  • Halfway to goal! And another wine question...

Yay, I officially weighed in at 244.6 this morning! 25.4 lbs. in 6 weeks--I'm very proud of myself. And yes, I'll be posting those before and afters in just 5 more pounds so you can all see how chunky I was(and still am).

I know that many of you don't agree with my outstpoken, arrogant and otherwise rebellious posting - don't let this one happy post confuse you! I'll be sure to return to my controversial ways tomorrow.

Regarding wine, I will be on my alcohol run in two weeks and plan to start consuming a glass or two of wine each week. We've been over statistics before and talked about how many people choose to skip this rung, but it is one that's very important to me and that I'm looking forward to(at every family gathering, Erin and I have been forced to simply sit there and watch everyone else at the table partake in some truly impressive stuff). So I'd like to hear about personal experiences with this rung. How it affected people in the short-term, long-term, what happens if you overdo it, etc.

All help, advice and story-sharing is appreciated.

I skipped it but one thing you need to know about it is alcohol metabolic byproducts that we urinate out will falsely react with keton stix and show a higher ketone level then you actually have if you use them so please don't judge your success at handleing a case of wine based on next day testing.

Many wines are low carb. make yourself a wine carb counter in a little booklet form and then use it to compare to the types being served. Making an informed choice will allow you to adjust your other carbs at the meal to stay below your level.

Be careful as many ADBBers have discovered on rung 5 a little alcohol goes a long way toward intoxication when we are low carbing.

I attend parties, functions, and social events on a very frequent basis - and not smoking or drinking has never affected how good a time I've had. Once others there learn about what I do, there are thankfully no questions of pregnancy or recovering alcoholism, and the no-drinking thing merely coincides with what I am about. But, of course, this is just me.

Do you miss spirits and beer, etc., or is it more that it feels awkward when everyone is drinking but you? I do get the impression that it is the former - just trying to contribute to the discussion.

And your body will burn the alcohol instead of fat, so you may experience a temporary stall for a day or two after imbibing, but if you are prepared for and can accept that, then you should be fine.

A bit of both, actually. I don't feel like sitting down on a Friday or Saturday night and shooting tequila so much but I WOULD like to be able to pour miself a nice glass of Merlot(or whatever the meal called for) on a Friday night to have with dinner. And, yeah, it'd be nice not to have to turn down the slew of costly wines that my parents seem to produce every time we go to their place for dinner.

I'm not a very social creature to begin with. So I typically avoid gatherings and didn't really have them in mind when I was posting this. But yeah, a vodka martini would probably be welcome were I to attend one.

Also, just so we're on the same page and have the same knowledge base, I'll plug the following tables:

Keep in mind that I'm not talking about more than one or two drinks here. So my metabolic rate won't be skewed by the alcohol for more than 2-5 hours. The carb count for red wine is on par with that of a cup of coffee with one spenda serving. And I find the caloric information to be refreshingly low.

EDIT: I wasn't able to properly copy/paste tables into this post for alcohol to carb ratios. If anyone has access to a chart that depicts this information, please post it!

Interesting. Think my employer would mind if I switched my morning cup of coffee to a glass of red instead? lol (I wish!)

I didn't skip the alcohol rung, but then I don't typically drink alcohol. I use it mainly for cooking, so the amounts of alcohol that ends up in me are relatively small amounts---even smaller than the amounts the American Heart Association calls "moderate" drinking.

Re: Halfway to goal! And another wine question...

I've been having a glass of wine (large) every evening more or less since hitting maintenance. So far so good and am maintaining fine. Think it would be a different kettle of fish if I were trying to lose though. Wine is the first thing I'd drop if I wanted to drop a few pounds.

Must say, the glass in the evenings is really lovely. Here in Italy wine is so good...not to mention cheap... that it was a big sacrifice giving it up. A good thing though, as the quantities were getting a little too high before Atkins. I come from a family of heavy drinkers. I find I can stick to the 'one glass per regular evening and one and a half at social occasions' quite easily. It's nice not to have to refuse all the time.

remeber that any blood alcohol chart you look at was done testing high carb eaters so their livers are processing different stuff them low carbers are.

I drink wine and I love it the dry reds and have been enjoying them since the fifth rung... no cravings, no bloat and great like Sally says to just sit and have a glass when all is said and done during the day...I did give it up for a long time thinking it was good to do that...but lately I am back to my glass a day watching the sun go down...no dessert or sweeter wines however ..the worst thing for me is beer I love it and can not drink it ...it gives me insane munchies!!!

Re: Halfway to goal! And another wine question...

Personally, I can't stand beer with the exception of Guinness. One of these days I'll figure out how to make a lower carb Guinness Punch.

Anyhow, I want to add this about cooking with alcohol. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't 'cook out'. There was a study done a few years ago that compared cooking methods and their percentages of remaining alcohol. Flambees retained the most, despite being flambeed. Stews that cooked a long time (hours) retained the least. The alcohol retention was also influenced by the amount of alcohol used, the dimensions of the pan used (narrow pots versus broad pots), etc.

So if you do cook with alcohol, go ahead. Just be aware that it doesn't all cook out.

Congratulations nOmatter on being half way to goal - Wooooo Hooooo!

Twenty-Five pounds in 6 weeks is awesome! I definitely will not skip the alcohol rung when I get to it and am hoping some other posts and story's are added to this thread. I love rum and diet coke but I can wait. I went 10 months without a drink once while on Weight Watchers.

It's my TOM so I'll have to look up your outspoken, arrogant, and otherwise rebellious posts for entertainment!

I'm surprised that more of it doesn't 'cook out' with a flambee. I mean, you're essentially BURNING the alcohol away, aren't you? But, damn, now that you mentioned cooking with it, you're making me want to do so. Wine applications are limitless in cooking and I've always been more of a hard alcohol drinker, even though I was raised partially IN a winery and have been exposed to it for as long as I can remember.

Oddly, I don't have much of a craving for getting tipsy on the weekends since I stopped doing so two months ago. But the idea of curling up with a martini or glass of red wine after work just sounds SO GOOD to me right now. Even moreso than having a favorite sweet or carby food I've been deprived of.
