You don't really know what I'm doing, Cleo. I could be doing higher rungs of Atkins. Not that it's any of your business.

How's your weight loss going? You seem to be stuck.

      Re: Do calories count?

Any wonder why threads get locked? I actually had a question to ask the forum regarding calories and now I've lost my appetite to post.

Binsk if you thing that one was high wait till you get to nuts and seeds and see how much fiber you can have in your foods. There were actually days where I had more fiber then net carbs

actually if as a good atkineer you learn your hunger through practicing Dr Atkins hunger learning drill in the induction chapters of DANDR and only feed it as you count your carbs you will consume only enough fuel to feed the fuel needs of your body at that time and stop, nicely appling the Atkins brakes.

{{{Perry}}} You should be able to ask questions without fear of having your bones jumped. I think this board is big enough for varying opinions... it's definitely big enough for people not following Atkins, let alone those of us who are.

            Re: Do calories count?

Binsk, you are close. There is the fiber, as 2big mentions. However, the ratio you mentioned is only applicable to Induction, which was designed to last only two weeks. After that, you customize the plan, so it's hard to assign a ratio to everyone.

However, you're absolutely correct in thinking that the lower calories you consume on Atkins are responsible for the weight loss. Bottom line is you have to burn more that you consume, whether that's by severe restriction, exercise, thermogenic properties of the foods, whatever.

Of course, reading between the lines, Dr. Atkins promotes exercise and moderate restriction. By its very nature, extremely low carb dieting *tends* to lead to automatic caloric restriction (eating to your hunger) however this is not automatic and some people focus on 20g/day to the exclusion of all else he said in the book. Sadly, those people will only lose weight by sheer luck.

I think as long as you use calorie counting as a tool to guide your food choices and not an absolute rule, it definitely has a place in Atkins. Use his rules and keep your calories under your basal metabolic rate and you will lose weight and get proper nutrients.

Personally, I don't understand the hate toward recognizing the full nutritional value of what you put in your body, but don't let the zealotry get in your way.

                Re: Do calories count?

OMG this is insane! is it just to prove that you can say something and it is right? Calories count...everything counts..eating massive amounts of food every day makes you fat ...HELLO??????

I think the silliest part of this is that we are trading one obsession for another and now the obsession is to be RIGHT and that is getting very annoying I think...

want the truth..I am a tiny woman and got fat counting calories as I have said before...

funny part is I quit and just started eating normal sized food as a result of following the guildlines in the book...
Looking for trigger foods...feelling good and not eating a bunch of shiit food...

one solid week I used fitday...I was eating 2000 and more calories a day and lost weight ....

then I realized I was staring at numbers again..the same thing that made me fat in the first place...obsessing on it....

well people ..you have made your point...calories count ..for something...do you need to count them on this way of eating...absolutely not... ...eat right move your asss and try to find something else to do with yourself ...

unless you want to count calories then go in a calorie controled diet and let this crap rest....

and please do not tell me because you had more fat to loose your struggle is special..because you know what???? it isn't and I am sick of that argument as well...we all have issues ...

                  Re: Do calories count?

keep your calories under your basal metabolic rate
see this is the issue with those folk promoting cal counting. were you placed in a seal container and tested to see what your actual caloric needs were or do you just get a number you magically think is your number and focus on it? the BMR sites most folk select theirs from have no idea if you are say a marshmellow 260 pounder or an hulking muscular 260 pound athlete like say Karl Malone was when the inintial BMI data came out and said he was obese. needless to say those BMI discoverers quickly backtracked and said their data only applied to non athletes and finally didn't apply to folk who were muscular but the BMR folk don't say oh by thre way if you are muscluar you need more cals then this or ifyou are a fluffy marshmellow build you need less, all folk your age your sex your height and your weight get the same number of clas a day.
So you are either eating too much for your body or too little for your body but by god you've got your number and hey if eating that number and counting your carbs doesn't melt off the pounds well them Atkins doesn't work for you. That is just one of the issues with the cal counting folk. But if by some chance the number they picked is low enough that on the overeating days they can burn them off on the undereating days they will arrive close to goal but not know how to listen to their bodies to stay there. Cause they have been using an emergency brake the whole time on their eattign, day in and day out, and now they have to do that for life cause they don't know how little food it takes to fuel them each day based on their body needs. it is like setting the cruise control on 35 and driving every where, some roads over the limit and many roads under the limit, but going toward the place you want to get.

Yep. And there is a reason this board follows the book, remember??

Barbde-- My comment was directed towards the issues of calorie counting while following Atkins. The two are not mutually exclusive.

I'm sorry for any confusion my post may have caused.

And my point is that you are being contradicting Cleo. Show me where in the book calorie counting is suggested and the whole thing will be solved. Seems you like to keep coming back just to stir this up. What happened to this board being "by the book" and it being a good thing???
