  • Has anyone invested in a meat slicer?

I keep going back and forth about whether I'd like one. I think it'd be nice, but I don't know if it's worth the cost and the 'real estate' it would require in my kitchen.

Do you have a meat slicer, and if so, what are your opinions regarding them?

    Thank you!

Actually I have seriously thought about getting one. I love to make my own roast beef and when I buy roast beef sliced at the store it is not the same and tends to have more sodium than I want.

I agree! That and it's majorly processed, even at the deli counter!

I had a meat slicer many years ago, rarely used it as it took up too much space, and was too much of a deal to take it out and put it away. I use an electric knife to slice meats, chicken, etc. Much easier, and requires less room, and does the job just as well!

Re: Has anyone invested in a meat slicer?

When I was a kid, Daddy bought a meat slicer because it was cheaper if we just used the leftovers from Sunday night dinner (usually a roast beef or a ham) as our sandwich stuffing during the week. I'm sure they've improved on meat slicers since then, but the one we had was this big stainless steel thing (looked like a small table saw!) and the blade was adjustable so that you can adjust the thickness of the slices. After dinner, Daddy used to slice the leftover meat, pack it into containers and we used that instead of deli meats. On occasion, mom used to buy large hunks of bologna or pimento loaf from the deli and we used to slice it at home.

I suppose if you have a large family and/or a lot of leftovers or if you belong to a warehouse club where you can purchase a large loaf of bologna, a meat slicer would be a good investment.

My niece has one that her father gave her. She just shoved it into the closet and wondered what he was thinking!

Are you looking for a specific sized slicer? They have a small electric one at harborfreight.com for around $40... I've been thinking about getting one for ham and roast beef, so I'll know what's in it

Hmmm....maybe just a really good quality carving knife might be best for me.

I just transcribed a medical report of a woman injuring herself on her meat slicer. It was enough to make me not want one! LOL

I mean, granted, anyone can hurt themselves on anything, but this was pretty raunchfunky!

I reckon cleaning it would be a hassle, like using the food processor and having to wash and dry all the bits.

I just bought a hand-operated one which works like a cheese wire but has a serrated sort of saw blade you pull down across the meat.
It works well - but as you have children it might not be suitable if they tried to use it.
