  • Hey all! Soy Sauce?

Thought I would say "hey!". This is my 3rd day Doin' it Atkin's Style. I did a form of it a few years ago with a good bit of success. I have had my first child and have packed on the pounds after he was born. I have ordered The Book but it will be a few days for it to arrive, so I don't have the correct food lists for induction other than the pocket list posted on the board.

I have a question about Induction and Soy Sauce. It says 1 carb per Table spoon but no sugar content listed. Is it legal on induction? I have search and looked and can't seem to find anything saying yes or no. I knew you folks here would know. I am really hoping it is okay in limited amounts.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd not use soy sauce on induction, because soy is not allowed until OWL.

Hey, Thanks... though that's a total bummer. I am not a sweets or starch nut, but give me a fridge full of condiments and I go crazy. I love some sauces.

As soon as The Book arrives I will get a better idea on EXACTLY what is legal and illegal.
Thanks for the help and the warm welcome. Everyone here is just amazing. The success stories and the stories of everyone's ups and downs has been inspiring and just what I needed.
Any idea what rung Soy Sauce is on?

This can get you started. Tammy made this and it is very helpful. Print it out and keep it in your wallet or on your fridge.

Soy sauce comes in the legume rung (rung 5) of OWL.

Soy beans would be on the legume rung. I may be wrong, but I disagree with Cleo on this one. Apples aren't allowed on induction but vinegar is and its made from apples. Soy sauce is sort of the same only made from soy beans..and how much do you actually use? The biggest problem I see with soy sauce is the sodium content which is very high, but I'm sure you'll have more answers from the experts about this--I don't know for sure.

              Re: Hey all! Soy Sauce?

you are going to have to read your label and know how your soy sauce is made if it is blended it is mixing together water, salt, hydrolyzed vegetable proteins, and colour. It takes perhaps three days, depending on the equipment.

The fermentation, or traditional method, starts with steamed soybeans, and ground roasted wheat. These are blended on large tables, to which a proprietary seed
culture, called koji, is added. With humidity, warm temperature and aeration, the koji grows over over a period of three days. Once enough growth has taken place, the mix is poured into tanks and mixed with brine. This mash, called moromi, is left to ferment for six months.

During fermentation the mix is kept warm and humid air is blown through it to increase the growth of microorganisms. It is at this time that the starch and proteins of the soybeans and wheat are broken down, fermented and turned into various sugars, amino acids, peptides, alcohol, organic acids and other natural compounds.

So you got a bottle with sugar in it. nope not for induction

See I knew an expert would show up LOL, don't ask her what time it is!

                j/k 2big

So 2big, to clarify what you're saying is, if it doesn't list sugar in the ingredients its o.k.? Because I don't think they list their exact process for production on the label.

                          Re: Hey all! Soy Sauce?

hey you type faster then me Cleo PMed me about the soy sauce since i'm allergic to soy i don't usually read soy posts unless somebody PMs me about it. I came and answered the topic after answering the post

Actually since it has wheat in it it should be rung 9

you need to find out how they made it MOG

the sugar added soy should have a higher sugar number in the nutritional label

sort of like Dr Atkins says you can not have basalmic vinegar but you can have other vinegars.

                            Re: Hey all! Soy Sauce?

Maybe 2big will elaborate, but I did ask her whether or not soy sauce was on rung 5 and received an answer which led me to believe that the ingredients do not change, even if there is processing. Soy is soy is soy, fermented or not.

Someone else might have a different idea, but I still would stand by rung 5 as being the safest bet for anyone wishing to use soy sauce.
