        Here's some info.

        Catholic Roots of Mardi Gras

It's basically one last fling, a farewell to the things of the flesh, before lent.

          Re: Today is Shrove Tuesday!

Yes we have Pancake Tuesday in Canada. Mardi Gras is the same thing as is Carnival (which means farewell to meat in Latin). The idea behind all of this was to feast before the Lenten fast. There are 5 stages of fast, all of them include removing meat from your diet for the 40 counted days. Different parts of the world adhere to different stages of the fast ie. in North America it is mostly giving up meat. It is believed that Lent is to immulate Christ's 40 days in the desert where he fasted the whole time. So you are to give up something that you eat every day, such as meat, and when your body craves it, you are to pray instead and are reminded of your connection with Christ. There are some parishes that feel that nowadays the fast if too hard and they say just give up something that you like, such as chocolate. Strict Orthodox religions follow the most severe level of fast which is no flesh meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish. Most religions have fasting days, or restrictions such as Ramedan to teach us self control and deepen your spiritual connections.

While I don't follow Lent, I will observe some restrictions.

                            hi,

our King Cake comes with two little things hidden inside. I samml figurine or something made of metal. It used to be gold or silver but not anymore., and a fava been.
One person will get the small present that we call "brinde", and someone else will get the fava which means this person will have to pay for the cake next year...

                            weird portuguese traditions...

Tradition in my house on "Fat Tuesday" as it is called in the U.S.

Hot wings, garlic parmesan wings, celery, buffalo shrimp etc.
fries with chili, cheese and all the good stuff
                                pitchers of beer
                                cajun music
                                beads
                                and ice cream before bed!

LOL! I'll probably go into a sugar shock if I would eat most of that stuff. I will probably have a couple of beers and wings and hit the floor running in the morning with a major hangover....lol! This is all after I run this afternoon? GO FIGURE!!

Mardi Gras is really special to us. I'm hispanic but my husband is a "Louisiana Boy" so we have to do it up right!

My daughter went to school this morning all decked out in her beads and glitter makeup and wearing the "Gold, green & purple" as am I here at work..hehe!

                                HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!
