    Re: Another veggie intake question

With Atkins (that includes the mandatory exercise part) you can definitely gain muscle weight.

You can have your body fat percentage measured and use that as your goal.

      >>I think it's 62-63% for a whole, raw chicken egg.>>

According to the USDA, one large egg has 4.97 grams of fat. The whole egg is 50 grams.

Looking at Fitday, there's 5 grams of fat, which is 8%. Once you add the egg to your food log, the fat % is 63% of total calories.

What's so magical about being below 140?

Is that the scale ruling your life?

          Re: fat

Look in the 14 DAy Induction Forum or its FAQ section: there is a thread that is about how much fat you need to add.

Fat has alittle over twice the calories as carbs and proteins. So fat is more calorie dense. It takes very little fat (maybe a tablespoon or two) to change the fat content of your diet.

Some ways to incorporate that fat.....

Flavored butters: basically you mix softened butter with herbs and spices of your choice. Store it in the freezer or frig. Add a tablespoon of it to steamed veggies or top a piece of cooked meat with it (this is a secret used in many high end steakhouses---immediately after grilling the steak, they put a blob of flavored butter on top and let it melt over: it adds flavor, aroma and helps create a bit of a sauce for your steak and gives them another reason to charge you $25-50 for it.)

Flavored oils: they have them available in the supermarket. Or make your own flavored oils. Use them in salad dressings. Or use them like you would the flavored butters.

Here's a link to more detailed instructions and recipes for the butters and oils. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ters-oils.html

I like poached or soft boiled eggs for supper. Adding a sliver of the flavored butter or a few drops of the flavored oil to them gives them an extra flavor punch.

Same thing applies to, say, steamed broccoli. Steamed broccoli with butter is good, but steamed broccoli with a lemon-thyme-garlic butter is out of this world!

The scale finally moved an teeny weeny bit...it's now to 140.2! What a tease. Oh well, atleast my TOM is finally gone and I can get a better feel on how these RUNGS are affecting my weight loss. It's going to be a long fight with the scale.

            Best Wishes,

              congrats on your scale victory

to answer your protein question UConn did a study on folk not exercising and just eating Atkins vs a nonexercising high carb eating group.

they have a very special machine that can actually measure muscles and the atkins group gained muscles and lost body fat even thoough they were not working out.

Now you add the working out and you will add lean tissues.

I added several pounds of muscle from June of 03 to Dec of 03 eating OWl and doing the BFL lifting plan along with my HIIT treadmill walking.

and like you I was a very frustrated slow loser.

if you can find the posts by Cafflyfal you can see somebody who shed only 40 pounds total for over a yr but lost over 5 ft with a tape measure doing the 6WEC challenge measurements of neck, chest bust waist hips thighs calves wrist and biceps ro each limb.

That is a lot of muscle added to counter the body fat being shed.

Atkinsgal- yes I have definetly thought that my body is fighting me. If it is then I will have to starve myself and work out non stop to get below 140. It's not fun but I have lived that way before.
There is no reason for me to have as much cellulite as I have and my purpose for this way of life is to rid some of it and keep from becoming diabetic. The rest of my body is thin. I've transformed it before low carbing so there is no reason why it can't work this time. I am not willing to give up yet though.

Where to get more calories now??? Gonna have to be thru fatty dressings and oils....

Thanks for the menu it was great to review.

Hopefully this is my final question, for now, is it possible to build muscle mass eating more protein? I know that is dumb because I am pretty sure you can but did anyone else see more muscle on them after doing this wol for a while?

Thanks, 2 big, I want to look up that study. And WOW, 5 feet lost, that seems impossible!

Maybe I can break 140 in the next week?? Probably not, it took 12 days to lose .2 lbs.

                    Re: Another veggie intake question

Hey Jaxmama....during my OWL, I went through a period where I didn't really lose weight: up a pound one week, down a pound the next, up 2 pounds the next week, down 1 pound the next week, etc. However, during that time, I lost several clothing sizes! And eventhough I was "stuck" at 190-195, my size was smaller than when I was 190-195 and gaining weight.

From that point on, I looked at my losses this way: Unless I walk around carrying a sign that says "Hi. Today I weigh ____ pounds" no one will know how much I weigh. But everyone can see that I look smaller and I fit into my clothes better.

Also, Dr. Atkins wrote that the loss of inches was a better indicator of the loss of fat than scale weight, because the loss of inches represented fat emptying from our cells.

JaxMama, I totally understand what you are going through. I'm still trying to figure this whole thing as well. Sometimes, I think I'm not getting enough veggies in or fat. I started out cooking with Pam as well but started using a little oil or butter.
I know there are times in between meals I feel hungry and have noticed that if I eat a stick of cheese with some meat or something like that, it really helps.

I've started this WOE Jan 11 and have lost only 8 lbs but I know that I have lost more inches. The scale has been stuck at the same number. One day it may go up 1 lbs and next day go back down and it's really getting me frustrated. But I'm going to try and add in a few more things to see how it goes. All I know is Hubby can definately tell that I am loosing weight. The funny thing is Tom is here and I'm still at the same weight so I'm hoping after TOM is over, I will be lower. I usually gain weight around TOM.

Good luck to both of us!

I am not happy with the weight that I'm at. Would like to loose a few more pounds. I'm a little scared to move on. Hubby just came home with 2 small coconuts for me. I love coconuts. I grew up in the South Pacific and lived on them growing up. Hubby doesn't like them so don't know what to do with them. I don't think I'm allowed to have them yet.

Well, they're not allowed on Induction, that's for sure.

However, since you should be on pre-maintenance, and should have done the rungs of OWL, you could be having them.

The goal of Atkins isn't to remain on Induction for the rest of your life. You're doing yourself a great disservice by not doing OWL and moving towards maintenance.

I've only checked my thighs since that is my biggest part. I checked the first time, said it was more than when I started. Ha, ha, I knew that was not correct. So I did correct measurements and checked 10 days later and it showed a .25 inch decrease in each thigh. I figured that was good. I have not checked in a week. It's too soon.
I think I will take the time this weekend and do all my measurements. I can tell my belly has less fat. Too bad I can't get rid of the stretch marks that came along with my daughter.

Mfit...I just went thru 12 days of TOM ****! Drink lots of water. You have a great husband that notices weight loss. Mine won't acknowledge mine unless I was anorexic, so no positive enforcement in my home. But I am not doing this for him, just me. I was just in Tampa two weeks ago at the Hard Rock. Very cool you are in FL too!

Best Wishes and my advice (which I don't take) don't weigh yourself during TOM. My weight fluct was up to 7 lbs!

One thing I did was separate out all my clothes that are too small for me. I actually put them in a different part of the house. Then, every two weeks or so, I try them all on. It's so great to find out you fit in something that you never were able to before, and you can then move that piece of clothing into your normal rotation!
