My name is Changing, and I am a spring mix addict.

I've always known that the darker greens were rife with nutritional goodness, but out of habit in the past, I bought iceberg and occasionally romaine lettuce to build my salads.

About 6 weeks ago, I purchased spring mix on a whim, and the husband and I are now hardcore users. I turn my nose up at iceberg, sidle right by the romaine, and scoop up our gigantic weekly container of spring mix (our favorite store's blend is endive, arugula, radicchio, spinach, and red chard). In fact, I almost growled one day when I went to the produce section and they were out. I drove across town to buy some at another store for a dollar more.

My dependency on dark green leaves has grown so extreme that the other night I was out with my husband and in-laws at a bar & grill restaurant eating a perfectly fine Cobb salad when I thought "man, why are they serving iceberg?" and "these toppings are nice, but where the heck is the flavor in this lettuce?"

My name is Changing, and I am a spring mix addict.

I am so there with the snobbery!

I used to scarf any old rubbish down prior to Atkins. Now I pay attention to the quality of all my foods.

Too many places have poor quality salads and they drown them in sauces to hide that fact.

I have found too that our supermarkets in Melbourne don't offer quality vegetables. I am inclined now to shop at Green Grocers or at the Markets.

And bloody ****, a salad is not soggy ice berg lettuce, a couple of cherry tomatoes and a salad onion! Use some imagination restaurants!

Amen!!! Actually, I used to get the spring mix and most of the time it is great, but sometimes - at certain times of year - one of the veggies in it gets REALLY bitter and I just don't like that. So, I pretty much stick with romaine and spinach. They mix well together and last me all week without getting soggy or grimy.

            Cute post!

To go one step beyone your current snobbery....grow your own spring mix. Freshly harvested daily in the early to late spring and then again in the very late fall/early winter...can't be beat! So easy to grow, too! The first cutting is always the best, but I will still eat the 2nd, 3rd, and maybe the 4th cuttings. 3rd & 4th cuttings are similar in taste to the greens at the supermarket. So, if you like it from the market, I challenge you to start a small plot or even a container of spring mix for this coming spring. You'll be glad you did!!

I'm totally with you. I've actually stopped buying salads at a lot of restaurants because they're so unappealing - even at GOOD restaurants. We should start an iceberg rebellion.

I too have discovered the spring mix variety, and we eat it daily, alternating occasionally with romaine salad for caesar salads. Iceberg lettuce is rarely used in my house anymore, so yah, consider me a salad snob as well!!

                        Re: Salad Snob

I love spring mix, Sam's Club here sells a very large bag of it for just a little more $ then I pay for a small bag at the local grocery store, problem is I am the only salad snob in the house. DH calls it weeds and weird stuff, best I can do is romaine maybe a little spinach mixed with his iceberg. So for me I can't use up the big bag fast enough but if you have a least a 2 salad snob household that would really be very economical. I am trying hard to convert my DH...

Oh yes, we partake of the Sam's economy "weeds" a great majority of the time... it seems to last about 8 days!!! 8 days!! Our iceberg/cabbage blend bags only lasted 3 days most of the time. I discovered the Sam's 1 lb package when my backup grocery store was out as well as my first choice. $4 for a POUND of spring mix. And the tub it comes in makes lovely tupperware when rinsed.

With two salad-junkie Atkinseer eating it, we just barely finish it within its 8 days of freshness. I just love it... it looks like a salad at a luxury hotel.

You won't believe how EASY it is and how DELICIOUS it is!!! Just use a pair of scissors to harvest your greens & they'll start growing again. Can do the same thing with spinach! They like the ground to be nice & cool, so summer time is out!

You know, I think this thread has helped me decide to be a salad snob! I think that's part of my problem with veggies and getting them all in. I can't stand iceburg lettuce much anymore, and even fresh spinach has gotten old, I can't handle eating that anymore almost. I've not tried the spring mix, but I love greens, I think this might get me into salads again! Canned veggies are horrid, but that's how I've been getting most of my veggies in, what little I eat, and you don't get much for the carbs in any of them.

I have to go shopping tomorrow (payday finally) and I'm going to be scouring this dreadful town for that spring mix!
