  • What happened?

I just got back from a week long vacation, and so it wasn't so much of a surprise to me that when I finally steped back on the scales I was 150 (up from 145). I decided to nip it in the bud and started going to fitness classes. Drinking 72 oz of water, lowered my carbs to 35 (down from 50) as well (and cut out the higher rung carbs such as grains, etc).

I started Tuesday by with one hour in the morning (a combo of elliptical and weight training), in the evening it was a step class for an hour. Wednesday was a hour long spinning class. Thursday was the evening step class again. Friday morning I had a spinning class.

So I stepped on the scales this morning and am 160! What on earth? I tracked my calories on fitday, I never went above 1300.

    Re: What happened?

First off in order to gain one little pound you would have had to eat well over 3,000 calories... so we know you did not do that!
Think about it. Your body needs time to adjust to the exercise you have added in.
What has happened is not unusual at all. Your muscles are hanging on to things to compensate for the work outs.
    Give it time to adjust!!!!!!
Also, it could be THAT time of month. Never let the scale get you down. Sarah made a post here just yesterday about gaining.......... but, her body fat went down! Realize the scale IS going to flucuate and learn from it. Your body is NOT a machine and reacts differently to different things you do to it.
Scales will not tell you about lean muscle mass!!!
Use all the tools at your disposal..........tape measure, body fat etc etc. It is your body and you have to learn how it reacts and why!

I didn't think I could gain that much in muscle after just four days, and TOM's about two weeks down the line. So muscle's can hold onto tons of water? I thought I was sweating it out.

        Re: What happened?

I suggest you go and do a clean induction for 2 weeks.Your body probably got used to the way of eating you opted to do over your vacation and needs a kick start. The food you ate, also might not have added pounds til later, this sometimes happens. Its just a reminder, that even the slightest cheat may not show up on the scales the next day, but a few days down the line.Drop the extra 15 carbs and do induction, I bet the weight comes right off, especially with all the exercise you are doing.Good luck.

          Re: What happened?

honey if you ate any sugar when you were on vacation? ...flying? .....hormones?

whatever from what you are saying it is probably water ..just keep drinking water eating right ...continue your exercise and wait to step on the scales again until you feel your clothing is loose...

even when I am perfect on vacation if I fly ...loose sleep then a few lbs come on ...but they also come off in a couple of weeks you have been and will be just fine I bet

            Re: What happened?

you didn't understand what Bren was saying you didn't add muscle you added fluids to your muscles it is called superhydrating. Muscles are genetically programed to help you survive and when you place a new to them load on them they naturally react as if sometime terribel was after you cause nobody works them that hard for fun they store everything they can to protect you as that thing thats after you might still be around and they will need to quickly get you safe. Once they learn your new to them work load is their normal work load they will release the fluids and you will get a nice whoose.

Many of us go through this every time we ioncrease the plates on our weight lifting workouts.

              Re: What happened?

I just also have to say that on one occasion, I returned home after a trip (it was a long flight) and gained 5 pounds! It was gone as soon as it came though. I'm going to agree that whatever's causing the weight gain isn't significant - it's probably water weight. Just keep doing what you're doing and wait 'til your clothes feel looser, like Heidi said.

                Re: What happened?

I didn't eat anything different, I'm pretty sure that it was just overindulging on atkins friendly food because I couldn't watch my calories on fitday (I kept a journal but there was a lot of guessing) and ate out of boredom (very long car ride ). It's really interesting about the muscle's holding onto water, I hope they give up soon.

Do you think I really need to restart to induction? I'm just trying to be careful because I heard you only get so many chances doing that.

By the way, I usually work out on my own (about 45 minutes three times a week, I got lax with slim in 6 I admit), but those classes are addictive! I highly recommend them to anyone that's got access

                  Re: What happened?

first wait for the new exercise program to balance out and your return to propper Atkins eating.

if that doesn't get you back down if you are out of ketosis then you do 3-4 days of induction eating to get your ketossi going then you go back to your premaintnenance eating to shed the few pounds you got

                    Re: What happened?

It's my third day of induction eating and I'm still going to all the classes I listed above. I'm down to 154 at least (that's the high weight I get when I step on the scale, it tends to give me a couple if I try more), and I'm hoping it keeps up. I've got a trip to paris monday next week, but this time besides the 6 hour rule I'm nly snacking on water!

Good job, told you it would come off, down 6lbs in 3 days is awesome, must just be water weight.

Do your clothes feel ok, Pineapple? Because it sounds like you're making healthy choices and doing well... if your clothes fit ok, I'd think you were doing fine and the scale is being a big stupidhead, especially with the recent 6-lb whoosh.

                          Re: What happened?

Sounds like you got a good handle on it. Besides having the muscle water retention, you may have also eaten more salt, which will put water on you for awhile, and the extra weight of the food itself refilling fairly empty gut space can make a difference on the scales until you pass it.
