  • Can anyone recommend a good fitness DVD?

All that seems to be out right now is an endless list of celebrities looking to make a couple extra thousand...

I want a good exercise dvd that will help me tone up. Up until now, my exercise regime has been just walking but I want something a lot more intense!

Anybody got any suggestions or recommendations?

I like Power90. Partially because I have a crush on the guy who does it (Tony Horton), sssh, that's confidential . There's an advanced disc and a beginner disc, the idea is you do it six days a week for 90 days (all I can say is "we'll see about that"). On each disc there's a sculpting (lifting with weights or with a band) and a cardio and an abs session. The sculpt and cardio are about half an hour long each, which is perfect for my busy schedule. I feel really worked out afterwards, and I don't dread doing them.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. Let me know if you want any more info.

I like The Firm series with the fanny lifter bench. I have the older version from 2 or 3 years ago. There are 3 tapes in the series, but I usually use the cardio sculpt tape because I can get it all in with one workout. It's about 55 minutes long. I can tell a big difference in my legs, butt and arms in just a few weeks and I work up a great sweat with it also. I usually do more ab work on my own though.

There is a newer version with a bigger bench out now too, but I really don't know much about the new one.

Anybody out there have any good suggestions on a tape or DVD for a workout ball? I got one for Christmas and the tape that came with it is pretty lame, imho. It is the core secrets DVD. TIA.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good fitness DVD?

I started doing The Pilates for Dummies when I first started exercising. I was way out of shape and had not done any kind of real daily exercising since high school (11 yrs ago)

It was great and low impact. I would break a sweat but wouldn't be wiped out afterward. Today I switched it up and did Winsor Pilates. It was faster paced and set for someone familiar with pilates. (made the other video seem like it was called Pilates for Wussies). I enjoy pilates because I am not all over the place and can get away with doing them without a bra on *hehehehe* and in my pajamas. It's mostly floor work.
            Anywho, that's my opinion.
PS Hubby walked by my PC and saw your picture and said "Wow, why is she doing Atkins?" *g* I said, "cause she is smart, like me"

Re: Can anyone recommend a good fitness DVD?

My vote is for Slim in 6. I've never been toned in my LIFE and even under my layer of flab, I saw results in the second week. The program is supposed to be used 6 days/week but I don't think I've ever been that dedicated, so I think I really started seeing a difference on my 5th or 6th workout. SI6 has a 25 min video for beginners and it is intense but very doable. Power 90 is more advanced and I tend to get embarrased jiggling my tubby body in front of the guy on the TV who's the instructor. He's so cute that I think it's almost blasphemous, so I'm sticking to Slim in 6 for now. Both are worth every penny spent on them. FYI - If you do order from beachbody.com, just purchase one thing the first time as they will send you 20% coupns via email just after your order.

Re: Can anyone recommend a good fitness DVD?

Steph, I wouldn't recommend something "a lot more intense" to start out with. It's easy to get really inspired and want to dive right on in to things, but it's even easier to burn yourself out, over train, and wind up throwing your hands in the air. Just be careful and approach the new exercise you choose slowly and smart. You're not supposed to be able to give the people in the videos a run for their money - matching them rep for rep, set for set- from the get-go. Be patient and persistant and you'll have butt cheeks that can crack walnuts in no time. LOL

Callanetics is awesome for all over body toning - but there's zero cardio involved. It's really an incredible workout, but you're going to have to set aside time for cardio too.

Power 90 is a great program, but I personally don't find it to be nearly enough lower body work. The cardio is fun and it's easy to follow- no choreography and definitely a sweat fest. The sculpting workouts are awesome for the upper body too.

Pilates is awesome for toning and sculpting too - I've found it to be great for improving posture as well - But again, no cardio.

I have the FIRM 1,2,3 and a ton of the supplemental videos they've put out. They're thorough, comprehensive workouts and they're tough!! I find them to be choreography intensive too, so if you're someone who struggles with that and gets frustrated by it - heads up.

I'd recommend checking out Yoga Booty Ballet or Slim In Six (which it sounds like you already did). Turbo Jam is also another really really great set.

Looking forward to hearing about your choice and how it's going!

Does anyone know where I can buy slim in 6 in the stores? Because if I buy it online then I'm going to have to pay Customs charges to get it shipped to the UK, otherwise I'll wait til I go back to the US in February and buy it in a store.

er, um, eek.... I've never seen it in stores but you might want to keep an eye on Ebay for a copy in your vicinity or someone who will ship to you. Another option would be to order it from beachbody.com and have it shipped to someone you know out here if you're visiting someone. If you don't know anyone, you could always have it shipped to a mailbox store (some are called UPS Store, FedEx or Kinkos) within the vicinity you'll be visiting and communicate with them via email to make sure how long they'll hold the package for you, etc. I've done this with some of my shipments and it only costs around $5 to pick it up.
