  • Ugh! I'm hungry...

I don't really know what my problem is lately, but I'm finding that I'm usually hungry often. I don't want to eat more than 73g of protein daily because I've found that protein is a major staller for me and even causes weight gain even though I'm working out about an hour and a half every morning. I'm still on the veggie rung although I don't always get that extra cup in. Heres what I usually have:

Breakfast - EAS Carb Control Strawberry Shake(since I found a flavor that I can somewhat tolerate for the time being). It has 2g of carbs and 17g of protein. I drink this right after my workout while I'm cooking breakfast for the kids. Sometimes I can't even make myself drink all of this and I finish it throughout the day.

Lunch - Four medium sized eggs scrambled using non-stick canola cooking spray.

Snack - 2oz of cream cheese, 1 packet of splenda, a dash of vanilla (about 3g of carbs here)

Dinner - Chicken Salad - two cups of lettuce, half of a cucumber sliced up, four chicken tenders chopped up and stir-fried in 1tbs of butter and 1tbs of canola oil mixed with cajun spice, garlic powder, basil, and pepper. I pour the remainder of the butter/oil mixture over the entire salad and chicken, then I top it with about 1/2 cup of mexican shredded cheese. I eat this around 3pm. It usually fills me up and I'm fine till bedtime, except for the occasional night-time munchies.

I drink a little over half a gallon of water every day. Also, I know the EAS shakes aren't exactly approved by DANDR, but they work for me right now.

    Any advice?

I think you identified the problem yourself... you're not getting in enough veggies. You've having very few carbs until dinner. You need more -- and I suspect you'll lose more quickly with them, too. And you're having dinner at 3 p.m. without at least a snack later in the evening? No wonder you are hungry, girl.... you need to eat!

      Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to add an extra cup of veggies as a snack. After some thought today, I'm trying to up my fat intake too. I added extra oil and butter to my salad and tomorrow I'm going to fry my eggs. Hopefully the fat will help decrease my hunger. I used to be able to eat this stuff and not be hungry, but now it doesn't work so well. Maybe its because I changed my workout program? I really do stink when it comes to putting a menu together...Thanks for replying Adena!

Just a thought - the shake has a lot of protein with very little fat, which might be throwing out your ratios of fat/protein/carb quite a bit!

Can you add some fat to that 'breakfast' to even things out?

Also the ingredients list does state
        Contains milk and soy ingredients.
so would not be OWL friendly till the legumes rung.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Hrm..what if I had my cream cheese with my shake? I know the shake isn't legal for me yet, but its an easy fix to the busy mornings. I don't want to add any more protein to my menu and that leaves me in a very narrow place. Maybe I need to cut the shake out and come up with something else.

There are some fantastic breakfast recipes here at Lindas site. This is my favorite which I make & then put in individual packages for myself & DD. We have breakfast for the week. Give it a try!

              Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

Thanks OzLover! Does one of those fill you up in the mornings? Have you tried freezing them and if so, were they good when thawed? Just wondering. I suppose I would have enough leftover to feed the kids too for a couple of days. That just might work! I still have seven strawberry shakes left. I need to get those out of the way before I replace them. Thanks again!

                Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

I know you don't want to hear this, but some people secrete insulin from consuming even fake sugar...and this makes them hungry.

I'm trying to sort this one out myself and limiting splenda to every other day to see if that helps with the hunger.

                  Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

BeanPole, you can make your own shake with silken tofu, heavy cream, and flavorings. As you move up the rungs you can add peanut butter (rung 3), berries (rung 4), and all sorts of other things! These shakes are more filling than pre-packaged ones (in my opinion) and they're cheaper and much healthier for you, because you're using natural ingredients.

I also noticed that you're only drinking 1/2 gallon of water per day. I know that you're doing intense exercise. You might be a little dehydrated--sometimes thirst masquerades as hunger. Try drinking a little more water to replace the moisture you're losing from exercise.

more exercise and more water and less carbs are always the three keys to break a plateau.

The breakfast quiche does freeze well. I have one in the morning & try to have a protein snack in the mid morning if my work schedule allows it. I'm a nurse & work in the operating room.

                        Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

Julirama - Do you know if Krogers carries the silken tofu? I was looking for it last week, but I didn't have much time to shop and I didn't know where to look. Also, how much more water would you suggest?? As always, thanks for the help!

Oz - Good to hear! I'm thinking about replacing my fried eggs with the sausage quiche. I think I need something with more flavor than plain eggs and that way I can work the silken tofu in. I could even switch them some days.

Jimmy - I don't think I can decrease carbs anymore. I'm still consuming around 20-25 daily. As soon as I get the scales moving again, I'll be moving up the rungs.

Astro - I had been thinking about that lately actually. I don't need as much sweetner as I used to and I think I could probably go without my packet of splenda daily. How is it working for you?

I think I need a complete menu makeover! I need start loosing again. I've been in this place long enough and it seems that I've gained a pound. That has been very depressing for me. I feel like such a failure sometimes, like I can't make the plan work for me and I know thats not true. Theres plenty of success stories here and I know it can work for me too. I'm doing this awesome workout program and I need my eating habits in line to get maximum results. I'm going to try taking everyone's advice except for lowering my carbs. I need to go crunch numbers and come up with something more effective towards my weightloss. Thanks for the help! If anyone has anymore advice, feel free to post! I want to get this right...

                            Re: Ugh! I'm hungry...

Well, I had two diet rites yesterday. Various reasons, but basically, I was weak. I had a million things to do and our ice maker wasn't making ice...they were nice and cold. I thought if I had them with meals or immediately before that that would mitigate any issues with insulin being released.

I ate more calories (all on plan though) than I have for at least two weeks. I think that's probably a bad sign for diet sodas in my future.

I did get a crazy amount of exercise yesterday. I did my normal walk (4mi at 4mph), but the sidewalks were snowy and icy, so there was a lot more burden on my legs to keep my stability (they are sore today as are my stomach muscles and this is a rarity). I also had to shovel snow before I went for a walk. I did all my cooking ahead for the week as well as all the laundry. Since we don't have a dryer, hanging up all that stuff to dry on a clothesline provides a bit of upper body.

I certainly don't mind all the exercise -- I like it, but I do notice that it makes me hungrier. Not usually this much hungrier, I think, but I don't know.

beanpole : I have been getting this feeling too. I wonder if it has something to do with coming out of PISS because I was fine until I started losing again. So far in the last cpl of days I have lost 2 pounds and AFTER I killed an entire Atkins legal pumpkin pie that I made. I have been so freaking hungry but not because I am hungry because I just want food and it doesn't matter the portions or kind. Your not alone.
