Lame! Does anybody here watch Coronation Street (British soap)? There's a female character named Frankie that does low carb. But the funny thing is in one scene she didn't want to eat a salad because it had carbs yet she was in the pub drinking.

"Perhaps the writers need to read the book. LOL!!"
No kidding! But the sad thing is it's realistic considering the number of people that I've talked to that think they're doing atkins. But that article did make me wonder why there are no long term studies (or are there?). I think it can only help.
On its website, it advises dieters to cut down on refined carbohydrates such as high-sugar foods, breads, pasta, cereal and starchy vegetables.
But the ASA found that "... the plan conflicted with UK Government advice on achieving a balanced diet, which among other things stated that starchy foods should make up about one-third of people's diets."
This one made me laugh. The Uk government says so, so it has to be true!! lmao.
It ruled that any future Atkins advertising should be on an "availability-only" basis until the advertiser could prove its health claims were true.
Atkins has many many scientific studies backing it up. The point I see is that the Uk and the US food watchers and diet makers are getting egg in their face (pun inteneded) from being proved wrong and the only way to save face is to go about it this way.

I have noticed that this certainly is a support group. That is great. However, you can still support others and keep an open mind.
The part of the article that caught my attention was
"But the ASA found the studies were either carried out over short periods of time or were limited in their scope. Several called for longer assessments to be carried out."
This is important. In order for the world to take Atkins seriously and give it respect, you have to understand that these are legitimate issues for most critics.
Saying that Atkins worked for us doesn't help as much as convincing people that it will help them. Long term studies are accepted by more people than one friend's personal experience. Why? Well, we all know that genetic freak who can eat whatever they want and not gain weight.
Don't worry, if Atkins is tested over long time studies and still produces results, then the popular media will take a different look.
There are 2 mindsets: 1) Who cares what others think, this is working for me; and 2) It would be great of others expereince what I know to work - how can that happen?
Don't consider all criticism as bashing. I thought that the article was fairly objective.
-- Don't forget that I did Atkins and have lost 16 pounds in 3 weeks, so I know that it works. However, the long-term effects are legitimate concerns - especially if you do "extended induction" as many do.

That statement is a concern with me since I had a heart attack and I am a diabetic and I plan to do the extended Induction phase of this program to drop weight as quickly and safely as I can...
I just believe I am on a time table to something serioulsy going wrong with me and want to be healthy...
I plan to stay in close touch with my doctor and have the tests done that are needed especially for my kidneys and liver...
I sure do love this program and plan to stay with it for the long term. Johnny :guns

It doesn't matter to me if the world takes Atkins seriously or not, or whether the world gives it respect. Nor is it my concern or responsibility to convince other folk that Atkins will help them.
No one has to prove a daggone thing to anyone else.
Keep doing what you're doing & you'll keep getting what you're getting!!!

Its ill informed statements like this that cause newbies to start to worry. There are tons of studies done on induction studies. What makes me laugh the hardest is that you have legitimate concerns...based on what though?
What causes you the greatest worry? To many vegetables? not enough refined flower or carbs?

I worry because of the fact I am a diabetic and worry about my kidneys and heart but having it checked by my doctor so hopefully everything will be fine...
Yeah I have something to worry about when it comes to my living or dieing!!
I do love the program but do have concerns and for some of us it is serious!
Johnny, I am not saying your concerns are not important, definatly not. What I am saying is the you have no reasons to have concerns. IF you had your blood work done before hand, you would have got a good idea of what your Kidney and liver values were.
A well functioning set of kidneys have nothing to worry about. Dr. Atkins only said no to people with already debunk kidneys. Anyone with a creatinine of more than 2.8 should not being doing any weight loss stage of Atkins, or any other plan without first consulting a doctor about food choices.
Now, For a diabetic, this is the best plan available. Controlling blood sugar is one of the most important thing on a diabetics mind. If you have been taking your readings in the last 2 weeks you should know that everything is stable.
Your pancreas is getting a rest, your blood is healthier and flooding with vitanutrients instead of bad glucose from the old way of eating.
Now for your heart, did you take a blood pressure reading lately? do so after your induction. Hypertension pretty much gets elliminated eating on this W.o.l.. So your heart is ok, your kidneys have nothing to worry about and your blood sugar is stable....what more could you ask for buddy?? :hug
