Okay...I was talking to my mom today and she was telling me about an article she read I think..in Woman's World, I could be lieing...Anyway, I'll find out for sure what magazine it was. The article talks about how a woman lost over 100 lbs. by setting mini goals. Now I do not know what type of diet she was following, but basically... say she weighed 235 lbs., she would set a mini goal of 230 lbs. and once she lost that, she would set another goal of 5 lbs..and so on and so on. Supposidly, she lost the weight quickly and says it all has to do with setting mini goals.

The lady says that when you set yourself up to lose 100 lbs. as a goal, it seems far fetched, but doing it 5 lbs. at a time, seemed effortless, that anyone can lose 5 lbs. Now, I agree with this, setting mini goals seems like it would be easier to achieve than setting a goal of 100 lbs.

I am going to try it...just thought I would throw this out there, and maybe it will work for you too!

I guess I kind of do that mentally. I tell myself "I'll be passed whatever number by next week". Maybe I should write it down though....

When I was giong to Jenny Craig back in Canada, I used to set mini goals as well, of smaller amounts of weight. It sets us up to feel like we are achieving more often than just waiting for the big goal of let's say 100 pounds or so to arrive. I think its more of a psychological trick to let us know we are achieving, even if its small goals. I am doing that with myself at the moment. My mini goal is 250 lbs, then once I reach that I wlil probably aim for 230 or 240 and so on.

I think that indeed this works best, the feeling to have reached your goal is so great, it does the trick every time !
I never thought of writing it down though, so thanks for sharing Manna :nod

One thing that I really liked about Weight Watchers was that the first goal was always called the 10% goal, which is that you first shoot for losing 10% of your overall weight as your first goal. For me, starting out, that was 32 pounds. After that, I shot for 25 pound increments.

I agree that small goals are the way to go. Looking in the mirror and saying, "I have got to lose 100 pounds" is daunting. Celebrating each 5 pounds gone is marvellous. After all, those 17,000+ calories it took to burn those 5 pounds didn't just go on holiday. You kicked them to the curb!

Cleo, that is what I was going to say, ya beat me to it! I like that 10% rule. Some say that after you lose each 10%, you should try to maintain that loss, then try for the next 10% for lifetime success. However, I think many of us are way to eager to lose the fat!

What I do with mini-goals is to concentrate on 10 lbs at a time. That is reasonable for someone like me.

I set small goals for myself. Usually it's a clothes size. I am a sixteen right now, and my next goal is to be a 14. Actually my next goal is to be 199 which I hope to achieve sometime in the next few weeks, after that my goal will be size 14.
