  • Dessert Crisis!

I feel like a food crisis is looming over me!
After dinner (7:00PM), we get to go with our Senior daughter to a "dessert" Rotary Club thing. There will be awards and such and though we don't know that she will get an award, I would hate to be the mom who missed an award, ya know! You can't get those moments back.
Anyway, this whole dessert thing is bothering me. I can say "no, thanks" or put one in front of me and "play" with it-making someone at my table think it isn't any good. Then there are all the comments about "being good" if they know I'm dieting. I don't usually feel this kind of pressure about these things. I just feel that a slide right now would send me spiraling out of control so I have to have a plan. And if my DH caves in (he's more prone to that sort of thing than I am), I'm afraid I'll lose my footing.

    Re: Dessert Crisis!

CLose your eye and remember how you felt right before you decided to lose weight. Then try to recall how great you felt when you saw the scales start to go down. Look at that piece of dessert and realize that it is probably 3-5 pounds waiting to happen and that is only IF you don't cave in to the sugar cravings that will probably follow!

    Bad cake...Bad!

We know you can do it!

      Re: Dessert Crisis!

I've started just telling people I can't eat sugar. I don't say it's a diet, I just say it's a choice. If someone asks just say, "It makes me sick," a statement which is quite true: fat = sick. Either they think you're diabetic or just sugar sensitive. Trying not to ruin your diet isn't being rude.

        Re: Dessert Crisis!

I used to say "I can't eat sugar." and now I say "I don't eat sugar" now that my will power has gotten stronger.

As mentioned when you say you 'can't', people will back off, because it sounds like a medical reason. If they ask you why, just say it messes with your blood sugars really badly, and as long as you stay away from it you're fine....and basically that's true, so you aren't fibbing.

What I found really interesting was when I told people how long it's been since I've had a sugary thing (2 years!!!!) they look at me like I'm some sort of super hero to have stayed away from it for so long! It's pretty funny...

I agree with Moochie and Killerbombshell, just say that you can't eat sugar. Its not rude to want to be healthy! Trust me, the only thing people will think is that they wish they had YOUR willpower! If you eat one, you may eat several desserts (that is how I used to be) and that will make you feel terrible as soon as you eat them. You can do it, we believe in you!!! Please let us know how it turns out.
What would we do without it?

I've only been doing this 2 weeks and that is exactly what I tell people when sugar/carbs are offered. Just tell them you cant eat sugar. Or just help my self to a cup of coffee - they always have coffee. If you dont drink coffee, then tea or even hot water! LOL If you have something in your hand most people will leave you alone. Good luck and tell us how it went!

              Re: Dessert Crisis!

One of the hardest things for many people at the beginning of their Atkins journey towards better health and a slimmer figure is learning how to cope with this sort of 'social pigging-out' occasion.
Congratulations on deciding to find a way of not eating food not on your eating plan.
As others have said, you could just say 'I dont eat sugar' (and be admired for your willpower!)
Another way would be to contact the organiser and ask if there will be any 'savoury' dessert food - like cheese - available. Then you could put some nice chunks of cheese on your plate (with crackers if you dont want to look odd) and just eat the cheese.
Nowadays ,with there being so many health scares about foods, most people accept that some of us have to eat differently to the 'average' - some people cant eat gluten products or are diabetic for instance - that most caterers are used to being asked for a choice.
Whatever way you choose to cope with this I am sure if you look around at the others attending you will see several other guests not eating the sugary desserts. I have a skinny friend who never eats sweets of puddings and no-one ever looks at her funnily for not doing so!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                Re: Dessert Crisis!

I did not eat dessert! DD sat at a table of people who we don't really know well. While she and her friend chatted, we got to know the other parents. I did get up and get water and coffee during the moment when everyone started eating. By the time I got back, it wasn't even awkward.

Since it usually isn't a problem for me I guess maybe I really thought I might WANT that dessert when the time came. DH was even luckier! his place didn't have any dessert in front of him! He couldn't even be tempted. So he drank the coffee I brought him.

I guess knowing I got through that temptation will help the next time.

                        WooHoo for you!

I usually opt for a cup of coffee or tea for "dessert" at restaurants and meetings, too.
