    Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

Here's something on the positive side. My relatives know I'm diabetic (or was---no meds for two months, thanks, Dr. A!!!). I tell them that sugar and starch to me is what alchohol is to the alchoholic - a little will kill me. There's no more discussion about what I eat. When they say "Oh, just a little won't hurt you, I say, would you say this about the spiked egg nog if I just got out of a de-tox center?" No more discussion! Of course, I say it nicely and we all laugh, but that tends to end it.

Here's something to encourage you. I'm on extended induction (5 months) - I just came off a vacation -6 days on the road - no cheating. It was hard, but do-able. Have to really watch restaurants - there's sugar and hidden carbs in everything. It sure is good to be home where I can control what's made and how it's cooked.

    Happy New Year, all!

Ignorant relatives? I have them too. But they know now to keep it to themselves, especially since I'm half the size I was. But I still have a group of relatives who still think I'm killing myself (though they never made a fuss when I was at my largest).

I heard this from a friend:

Most people can't bear to look at you when you're FAT and they can't bear to look at themselves when you're THIN.

        Amen.

          Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

I am so happy to have made it through the Christmas season still in deep ketosis (I was so shocked by this I tested three times) even though I was a little bit more liberal with what I allowed in my mouth. We have a very very small nuclear family so I don't exactly have anyone pushing me to eat their mashed potatoes. Christmas Eve I enjoyed a fabulous dinner out and did indulge in a few non Atkins friendly treats--I am only human, and lobster bisque and coconut shrimp are my favourite things ever ever ever!

Hope everyone had an excellent, white flour and processed sugar free non-denominational seasonal holiday.

            So true!

I'm sorry that your relatives were so hard on you. I hope they see your success and change their attitudes.

              Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

Ah, but sucess is a great silencer.

Some of the folk I know (and some members of my family) used to try the "Well just a little bit" or "just this once won't hurt" approach.

But they got nowhere - it just makes me more stubborn. I don't drink alcohol. I don't like it. I have never liked it and I never take it.

After Atkins I adopted the same approach as when pressed to alcohol.

              First offer: "No thank you."
Second offer: "No thank you in a very firm voice."
Third offer: I have refused twice - are you going to force me to return your rudeness?" (Or some simlar put down.)
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
              he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Atkins makes exercise mandatory - I took up cycling - see last pics at 203lb.

                Re: Damn you, ignorant relatives.

Wow, there has been some good responses here!
This is where the majority of the temptation is going to come from, 'relatives'! (IMHO)

The way I see it, it's not me that's being different, it's my relatives that are not changing! They all need to 'convert' to this Way of Eating!

For one - it's all about great food!
                Secondly - you never starve!
thirdly - you loose weight! (God knows everyone over 30 can use that!)
and Fourthly, it brings health benefits even if you have no weight to loose!

It doesn't matter what is served up to you and how (even if it's Grannies pie that you have fond childhood memories) - crap is crap! and carbs are crap!!

Good on you all that made it through the holidays!

My fiancee's relatives that I spent Xmas with respected my 'no potatoes' and 'no dessert' request - even though I also got the biscuits and chocolate pressents !

                  Me too, Dave!!
It is so ingrained into society that chocolates are an acceptable present that it is hard for non-Atkineers to get their head around the fact we are not going to eat them - even at christmas!!

My solution is always to open the box immediately and offer them around, then leave them on a table with all the other festive 'treats' while I go and refill my water glass!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
