Re: good fat bad fat SB Atkins grains starches life

Jen, I'll take another look. I never was a yogurt eater to begin with...but as part of "working my Atkins" I'm taking chances on foods I thought I didn't like. The low carb yogurt was one of them. Maybe the fact that it's watery is why I'm liking it LOL I tried the Dannon too and it tasted chalky to me compared to the Blue Bunny.

Melinda, I only eat 1/2 a tortilla at a time too. It's just the right size to satisfy me. I haven't had rabbit in years and years. Maybe I'll try to see if I can find some around here...that'd be really good. My neighbor raises goats for meat...and I'll eat that when they cook it...kinda Ropa Vieja style.

Samantha, I don't see the allure of the bars and shakes either. After trying slimfast years and years ago, that was the end of trying shakes for me. I only recently gave the whey protein isolate shake a try..I'd rather cook with it than just make a shake. I tried the bars the first time on Atkins and they were just plain nasty. Now, I have made some pretty awesome desserts using cream, cream cheese, whey protein, berries, splenda and cocoa. They are far superior in taste, nutrition, and satisfaction than any bar I could buy. And because they don't have the sugar alcohols in them, I don't have any problems with cravings.

Probably because they don't put free 'prizes' at the bottom of a container of yogurt

I'm waaay late to this party, but have to throw in my 2 cents...I totally agree variety equals success on Atkins!

And here's another cent and a half...I love the greek yogurt too, the texture if great. But, it's not readily available where I live, so I've found if I take my mini-strainer and lined it with a paper coffee filter, put a container of regular plain yogurt in, top with another paper coffee filter...then put it in the fridge (overnight) with a bowl to catch the whey...then in the a.m. add a little splenda syrup (or any of the goodies Heidi mentioned) and yum...it really has that nice thick texture and isn't so bitter, not quite greek like but darn close!

So much to comment on... If I forget anything, I'll add it later.

                          RE: boxed low carb foods.

These make me laugh. About 6 months into my atkins, I began reading Dr. A.'s other books. In all of them, he makes the point about eating whole, minimally processed foods and that how our practice of 'convenience' eating has ruined our health because all those boxed "foods" are packed with loads of additives, preservatives and who knows what else. For this board, I read the boxes of this stuff and sure after reading the 99th ingredient (very small print), not only do I need to make an appointment with my ophthalmogist, it also makes me wonder who would pay $5.99 for 2 servings of chemicals?

It's a marketing ploy. Pure and simple.

                          Re: low carb salad dressings

About 5 months ago, I was in the supermarket reading the label of a "Low Carb" blue cheese dressing. It was a 6 ounce bottle for $3.45. I read the ingredients. Next to this low carb product was a bottle of blue cheese dressing made by the same manufacturer. This non-low carb dressing was 8 ounces for $2.45. It had the same ingredients as the "Low Carb" dressing! I think I said something like "Un-freaking-believable" aloud. Someone behind me asked "Is something wrong, Ma'am?" It was the produce manager. I showed him the bottles and explained that they were the same product, but one was more expensive because it was "low carb". He shook his head and said "Maybe that's why I have trouble selling this stuff!".

Again, another attempt by manufacturers to take money out of our wallets because they think we're so stupid, we'll buy anything labeled "Low carb"

                          Re: fake dairy

I suppose if you are lactose intolerant, these products might come in handy. But the low fat diet industry also made it in vogue for everyone else to use these products. Come on, let's have a show of hands...who likes Cool Whip over real whipped cream? Or the non-dairy creamers over real cream? Or margarine over butter? And the ironic thing is that these products are constantly being improved to taste like the real things. So, they have more additives, more preservatives and who knows what else than the real thing.

This is what the food industry has done to our tastebuds over the last 40 or 50 years. It's made us prefer the fake foods over the real, natural foods.

                          Re: food variety

You need it. Not only to prevent bordeom, but also to give you better nutrition. Yeah sure, we all want to lose weight. But what's the point of losing weight and being unhealthy during that process and after?

ok I will give concession to soy/yogurt cheese ect but even that is over processed to make it seem like something else ...I say take some tofu and make it into something yummy and save money on all those labels and pakaging

I go to a Korean Market that makes its own tofu ..it is so good that I actually have to resist eating it right out of the bag on the way home....seriously ..if you can find a tofu company or Asian store that specialized in fresh tofu ..OMG you would not believe it if I told you

Tofu is alittle different because the processing of the soybean makes it edible by deactivating a substance that blocks protein digestion and a substance that causes red blood cells to clump together.
                                http://www.rheumatic.org/soy.htm

So in this case, processing actually makes the food edible.
