Re: kinda funny thing at work

A friend of a friend used pills for weight loss ( I dont know which ones) and after a week or so she fainted at work.

Pills are dangerous and abit of a cheat. Weight loss is through diet and exercise, hard work and motivation.
      We can do it!!

They are like cheating in a way... but at the same time I sometimes think "who cares how it comes off, just as long as it does"... then I wonder how I'll keep it off in the long run... sigh!
They are dangerous! It' is frustrating to eat so much just before TOM comes to visit. and thats when I start to think about an appetite supressant... thank god it only lasts about a week!
        Just say no!

Re: kinda funny thing at work

Everyone has to do what works best for them. It could be true that people using diet drugs are looking for a quick fix or are lazy, but it could also be true that after consideration and consultation with their doctors they decided that a drug was the best approach for them. There are undoubtably people who tried Atkins and decied it was not for them for whatever reason, and there are reasons people might decide this. At least people who use perscription drugs are under the supervision of a doctor. I would guess few using Atkins are.

I'm happy to do what works for me and let others do what's right for them. Everyone needs to make their own decisions and everyone trying to lose weight needs some support.

Re: kinda funny thing at work

Phen/fen was recommended to me when I was a lot bigger. I'm glad I didn't take it cuz I already had mitral valve prolapse and I coulda been one of the death statistics.

Sorry, but doctors have been trained to give out SOMETHING to everyone who appears in their offices. (Read Dr. Mendelsohn's books on it.) We as health care consumers need to weigh our options and decide whether drugs are worth the risks, unknown risks included. Sometimes they are - I'm not totally anti-drug. Maybe Atkins is not for everyone, but most of the people I know who said they tried it have not even read the book, much less followed it.

I have friends who have lost weight on L.A. Weight loss or low-fat diets, and I'm as supportive as I can possibly be, and share their exuberation over weight loss. But having been on/off (mostly ON) Atkins for three years now I know that it's just plain hard to make the lifestyle decisions necessary to attain and maintain a healthy size body. The big draw for a pill is that I don't have to exercise self-control. I admit that, like others here, I have been tempted to try the quick, easy solutions that are advertised. But logic tells me that if they really did work, nobody in the US would be overweight!!!

Those of us who have struggled (and still struggling) with making permanent changes to our WOL need to wake up and smell the coffee, put our Splenda and heavy cream in it (or just say NO), and stick to the plan. The simple question that I personally have to ask myself every day is "What do I REALLY want?" The answer is NOT a Swiss Roll or Krispy Kreme or those potato chips, it's a slim, healthy ME. And that is going to take WORK and COMMITMENT, not putting my health at risk in exchange for a temporary cosmetic fix.

              You said it all!

I had an awful ephedrine habit back in the day... I lost 60 lbs (230 to 170) on it 6 years ago, but it literally made me crazy... I was on anti-anxiety meds for nearly 3 years after I got off the ephedrine because it whacked my moods out so much (didn't stop after I stopped taking it). The worst irony: the anti-anxiety meds took my weight from 170 to 260, and then I gained up to 281 when I quit my job to go back to school and quit smoking at the same time. So how effective were those diet pills in the long-term?

Hard work and commitment make it stick. It'll stick to you if you stick to it!
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

              Vigilance, not perfection.
