serving is. Telling a person to eat 12-15 net carbs of any of these 50 vegetables only promotes and encourages bad eating habits.

                            Thirdly, with the Atkins.com rule, it's possible for someone to eat 12-15 net carbs of tomatoes only for Induction or 12-15 net carbs of cucumbers only for Induction. It doesn't take into account the glycemic index or how these 12-15 net carbs of vegetables can affect one's blood sugar. What we have found during OWL is that some folks can't eat 5 net carbs of a particular vegetable because it destabilizes their blood sugar and the slow or stall. Yet, Atkins.com doesn't care to acknowledge this.

                            In other words, Atkins.com's Induction vegetable recommendation is really crappy advise.

                            What was your Induction menu like?

                            Whatever you ate during your Induction, you add 5 net carbs of any OWL Rung 1 food to it.

                            So if you ate 15 net carbs (this carb value includes both your vegetable and non-vegetable carbs), then all you do is add 5 net carbs of the OWL Rung 1 to it.

                            I was eating 20 net carbs during induction of which I made sure that 12-15 net carbs were from veggies.
                            Then all you do is add 5 net carbs of any Induction vegetable to that.

                            You'll need to eat about 3500 calories above your normal caloric intake in order to gain 1 pound of fat. So unless you've been eating an additional 3500 per day, I doubt what you have gained is fat. It's probably water retention.

                            What are your measurements doing?

                              It is also confusing...big time. Thank you so much for the eloquent explanation of why I just didn't understand.

                              /rant on Actually, I found their instructions for Atkins to be super confusing and I got the impression that they were really more interested in selling bars/shakes rather than promoting a healthy WOE. After all, failure is big business and $$ for them...the more people fail in their weight loss attempts, the more money they will make selling their products to the masses of people who will keep doing Atkins wrong and be indefinitely dieting. /rant off

                              I'm so glad that I found this site and DANDR and the correct way to do Atkins!!
