I don't think she's the greatest person to atke advice from, but she has hit the nail on the head with this one. If you don't like yourself, you'll never succeed at anything for yourself.

        Re: Oprah Says

Here is something I was thinking about the other day. I have noticed that people treat me much different now. I was wondering ........is it me? OR ......did they think less of me when I was heavier? I am leaning toward the fact that people thought less of me when I was heavier, or maybe felt I was less of a person? And you know what, the whole idea REALLY made me mad! I am still me!
What has truly amazed me on this weight loss journey is I really think that as we shrink physically we grow in our understanding of life and see things differently then before. In a way we are blessed as we can see things from both sides now.

I think its a bit of both...I think we show more confidence when slimmer and also people do judge us as unworthy and worthless and beneath them when we are overweight.

I see the goverment making statements in the UK here about obesity that doesnt help either....

and we all can see how "slim" gordon brown and john prescott are cant we?

              Re: Oprah Says

Bren I've thought about that a lot. I don't think people thought much of me at all when I was heavier. I didn't allow them to know me. I avoided them and I was not a fun person to be around. Once my fat-coat was shed...I was so excited and full of energy that I smiled more, went out more, took chances and let people know me. This opened up a world that I'd never known.

I know some people have a problem with heavy people. They treat them differently...but I also think for me it was part my fault. I am now a believer that we are responsible for our own lives. We can choose to improve it or feel sorry for ourselves.

              Thats all....just my opinion.

I have to agree with Oprah on this. You gotta love yourself first, in order for people to love you!

                  Re: Oprah Says

For some people fat and stupid go hand in hand, as if there is no possible way that someone overweight could possibly have a brain. I started college when I was 29 and wow--the way some of those "kids" treated me. Then about half way through the semester when they realized my grades were far above average, I was suddenly invited to study groups and the like. Kind of sad really to think that a persons outer appearance is so judged.

I think it is hard to be truly happy with yourself when others tend to treat you poorly. That is not to say that someone CAN'T, but it is certainly more difficult and takes much self talk and work.

                    Re: Oprah Says

There is a woman at my office that is quite large and she is extremly outgoing and always smiling and you can tell she is just really happy with herself. People are drawn to her .

I think it depends on your personality, early years and home life.

I have met some really confident and happy large people or those who are perceived as "ugly". I have also met "pretty" people who are very insecure and unhappy. It is twofold: It comes from within and people respond to how you act.

                      Re: Oprah Says

I agree with oprah. I always shied away from other people and thought why would they want to be friends with me? I did not want to go out in public because I thought people were looking at me. I often feel like I don't deserve things that everyone else does because of my weight and that is my fault.
