  • Corn is NOT a vegetable!

I just HAD to share this with all you guys (my people - *sigh* - my source of support and comfort as I trek into this great new WOE)........

DH and I are both on Atkins. We are both very committed and strong and have never - and will never - stray. But yesterday, while out-to-eat with my in-laws, we came under EXTREMELY heavy fire for it.

Picture it: DH and I ordered steaks, salads (ranch for him, no dressing for me cuz I am de-yeasting on KISS for a few weeks), and the vegetable. Stupid me, I forgot to ask the waitress what the vegetable was. The waitress brought both of us heaping bowls of steaming yellow corn! AACK! What rotten luck!

Of course, DH and I pushed the bowls to the side, and just focused on the steak.

In doing so, my in-laws got curious - they did not understand. All they have ever known is that corn is a vegetable. And so it all began.......

...we all got into a hot and heavy debate about how:

    1) corn is a GRAIN. A starchy grain, not a vegetable.

    2) potatoes are starchy ROOT TUBERS, not vegetables.

3)No, my Type II diabetic mother-in-law did not become type II diabetic because she tried Atkins for a week in 19-whatever. (Yes, she blamed the good Dr.'s WOE on her having Type II diabetes. Sorry, MIL, but you ATE yourself to having Type II diabetes!)

    4) no, we do not want "egg beaters" in the morning for breakfast. No, "egg beaters" are not healthier than real eggs.

5)no, we are not eating dangerously, we are eating healthy

    6) no, eating low-calorie, low-cholesterol, low-fat, chemically, processed frankenfoods and counting "points" all day long is not healthier than eating fresh whole foods that either grew that way or were killed that way.

7)No, we don't want that "healthy" dessert you made with oats, fruit, and only a "little bit" of white flour. We don't care if it's only "2 points". We are not eating it!

8 ) no, Dr. A did NOT die overweight and of a heart attack!

    9) no, we are not going to "gain it all back when we go off the Atkins diet". I tried to explain the progression, the stages, the rungs!......but, alas, it was all to no avail.

    10) no, we are not depriving ourselves, hurting our health, or denying ourselves variety in our diets by not eating certain foods.

11)No, the Atkins diet is NOT all about eating mass quantities of bacon.

    12) no, margarine is not healthier than butter

13)No, the natural fats DH and I are eating will not give us high cholesterol or heartattacks. Eating starchy, sugary, carby foods will, though.

    14) and finally......no, the US governments food pyramid is NOT the way we should eat!

And they wouldn't even touch my DANDR book, or check out this website...GRRRR. I mean, if you're gonna argue with us, at least know the facts, or be willing to educate yourself on the facts.

You guys, I believe the Atkins WOE has GOT the be the number ONE most misunderstood "diet" on the planet. So many people have such solid beliefs about it that are flat-out INCORRECT.

Y'all would have been proud of DH and I, though - we came under VERY heavy fire and stood our ground together.

All this over some silly yellow, starchy CORN! Sheesh!

It really is unacceptable just how much the general public has been misinformed about Atkins and good health. The evidence is out there, but they ignore it. Thanks for sharing your story.

When people hear 'Atkins', they think 1 pound bacon and 12 eggs!!!!! I swear, I remember that 20/20 on Atkins, and the couple were eating these amounts of food!! I remember thinking it was crazy, and I was right!! Those people were NOT doing Atkins, just a modified way to eat like piggies and call it a diet!!! Does anyone else remember that??
Sorry to get off topic, but good for you and your hubby!!! Sometimes the MIL can be tough to get around, but you did GREAT!!!!!!

A friend who is a RN the other day told me she cannot do Atkins because Atkins ruins your gall bladder and she cant afford to have hers removed from eating the Atkins WOE. Of couse she spends $100 + on Blood pressure and cholestrol pills.

Yeah, I've heard that tired gallbladder rant... funny this is, my mom was a teeny-tiny-skinny, low-fat/high-carb eating, tab drinking aerobics-obsessed lady in the 80's... she would literally shudder at the mere mention of "fat."

She had her gallbladder removed after a series of attacks in 1988. My dad ate whatever the heck he wanted (pretty much high-fat, high-carb) and didn't exercise and his had ot be removed in 1989.

Hmmmm.... could it not just be a matter of fat?

Re: Corn is NOT a vegetable!

I used to have gall bladder attacks, and you know what triggered them??? FRIED POTATOS!!!! French Fries, American Fries, potato chips, etc..... They are VERY painful and I totally did NOT want my GB out, so I quit eating those foods for a year and never had another attack. I think its trans fats and over-carbing that does it. Doctors do not want to admit they are wrong about this diet!!! Not to mention, most people who have trouble on Atkins, aren't doing Atkins at all!!!! How can anyone think that stuffing yourself with junk food is more healthy that following Atkins by the book???

I so totally agree with you, I am a nurse and Low carb gets such a bad rap...funny sometime people will say how are you losing weight and I will say I cut all chips, candy, sodas and sugar and white bread and overlly procesed foods and eat healthy whole foods and vegetables and exercise and drink lots of water.

And they YEAH you are doing great then I say yes I am doing Atkins

They all think ATKINS oh my God bacon, burgers steak butter pounds of cheese...thats all you eat...I buy extra copies of DANDR at garage sales, thrift stores etc and give them out to people who don't understand... I let them keep them if they seem to want to try it.

My sister Miriam just asked me about it yesterday...I am giving her a copy

Re: Corn is NOT a vegetable!

Fantastic for sticking up for youselves against the very loud and often aggressive ignorance that masquerades for "concern" for those of us on the WoE. I do generally think people mean well -- but have very limited patience for those who stubbornly believe that I'm clearly too stupid to have made a well-informed, intelligent decision about how to eat.

When I rejoined Curves last month, the owner (who is a VERY nice lady) told me that she had to warn me about my diet if I was really doing low-carb, especially Atkins. "It destroys your kidneys, in time, and people never keep the weight off long-term." Lots of responses came to mind, mostly things I've read in similar threads. But I finally contented myself with announcing that I'd read fairly extensive research and that, while Atkins might not be the perfect plan for everyone, it was helping to reverse my insulin resistance - and is therefore the perfect plan for me at this point. And left it at that. Now, I plan to *show* her just what Atkins can do for me.

I keep thinking about xeroxing the chapter on "Low-Carb Myths" out of J. Bowden's _Living the Low-Carb Life_ and taking it to her (it debunks the kidney damage myth among others). But maybe I'll wait until I've become "living proof" a bit first...
