  • Help! Mexican food!

Tomorrow I'm going to lunch at a Mexican restaurant. I almost said no, but I just can't stop going to lunch now and then. You can only sit at your desk so long every day!

I was thinking maybe chicken fajitas... chicken, green peppers, onions, chopped tomato.... and not eating the tortillas. I don't think they add any kind of sauce to them, just stir fried. They always bring a big plate of beans, rice, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, but if I leave the beans and rice alone, I should be okay.

Any suggestions? I'm so inspired right now, I don't want to blow it... and Mexican is a fave!

STick to the grilled meats and avoid sauces. You might want to ask the server if they add any sugar or flour to their grilled food too---sugar and flour are sometimes added to things you would never dream of.

Fajitas sounds good...should be okay. You could just tell the waiter up front that you don't want beans and rice. That way it won't be sitting right in front of you, tempting you. Have fun.

Another thing I often eat when I have mexican food is taco salad without the shells... Usually, they're pretty okie dokie about not bringing the shells with you, and honestly who needs 'em?

I hope you have a great lunch!

I go to a local Mexican restaurant, occasionally or more often, we get take out from it. I talked to the cook when I first started Atkins. Now I order Taco Salad with fajita meat on it. Their taco mean has a sugar in the sauce. I use some guacamole for dressing.

For a Mexican that's used to eating some sort of Mexican dish at least once a week you would think I would be very limited on what I would normally eat. Surprisingly that's not the case I still eat allot of Mexican dishes that are Low and No carb. Since your eating out it's gonna be slim pickings and you will most likely have to (special order). For example I like to eat Carne Asada plate and that usually comes with a side of beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, sour cream and two flour tortillas. Well I order special order that same dish, obviously with out tortillas, beans and rice, I usually bring my food home that way I can ditch there sauce and use some of my Tapatio Hot Sauce (0g carbs). For breakfast the Chorizo or Machaca plates with cheese, sour cream and guacamole and NO tortillas beans or rice.

Bon Appetit or Buen Provecho I should say.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I love the fajitas, so I decided I'm going to order them without the beans and rice, and no tortillas. They will be great with the guacamole and sour cream.

agian even though you have decided ask the waitstaff about the ingredients

Ask Dessertthorn about how shocked she was to discover IHOP puts pancake batter in their omlettes to make them fluffier. many folk had hidden carbs and craving foods in their "legal" meal cause they didn't ask first.

The mexican restaurant we always go to has grilled Steak and Shrimp. I eat that with the little side salad of shredded lettcue, guacamole and sour cream. Its delicious! They also have several other entree's that are Atkins perfect. Grilled fish, Grilled Shrimp, Grilled Chicken breast with salsa and cheese. I always have them hold the beans and rice and double up on the salad, never been a problem!

There's some tidbits there on the subject. What restaurant are you going to? Some now are catering to low-carbers with special entrees and drinks, and even listing carbs on menus.

I will definitely ask, 2big4... I appreciate your advice. And I didn't even think of that little salad, Mother.. that would be good. I'll be able to do this, I'm gaining confidence that I really can eat out!

It's a small local one in central Indiana - Real Hacienda. It doesn't list any counts on anything on the menu, but I have a copy and I'm scouring it for legal stuff.

Hmmmm... ok, the fajitas are marinated in a "special sauce" and I'll bet it has sugar. I'll be changing my mind now on what I'm going to get!
