  • Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

I initially posted a question about this, and wanted to start a post dedicated to this in particular because of the extreme popularity of diet colas. When in the induction phase, it is very important to keep those carbs under 20. I was sick of drinking water and wanted a Diet Right, but did not know the TRUE carb content. After talking with the Diet Rite Company (complete waste of time), and the McNeil Company (Manufacturers of Splenda), I was able to come up with the following SOLID conclusion about the ACTUAL carb content of Diet Rite cola.

McNeil, the manufactuer of Splenda creates this product in two forms, the powder, measureable form, and the pure liquid sucralose form. In the pure form there are ZERO literal carbs. In the pourable powder form, there are the equalivalent of one carb per packet. Where does the 1 carb come from in the pourable/measurable form? From the "fillers" used to bulk the product up for volume.

When soda manufacturers purchase "Splenda" for their colas, they are purchasing it in pure liquid form (there is no need for fluff/filler agents), and therfore the can of Diet Rite has ZERO literal carbs per can. This took a lot of looking in to, the Diet Rite customer service reps would not talk about quantitative content of anything because the information is "Proprietary" - of course.

But, the gem of information comes in knowing that soda manufacturers use pure sucralose in the creation of the cola, and unless you see the words "maltodextrin" the filler, listed in the ingredients, then you are dealing with a PURE Sucralose product, and therefore you are drinking ZERO CARBS!

Time to crack open a Diet Rite cola (Without Guilt or Concern).

By the way, I do not consider a cola product that has zero calories, zero carbs, and zero sodium, to be "Junk Food". Coke or Pepsi in original form, or with Aspartame is junk food in my book.

I hope this helps everyone that enjoys cola and misses the refreshing taste!

You might be interested to follow this link and read the posts. It illuminates exaclty what I am talking about here. In these posts, a number of cyclists are talking about this very subject. It proves my point.

    Congratulations Cola lovers.

The confusion on all of this started when cola companies put the "Splenda" label on the can/bottle. When we see that label we think of the packet and then think of the carbs.

Bottom line - Cola companies use the Liquid form of Splenda and is completely absent of carbohydrates. Interesting that companies have not come out with the liquid form of sucrlose - my understanding is, it is a hundred times sweeter than sugar and consumers would have a hard time measuring out so litle of the product as to add the right amount of sweetness.

Per Dr. Atkins, you need to count each serving of that cola as 1 of the 3 daily sweetener allotments. Moreover you still need to drink at least 64 ounces of water (mineral, spring, filtered or tap). (DANDR 2002, Chapters 11 & 15)

It's okay to drink. BUT you can't replace it for the daily minimum 64 ounces of water (mineral, spring, filtered or bottled). Also each serving must be counted as 1 of the 3 daily sweetener allotments.

I think diet rite has always been generally acceptable as long as counted as one of your allotments - one of the main caveats with it is that sometimes newbies will overdue it and not focus on drinking lots of water which is very important.....

I would limit this to one a day, if you have to have it, but only after your water has been drank. Personally, I only drink water. I don't even miss soda anymore, but that is just MY opinion and the choice that I make personally.

Re: Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

For the life of me, I do not understand why people are so hesitant to drink Diet Drink and still, in light of this information, talk about counting it as One Sugar Substitute allotment at day. The reason I posted this information about Diet Rite, is so you all realize, they use the liquid form of Splenda which is Sucralose. Sucralose has no - ZERO carbs, and not only that, you would have to drink about 40 cans to get teh equivilant of 1 measurable carb. I realize it is excess that got us all into trouble in the first place and I am not advocating going out and polishing off a case of Diet Rite a day. I am simply stating a fact about the production of this soda, and how it relates to total carb intake. Diet Rite has zero carbs because of the aforementioned reasons. The Aktin's Diet is a very restrictive diet. Enjoy the cola, and quit worrying about the carb content of THIS PARTICULAR SODA - Diet Rite.

Re: Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

Concerns come with people who have cravings triggered by sweet things. If you crave sweet, then sweet is sweet. It starts a chain reaction and then you want more sweet. No matter how many carbs, calories, caffeine, etc, your brain senses sweet, and in some people this is bad.

                      Also

carbonated water, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, potassium benzoate (preservative), potassium citrate, sucralose (Splenda brand, a non-nutritive sweetener), acesulfame potassium (Sunett Brand, a non-nutritive sweetener), caramel color, red 40, blue 1
Nutrition facts: Calories 0; Total fat 0g; sodium 0mg; total carb 0g; protein 0g

Those are the ingredients and nutrition facts for a diet rite kiwi.
Many people who've found Atkins to be the Way and the Word are advocates for natural also.

Potassium Benzoate: "It is approved for use in most countries including Canada, the U.S., and the EU. In the EU, it is not recommended for consumption by children"

Potassium Citrate: "is chiefly employed as a non-irritating diuretic"

acesulfame potassium: "calorie free artificial sweetener"

This is why you're going to find resistance. I'm glad you found something you enjoy, but there are a lot of people here who have found that artificial color, flavor and so on is detrimental to their health.

Re: Diet Rite Cola Has Literally Zero Carbs!!

IMHO the point Dr. Atkins was trying to make of limiting the (even 1 carb packets) sweeteners during INDUCTION (the first two weeks) was to kick bad habits. Looking for sweet products (whether they are 0 carb, 1 carb or even more carb) is feeding bad habits. For some people there is a response in the brain to the sweet taste as opposed to the the carb count (or lack thereof) which then triggers cravings for things other than the soda. Soda has sodium in them, hence the name, which can also contribute to water retention problems.

Now, some people have NO problem consuming a can of soda per day. Some people do. What I fear is that the people who do have a problem with consuming too much soda will read a post like this and say I can drink soda all I want because it has zero carbs. Technically it's true. But, when they then gain water weight or they have cravings...they'll be in here asking why oh why doesn't this work for me.

I say leave the sodas out of your program for the first two weeks. TWO WEEKS folks, isn't that long!! If you want the diet rite soda after that, go ahead and drink it IN ADDITION to your MINIMUM 64 oz of water. If you don't stall, and if it doesn't give you any cravings...GREAT. But treat it like a treat...which is what it is. This is the same precipice you will be following when adding back ANY other foods in On-going Weight Loss. So, treat the soda the same.

You can not drink 'all the Diet Rite' you want and not count it towards your daily limit! That doesn't even make sense!!! It has liquid Splenda in it, which is still Splenda!! HELLO!!! If you want to 'do Atkins', then follow the rules. I think Dr. A knew what he was doing when he limited the sweeteners to 3 a day.
