    Hi folks

I am doing Atkins again. I had to stop because I was suffering from post natal depression and when I stopped taking the pills for that, I turned to chocolate.

I have not put on loads of weight but I got to the point where even my fat clothes didn't fit anymore. I knew I needed to diet again and so I turned to my favourite - Atkins. I am not loosing as much as I thought I would and wondered if you guys might mind having a look at what I'm eating please?

I am 5ft5 tall and weighed 11stone11oz when I started induction 3 weeks ago. I am now 11stone7oz but yesterday I was only 11stone 6! I am still in the induction phase.

    On a usual day:-
    Breakfast
Mug of mint tea, 0.3g carb per 100ml I must be having approx 150ml
3 scrambled eggs + 3 rashers of bacon (I but this from the shop so I don't know anything about the bacon but I don't think it's sugar cured)
2 tablets psyllium husks, 1 multivitamin with cod liver oil, 2 tablets with Magnesium, Calcium and Potasium

    Snack
Cheese (I know I am supposed to only have 3-4oz - that's not a lot really is it <sad>)
Some days I might have some pork crackling but I have discovered that some brands have carb content! I also alsked my Mum to bring me some beef jerky home from her visit to the states but even that had added sugar!

    Lunch
50g salad leaves, including spinach, red chard, rocket
1 tbsp Salad Dressing - Pizza Express dressing which contains 4g carbs per 100ml
Mattessons sausage (which has no carbs and they taste great!)

    Tea
Chicken with paprika, lemon and garlic (homemade, paprika has no added sugar and I only use 1 clove of garlic)
Green beans with a knob of butter

Sometimes I might have another cup of mint tea later.

One meal we have is chicken with 5 spice (no added sugar) and soy sauce but I don't know whether soy sauce is allowed on induction?

I also drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

I know that I am probably not eating enough veggies but I find it really difficult to eat them. I was never one for eating them before I found Atkins and I am doing so well getting the amount that I do into my diet. Since I don't eat a huge amount of fats and protein (although in the correct ratio - I hope) I can eat less veggies as part of the total ratio of what I am putting into my body.

Vegetables are essential. They provide nutrients that sustain you through loss. So try to do a better job on those. It is eating vegetables that will help you hold on to the loss when you reach goal so keep working those in.
If you eat less food to get correct rations you will likely not lose. Atkins is an eat diet. We need to nourish the body as we persuade it to go into ketosis and burn fat. If you undereat you will not do that.

Breakfast looks good but It is almost 100% likely that the bacon has sugar. Can you ask what it is cured with?

Cheese is OK as snack but I would like it better if you had veggies or meat or egg sometimes as well. Cheese has carb and some people find weightloss slows down with it. Remember you are only allowed around 115 gr.

Does your sausage contain some illegal ingredients. Check the list of ingredients and do not rely on the label

Also make sure you drink plenty of water and get some exercise. Those things help. Your menu is pretty good. But if you are not eating enough that is not helping. I always eat lost of fat. It helps with everything.

Thanks liv, I really appreciate your reply.

Those vitanutrients in vegetables may be good for ya but not so tasty ;-). I don't reduce the amount I eat to avoid eating more veggies it's just that I have never eaten loads of food and Atkins has certainly reduced my appetite. I think the main reason I put on weight is I ate a lot of bread and unrefined carbs when not on Atkins. My husband has Ulcerative Colitis and he has to avoid fibre when he has a flare up. So we have lots of white bread, white pasta and cereal in the house. Keeping away from those is a struggle!

He is really supportive of me doing Atkins though and we manage to eat the same main meat dish most of the time but I have beans whereas he has rice/pasta. Or he cooks something on the hob for me while his lasagne and potato is cooking in the oven!

It's interesting you should mention the sugar on the bacon. I really should ask them. The bacon tastes really salty though so I assumed that it was cured with salt. I am in the UK and it is unusual to see bacon cured with sugar over here. It's usually packaged as "Sweetcure". They do put a knob of butter in with the scrambled egg so there's a bit more fat to add to the menu. I will ask them about the bacon though, just to make sure.

I was really pleasantly supprised to read the ingredients on the sausage, it is a frankferter style sausage which i think generally are better then other sausage. Pork 95%, water, seasoning (salt, citric acid, stabiliser (Sodium Polyphosphates) flavourings, preservatives (sodium nitrate). I remember reading in the book that sodium nitrate should be avoided but with so little choice in the UK I gotta let something go.

I was not sure about the salad dressing I am using. Is 4g carbs per 100ml OK if I am only having 1 tbsp?

I wonder when there are going to be low-carb products available over here. I cannot find any soda sweetened with Splenda, only Asmartamine K so I have mainly avoided drinking Coke Zero (although one stalled me when I tried it). My Mum did bring me back some soda from the states. I forget which one but it was one I saw suggested on this site somewhere. The only thing to do is to buy from on the internet.

Sounds like you are thinking about it.
Here is the good news: tastebuds change so keep trying. Also find some different recipes and ways to try new and old veggies and see what you can do. I recommend trying to puree veggies into a cream soup. That is a great way to eat veggies.

The sausage is sounding good. Is it a sausage sold all over Britain. We often have people come and ask what they can buy and none of us can point to a good British sausage. So maybe post in the induction forum and share the good news.

Hard to find salad dressing with no carb. I think that looked just as good as the ones we recommend. Do I would not worry about it

Low carb products are the pitts. Atkins is about whole foods so as soon as you learn to deal with those the better. Make sure you drink plenty of clean water. You can try some selzer with a bit of lemon or lime in it now and then.

Keep working it. Looks like you are off to a good start

          >>oy sauce but I don't know whether soy sauce is allowed on induction?>>

Yes, though you have to keep in mind that it most likely has wheat in it and lots of sodium.

I end up using tamari, which can be gotten wheat free. And you should be able to a get lower sodium version of tamari or soy sauce.

Thanks. I'm thinking about grating some eggplant into my scrambled eggs with cheese when I make my own at the weekend. Also if my LO lets me do it at home I'll try to make it every day through the week instead of going to the shop.

The other thing I was thinking about is making my own meat balls with gound beef and some veggies hidden in there. I could get in some onions, some peppers and maybe some eggplant. I haven't used eggplant myself before but previously enjoyed it in a moussaka. Is it recommended to cook it first to soften it? I have heard it can be bitter if not cooked with salt, is that right?

Hey, I'm doing something right - I did discover that lower sodium soy sauce has less carbs because I have been doing like the book says and reading the labels!

I'll keep it to a minimum but I found some good recepies with soy sauce in. Soy, red chillies, grated ginger and garlic and oven cool until chicken is tender, mmmmmmm! I have even discovered lazy garlic and lazy ginger for those tired-cannot-be-bothered-to-cook days!

Any tips on easy cooking with Tamari, I have not used that? (Sorry this isn't really the right section for this sort of question)
