  • Derailed - How Do I Recover?

Well first let me say that since December, I have not eaten off plan once until yesterday. Eating off plan yesterday was not planned and it was pretty much unavoidable.

My other half's oldest daughter was admitted to the hospital late Friday night. We spent most of the day yesterday there with her in waiting rooms and then her room once she was stable. Most importantly she is now stable and hopefully will be going home tomorrow.

When things calmed a bit yesterday it was around lunch time. I managed to find a pretty decent salad with arugula/rocket and other veggies. Oil and vinegar on it and a boiled egg for a bit of protein. From there everything was downhill. There wasn't a single food available around dinner time that was safe. Even the burgers had issues (I'd bet anything they were the ones with the fillers). So I went with a meat on a stick type of dish but after one bite I knew it was not a good choice.

I'm all for preparing ahead of time but this really was one of those extreme life situations. My question though - what's the best approach to recovering? I'm chugging the water already (started that with the meal) and of course will eat on plan as of right now. Should I stay where I am in OWL or do a day of pure induction foods? - Oh wait, had Greek yogurt with blueberries already this morning - scratch that. Anyway - need some expert advice here. Not concerned about the progress slowing down which I know it probably will, just looking for a back on track strategy.

    Thanks in advance!

Personally, I wouldn't go back to Induction. I would just make sure my next meal is appropriate for my phase of Atkins. Dr. Atkins warned us about "abusing Induction" in the book. So eat your OWL foods.

And I wish your SO's daughter a speedy recovery.

      I'm with Megs on this!

Just climb back on the horse where you fell off. There's no sense in crawling back to induction. You don't want to abuse it and you don't need to view it as a cure all or a punishment either.

You will get back into ketosis and...lesson learned.

Last year, I was getting called to the E.R. at all times of the day and night for family members. It didn't take too many times before I started planning ahead for that. I kept easy to transport items handy. I have little containers I keep 1 ounce servings of almonds in. There are some in the car, some in the kitchen. If I had to run, I grabbed and went. A serving of almonds holds me over for a few hours. Depending of whether you're home or not when there's an emergency, keeping dressing in a small to go container and cut up veggies is a good idea too. Preparing in advance is certainly not my favorite thing to do, but it has saved me on more than one occasion! Good luck to you! Hope everyone is healthy soon!

I agree with Meg~continue on with the phase you are at. Drink extra H20 to help flush out the crapola. Speedy recovery to your other half's daughter.

Thanks everyone this is good to hear. BF is there now, said she had a good night. I'll head over later but will make sure it is after I've eaten here. Again, thanks.

I am so sorry to hear bout your family's troubles and wish your OH's daughter a speedy recovery

I agree with Megs, just eat your normal OWL rung foods, but watch out for any cravings from whatever was in that meat

I have had a lot of unexpected hospital visits over the last couple of years so always keep a stash of one ounce containers of unsalted unroasted almonds at home as well as in the car and each handbag so I can grab a couple of them to have available if I cannot find anything 'legal' to eat.

We are very lucky in that our main hospital has a large 24 hour supermarket about a five minute walk away, and so I get take a bit of fresh air and buy some suitable food if I can get a half hour away during the days I am there a long time.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
