  • Weight gain with exercise?

Has anyone found a temporary weight increase when starting or upping their cardio? I had been exercising just twice a week and seemed to be fine and now that I have upped it to 5 times this week I am up 2 lbs. My eating seems fine so wondering about the effects of exercise as to whether working on the EFX is causing a slight water gain as if clinging to new muscle areas. I have been having over 100 oz. of water a day but yet not nearly running to the bathroom as before. I know measure, measure, yada, yada. But seriously did anyone notice this when first adding exercise to the WOE?

Yep, I held water the first few days after I started an exercise routine. It leveled off for me after a couple weeks.

I am glad you posted this ? as I am experiencing the same thing you are right now.
I started walking 3 miles a day (fast walk) for 6 days a week and watching my carbs religiously. Now I too have a weight gain and it makes me mad because I upped my exercist to get off the weight! Are you close to your goal weight? I don't have much
to loose now (15lbs) and my clothes are fitting tighter but the scale is now down.

Miss Phobe~ Thank you gives me hope!

Richt~ But 2 lbs of muscle built in a week or two?

Pie~ No not close to my goal I am 166 (not counting the 2 I am up) and my first goal is 140 but optimal weight for 5'2 is around 120, so actually looking at 46 lbs. yet to rid.
But yes so frustrating thinking I will up the exercise to lose quicker and the scale goes the other way. Bummer!

Probably not, but I am just throwing in a number of different possible solutions. I think Miss Phodes water retention suggestion is the most likely.

Yep, whenever I switch my routine I'll gain for a few days until the body adjusts itself. If you're going to do more exercise, now's the time to get out the tape measure or an outfit that's snug...and use those as guides instead of the scale. The extra exercise is going to give you more visible results quicker...which is what you want!

So glad to see that this has happened to others before and that it too shall pass. Will keep up with the 5 days a week now that I know what is actually going on. Thanks all for the responses.

Took me a rest day from exercise yesterday and was able to drop those excess water pounds. Now the next time it happens I won't freak out!

                    Re: Weight gain with exercise?

Yup, it defininetly happens. 6 Weeks ago I started at the Fitness Center. (I had been working out hard at home with videos before that for about a year) Anyway. They checked my body fat %. I was at 29.something % and 168 pounds. Got it checked again on Monday. 24.7% body fat and 173 pounds! I know I am retaining water, as my buddy TOM is MIA. But still! It is strange, but it is true. I lost 5% body fat and gained 4 pounds!!
Just keep doing what you are doing, and watch your body morph!! Hang in!!

                      Re: Weight gain with exercise?

This is a good thing for me to ready today as I just got my exercise videos in and am starting them tonight. I have a 50 minute aerobics I plan to do 5 times a week and a 20 minute toning I'll add 3 times a week. So I'll try not to weigh everyday but maybe wait a couple of weeks so I don't get depressed if I gain and not lost right away.

I'd MUCH rather gain a pound or 2 and have my body TONED, than weigh less and look like a balloon with the air let out of it.

dont stress about the 2 pound weight gain , I gained 5 pounds when I started useing a exersize machine my hubby bought, its just lean muscle gain , and you are still losing fat. thats why I rely on the tape measurer more then the scale.

Not sure what happened but I did do my exercise dvd last night and this morning I woke up with my hands feeling swollen and I gained 5 pounds since yesterday. I'm not happy and hope if I drink lots of water today I lose that water weight. I did drink a bottle of water while exercising but then after that I had only one more bottle the rest of the night and also took pain and muscle relaxer meds before bed. Maybe just a combination of not enough water, the meds, and body holding onto water after exercising???? Not sure but I didn't have anything out of the ordinary to eat so it wasn't that.

So glad to see this discussion - same thing happening here. Salt seems to compound it; like before TOM which is a stress to certain parts of the body, probably the damage to muscles that are first introduced to more workload than they're accustomed to results in the body conserving extra fluids during the recovery stage. My 2-cent guess...
