I just HAD to share this with all you guys (my people - *sigh* - my source of support and comfort as I trek into this great new WOE)........
DH and I are both on Atkins. We are both very committed and strong and have never - and will never - stray. But yesterday, while out-to-eat with my in-laws, we came under EXTREMELY heavy fire for it.
Picture it: DH and I ordered steaks, salads (ranch for him, no dressing for me cuz I am de-yeasting on KISS for a few weeks), and the vegetable. Stupid me, I forgot to ask the waitress what the vegetable was. The waitress brought both of us heaping bowls of steaming yellow corn! AACK! What rotten luck!
Of course, DH and I pushed the bowls to the side, and just focused on the steak.
In doing so, my in-laws got curious - they did not understand. All they have ever known is that corn is a vegetable. And so it all began.......
...we all got into a hot and heavy debate about how:
1) corn is a GRAIN. A starchy grain, not a vegetable.
2) potatoes are starchy ROOT TUBERS, not vegetables.
3)No, my Type II diabetic mother-in-law did not become type II diabetic because she tried Atkins for a week in 19-whatever. (Yes, she blamed the good Dr.'s WOE on her having Type II diabetes. Sorry, MIL, but you ATE yourself to having Type II diabetes!)
4) no, we do not want "egg beaters" in the morning for breakfast. No, "egg beaters" are not healthier than real eggs.
5)no, we are not eating dangerously, we are eating healthy
6) no, eating low-calorie, low-cholesterol, low-fat, chemically, processed frankenfoods and counting "points" all day long is not healthier than eating fresh whole foods that either grew that way or were killed that way.
7)No, we don't want that "healthy" dessert you made with oats, fruit, and only a "little bit" of white flour. We don't care if it's only "2 points". We are not eating it!
8 ) no, Dr. A did NOT die overweight and of a heart attack!
9) no, we are not going to "gain it all back when we go off the Atkins diet". I tried to explain the progression, the stages, the rungs!......but, alas, it was all to no avail.
10) no, we are not depriving ourselves, hurting our health, or denying ourselves variety in our diets by not eating certain foods.
11)No, the Atkins diet is NOT all about eating mass quantities of bacon.
12) no, margarine is not healthier than butter
13)No, the natural fats DH and I are eating will not give us high cholesterol or heartattacks. Eating starchy, sugary, carby foods will, though.
14) and finally......no, the US governments food pyramid is NOT the way we should eat!
And they wouldn't even touch my DANDR book, or check out this website...GRRRR. I mean, if you're gonna argue with us, at least know the facts, or be willing to educate yourself on the facts.
You guys, I believe the Atkins WOE has GOT the be the number ONE most misunderstood "diet" on the planet. So many people have such solid beliefs about it that are flat-out INCORRECT.
Y'all would have been proud of DH and I, though - we came under VERY heavy fire and stood our ground together.
All this over some silly yellow, starchy CORN! Sheesh!

What would we do without it?
