  • Atkins eating problem

Hi there, ive been on induction for 4 weeks now tho im not a <strict> inductioner i ignore the rules and just keep to under 20 carbs a day, have lost 30 lbs in this period, however i decided to look at the calories in what i was eating every day, and they totalled to about 700, i have tried to eatmore but ive thrown up within 15mins of eating it I have had dizzyspells and passed out twice now.... I love the eight loss tho, and will combat the problem once ive lost another 20 lb's and at my goal weight.

Yesterday i ate: 6 slices chorizo salami, a peice of cheese, and a bowl of chinese veg soup i made (about 6 carbs per bowl). Day before about 300g of chicken jalrezi and 100g prawn cocktail. this is about a quarter of what i usedto.

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    Re: Atkins eating problem

Ian if you are only eating 700 cals you need to keep in mind that of those 30lbs, probably 10lbs of it is muscle loss

Do you want to continue to lose muscle? If not Do what you can. Do stuff like add oil or use MORE oil than you previously did to anything you cook. Any veggies you eat, eat with ken's ranch dressing (95cals per TB), etc. You have to eat more protein too - like at least 100g in my opinion. I wake up every morning and drink a 50g protein shake.

    Good luck

I have some great advice, I hope it doesn't sound too harsh, but why not try following the rules? They are written in DANDR for a reason and do work!

Sorry, but I had to say it.

      Best Wishes

maybe posted to the wrong thread?

i agree with rich, if you follow the induction rules you'll be getting more calories, more protien, probably feel better and retain more muscle mass. besides eating those fats really makes this plan luscious!

                That's your problem there.

This is not a diet, and with all due respect, if you don't follow the plan then you're bound to go wrong.

Dr Atkins compiled this way of eating for a reason, because it works. You can't modify to the extent that you have and expect it to work.

You need to eat, otherwise your body is going into starvation mode, which is going to cause it to start eating away at your organs because you aren't eating enough to fuel your body in the slightest!

If you intention was merely to go low carb, then perhaps you should try cutting back on the bread, pasta, potatoes and sugar. But this is a way of eating and Dr Atkins wrote his books to guide people on doing it correctly and healthily.

                Good luck to you.

                  Re: Atkins eating problem

i had a similar problem when i first started. i felt stuffed but my calories were glaringly low. i was following the "rules" in that i was only eating acceptable foods, eating often enough, eating higher carb veggies, etc. but i have always been used to eating my veggies steamed, my chicken grilled dry, etc. having a couple devilled eggs around, adding olive oil or butter to veggies, having tuna w/ mayo, etc. has really helped me bump up my calories without over-stuffing myself. you could also slip some heavy cream into scrambled eggs or omelettes. i'm sure that adding fat and calorie laden coldcuts would make me want to vomit too. just look at your menu and see where you can slip a few extra fats and calories in and you'll find yourself able to bump up the calories fairly significantly without force-feeding yourself.

i must echo the others who said it before me: you MUST follow the rules. none of the help you will get on the forum will be valid unless you follow the plan. we're not dieticians, we just have our own experience following a prescribed plan to offer you.

                    Excellent advice!

Its only when we try to stray away from the already set rules do we faulter.

Low carb wasn't invented by Dr. Atkins, He just perfected it in my opinion...Brillian man he was.

See a doctor. It's abnormal to have stomach upset after eating and it's even more abnormal to have dizzy spells and pass out.

It's a shame you aren't following Atkins more strictly, because your diet would be more nutritionally balanced than it is now.

30 pounds in a month isn't healthy. Atkins is. Do it the RIGHT way.

I know it may not be what you want to hear but you have heard some truly advice.
The purpose of Atkins is to get healthy and look better. Well, if you are starving yourself, you are defeating the purpose of doing Atkins! I went along the same path as you during induction and even though I looked GREAT in my clothes, when I took them off I was all saggy skin with very little muscle underneath. NOT a pretty sight! And there is no telling what I did to my insides! I have changed all of that now with proper diet and exercise so it is not too late for you too!

                            Re: Atkins eating problem

First of all if you are not following the rules you are not doing atkins and if you measure verything I am sure it would not be too much food for you too eat.
                            sample menu
10r 2 eggs cooked in butter the way you like
4oz chx breast small salad with ranch
4oz steak with 1 cup broccolli

I think almost anyone could do this menu and not feel over full, I eat more than this and still lose but if you did somthing similar to this it is atkins.

There are numerous other low carb plans but this is typical of an Atkins menu!

                              Re: Atkins eating problem

Yes, you need to look more closely at the book.
IN particular -- if you're doing induction you NEED that salad.
I know, you're having veggie soup, that's great for your additional vegetable.
But there's a reason for the salad.

Before I EVER started Atkins - part of what made me understand it was valid - I used to work at a neurologist's office.

There is an actual treatment for epilepsy called "ketogenic diet." Way more strict than Atkins!, almost to starvation-level, requires medical monitoring, etc.

I spoke with a woman whose niece had uncontrolled seizures, that were gotten rid of with this diet. The total carbs allowed per day was ONE PIECE of lettuce.

BUT - here's the thing. The girl didn't like lettuce. Even the one piece. So she stopped eating it. And the whole thing got harder. Her digestion wasn't working right. She didn't want to eat at all, when she did she got ill.

Lettuce - or at least some salad vegetable, such as celery (uncooked) - is needed for digestion on this diet, particularly during induction. Otherwise you will get too not-hungry and also feel ill. Especially when eating.

Various nutrients, as well as fiber, were previously coming to your body through higher-carb methods. DO NOT wait until you've reached your goal to do eat properly. Not unless your real goal is to damage your body! This diet works, it does allow flexibility for different tastes and people, it's worth doing right!

---ALSO, if you eat your salad and soup, and if you're still not-hungry/queasy, the next step is to further increase your carbs by means of acceptable, low-carb veggies.
                              DON'T not eat enough.

---ANOTHER THING: Atkins is sometimes considered dangerous. Why? Because medical professionals confuse KETOSIS with KETOACIDOSIS. Ketoacidosis is a highly dangerous state to be in. You are describing in yourself some of its symptoms. (dizziness, passing out). Most likely caused by eating too little. You may do yourself considerable harm if you continue as you have been.

ps When you wind up at the emergency room please don't tell them you've been doing Atkins because, really, you haven't.
