    Re: Atkins Bashing! [RANT]

GRRRR I really hate Atkins bashing too... the worst part is that you can never tell who will be the worst basher either.

One of my really good friends is very social and always meeting new people; consequently, he is always introducing me to new people. Well, I'll go out to eat with my husband, my friend, and new people/ a new person, and I'll order my dinner with all my substitutions/strange questions, and the new person/people will usually say one of two things once the server leaves:

    1) "You're not on ATKINS, are you?" (with rolled eyes, condescendion, pity, maybe even anger in their voice)

    2) "You're on Atkins, aren't you?" (smiling a little, either positively or neutrally, in a conversational way)

About 80% of the time, it's the first scenario. I've seen some otherwise very nice people become infuriated by a personal choice that I make for MYSELF, that doesn't affect them in the SLIGHTEST.

I even had an awful experience at Chili's with a WAITRESS of all people... one night, my husband and I ordered hot wings for an appetizer, and a couple of steak plates with broccoli and sauteed mushrooms substituted for the carby junk that usually comes with it. She said, "You guys are still on Atkins? Geeeez... Everyone quit that diet because it was so unhealthy but whatever." SHE ACTUALLY SAID THAT. I'm not good at confrontation so I just sat there tearing up, but my husband said, "Skip the editorial and just bring us our food."

I suppose it's not a bad average that I only had one bad waitstaff experience with how many good waiters and waitresses there are, but it really hurt when it happened.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

    Vigilance, not perfection.

          Re: Atkins Bashing! [RANT]

When I first heard about Atkins it was a couple of friends who were starting it. I knew nothing about.

I was explained concepts that I found perplexing:-
          • You can eat bacon and eggs for breakfast
          • FAT will help you loose Fat.
          • Carloies were not an issue, Carbohydrates were
Being fully immersed in WW, I was shocked and bewildered. I was skeptical. But I was never rude and I never critised it (because basically I didn't know about it!

LOw fat was just not working for me (it was making me fatter) so I decided to do some research on the net and the book. It took me another 4 years to start, but I was never ignorant.

I was 'open' to new ideas! Not closed minded!

Calories do matter, still, even low carbing. In the end it always comes down to calories in versus calories out. The metabolic advantage of Aktins does make a difference, in the self-limiting nature of protein and fat, and the lack of hunger. Still, people can and do get fat on Atkins. As with everything moderation is the key, as is eating when hungry and stopping when no longer hungry. In the end, Atkins is still calorie control. And that's ok.

Don't hijack the thread Cleo! LOL
              I don't wanna veer O.T. but
              my favourite quote is this:-

"There is no need to count calories. The Atkins Nutritional Approach counts grams of carbohydrates instead of calories." - Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution, Avon Books 2002 page 143.

I meant that you don't need to count calories (as was explained to me initially)

In the contex of new ideas and such and keeping an open mind.

                  Absolutely Cleo,
What I've found through being in ketosis, is this. You're just not hungry as often if you're eating the Atkins friendly foods. What this means is that you're not going to consume as many calories during a 24 hour period. You're also putting your body in a fat burning zone, so that you can take advantage of it. That's what this WOE is all about people!!! Eat the right things, but only until you don't need more, and not again until you feel you need it. It's not like you're filling your gullet every ten minutes with every fatty food you can see... You're filling yourself when you "need" to, and only until you feel satisfied. With the right food, it just doesn't take as much... thus less calories, more time spent burning them... The ketogenic advantage!!!!! It's why this works. I've looked at an average day of my diet before this WOL, and after starting, and it's hard to believe, but I'm eating all of this great food, and still consuming less calories than I used to, by a fairly large ammount. Then, count in the exercise and it's a no-brainer. You're bound to lose weight and inches. Dr. A, you have an amazing way of teaching the obvious!! We miss you!

                    Re: Atkins Bashing! [RANT]

I don't really count calories, although I do take a look at it from time to time on fitday. Lately when I find myself in short "stalls" I go into fitday and enter what I've eaten the past few days and find that I'm usually falling WAYYYYY short on my calorie intake (1000-1300/day). I up my calories just a bit and I start losing again. Bottom line is that while I'm following Atkins my hunger is satisfied and I eat less.

I ignore anyone who is an adamant nay-sayer and I explain to those who are truly interested.

Yes, Calorie control, but I am sure that a calorie is not a calorie. And it is also Atkins that causes the burning of the most calories? why? Well thats the nature of carb control.
