  • Just smelling chocolate chip cookies.....

This is a dumb question but I am going to ask anyway....

Does your insulin levels rise when your mouth waters
because you smell chocolate chip cookies baking?
    Can just smelling do it?

My hubbie and boys buy those big tubs of cho chip
cookie dough at Sam's and cook them all the time
and really munch down. My mouth waters at times but
I do not cheat and am not really tempted (thank goodness)!

Anyone else have to endure those tempting smells?

In a word, yes. 2big has a big, fancy schmancy name for the phenomenon- but I'll be darned if I can remember it. LOL All I can think of is a "Pavlovian Response", ROFLMAO - and that ain't it.

I have the opposite thing going. I get off on the smell of french fries and chocolate chip cookies in the oven. I have NO desire to eat them - NONE. I just sniff and sigh with delight!

I made cranberry/orange scones on Sunday for husband to take for breakfast this week. The smell of those didnt really bother me. Last night i made blueberry bread for him...now that made the house smell really good. It was a rainy day here in Texas and the smell of that baking in the oven had my mouth watering! I called him this morning to ask him how it was and he told me it was awesome! He took both loaves to work so it's outta my house THANK GOODNESS!! LOL!

Our Moderator Cleo talked about this before. I don't believe it has an effect on insulin levels, but it does help curve cravings.

The sense of smell is lot stronger than taste. So smelling the cookies is alot more satisfying than eating them. this can be proven(DO NOT DO THIS) after you eat them, you say to yourself, "hmm, that wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be".

actually if and only if you are the big fancy name is cephalic responder and Not2late has posted a stickie about it.
If you are a responder as Brook said like pavlov's dog your body reacts to the sight and smell of the sweets and even the flase sweet taste of some low carb sweeteners like Splenda by raising your insulin levels as it prepares to ingest them. Not getting a sweet then that insulin assists your body in using up the nornal blood sugar you have dropped your level and poof you got cravings for something sweet.

So you know if you are or aren't, Cleo isn't and she can just inhale and be happy, but if you are and inhale you will be happy but in a bit you will be craving sweets to get your Blood sugar back up.

              Happy low carbing

I can smell things without the cephalic response, and I smell things all the time, it's as good as a taste. I call it "aroma therapy". However, I noticed that the longer I am on this WOE the more the stuff smells overly sickeningly sweet. I think they smell to strong. Like a cookie or chocolate. I'll bet they would not taste good anymore either, since they don't smell as good as they use to.

I totally agree. I walked into a McDonalds the other day to fill up my water bottle (I was out running) and nearly GAGGED on the smell of those french fries I USED TO LOVE. It was absolutely nauseating and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Isn't that the truth!!!!! You know, I have always had to bite into pasta to check for doneness (al Dente, or to the tooth). Of course, I always spit it out in the trash now. My family loves pasta though, so I make it. I have noticed though, that pasta is now just plain gross. Tasteless and mushy. I cannot believe that I use to be a pasta-holic!!! Testing the doneness of the pasta is a gross job these days!

What a timely thread for me. I'm so worried about an upcoming "Baking Day" this Saturday that I have to attend for a civic group. We'll be baking cookies and cakes to sell at an upcoming Fair. The goods will be frozen after we "do the deed" until the Fair. But, I'm soooo scared. I can't imagine being around all those smells and all those goodies. I don't even have a sweet tooth normally, but I don't want to cheat. I'm also not looking forward to someone tempting me to have a bite or a taste and almost forcing it on me and then having to explain my WOL. Anyway, just venting. Wish me luck!!!

I find things taste overly sweet....I sometimes have bottled flavoured water (Splenda sweetened) and I have to water it down because it seems so sweet.

awwwww, I feel for you. Just remember "aroma therapy", you don't need to put it in your mouth to "taste it".

I imagine that at an event such as this everyone is going to be pigging out and they will probably feel guilty if they see someone refraining from indulging, which will cause them to force it on you more(human nature).

If you explain your WOE, I am afraid they may really attack you, in order to have you "join in" on the pig fest. You don't have to explain your WOE to everyone, I think I might be tempted to just say "I have a tummy ache", or "I am really stuffed from lunch", or, I don't feel like eating sweets, it's just not appealing to me right now".

Maybe I am being overprotective of you, but I had a very bad experience at a BBQ last weekend. I got attacked so bad about my WOE. They all thought atkins was all about mass amounts of meat, cheese and fat. Here is a quote "oh, I think it would be unhealthy to not eat any vegetables" as he stuffed an entire half piece of cake into his mouth, with one bite. I spent the whole afternoon defending and explaining this WOE, while they argued and half listened while polishing off a pile of deserts, and washing it all down with diet soda. I decided it was not worth it. People can be so ignorant. Just my humble 2 cents........
