  • Hypothetical Question on Extended Induction

You're probabaly wondering why this post isn't on the Extended Induction board. Hear me out and I'll explain.

When I was losing 5lbs/mo on extended induction, I jokingly said that if I kept losing weight at that constant rate then in three years I'd cease to exist (since my weight would have dropped to zero). Of course we all know that's impossible.

Hypothetically, let's say someone is properly doing induction for an indefinite period (please note this is NOT a recommendation to do so) and is eating enough to stay off starvation mode. Obviously, there'll be a point or lower bound where that person will stop losing weight. From what we know of the Atkins WOE, there's no way for someone properly doing Atkins to be anorexic.

So assuming there's a lower bound, or a point where one can't lose weight on Atkins anymore, is that lower bound a person's real ideal weight?

In my personal experience, I'd say "no".

While a teen, I was able to be literal skin and bones while on Atkins. I had to force myself to stop losing because people thought I was anorexic at 116 (too small for my 5'5" medium frame) and I stopped looking healthy and well. I had to gain weight to hit my healthy self again where I needed to be. So, to me, there is no lower weight limit on Atkins, especially if one is eating to remain in ketosis.

    Again, just my anecdotal evidence.

So I guess it is possible to be anorexic on Atkins.

I guess zero would be a lower limit then. If you could drop down to negative 10lbs you'd be lighter than air.

Again, just me, but I'd seriously say anorexia is a very real possibility while on Atkins. Granted, as a young child, my looks very much mattered (whereas my health does now), so when I was actually extruding bones through my skin, I knew that I was looking quite unattractive and immediately worked to gain 5 pounds. Still, because I was never hungry in deep ketosis, I didn't have any motive to eat. I say with all sincerity that Atkins can be used for the nefarious purposes of too much weight loss. Even today I have to literally struggle to eat more than 600 calories a day while following this plan.

LOL on 'lighter than air'... you always give me a grin or a chuckle!

Re: Hypothetical Question on Extended Induction

I would differ (at least in my case) there is/was a point in which my weight lost stopped even though my diet has not changed much since Extended Induction and still will test in ketosis when I do test. The way I explain it is that Calories finally count up with the Atkineer and begin to matter as the ready source of fat decreases more and more. Ketosis only says your consuming fat for fuel, and hence ketones are being generated as by-products. Certainly, you could eat (or not eat in this case) the Extended Induction way to your death, but I think the not eating yourself in starvation mode (which may or may not equal your BMR Caloric intake -- especially if you are exercising) would prevent that.

If someone chooses to go or unrealizes to eat only in starvation mode, they certainly aren't following the diet as prescribed. I always guaged my starvation mode by bodily performance, especially in exercise. If my body was being broken down by consuming itself or not recoving from exercise as well anymore, I knew I had to boost my Caloric intake.

I'm an experimenter by nature. I, too have often wondered how low I could go....and at what point low-carbing would cease to exist. Quite honestly I could stand to lose another 5-7 pounds if it came from my stomach area. However whenever I start dropping too many pounds my wife gets after me for looking too skinny. I also think being too thin is unattractive. SCP
