Could someone who has lost weight by walking...walking...walking...let me know how far...how fast...how much??? I've always just dieted...never included exercise...I've recently started walking and have dropped a few quick pounds...is it the Atkins or the walking? Just curious...Thanx... NOTTHIN...

It's both. The exercise will increase your metabolism and use up your fat stores for energy. Atkins will use up your fat stores.

As for walking, if you're a complete newbie to exercise, take it easy and slowly build up. If you over-work your muscles too quickly, you might be too sore to continue your exercise.

So pick a distance, like walking around the block. Once you can do that easily, you can either increase your speed (ex. around the block in 30 minutes), increase the distance (ex. twice around the block), or both.

I'm acutally walking around a big block...then a little block...then real slow pace for about a street length for cool down...I've been a little sore, but nothing that's gonna stop me...the whole walk takes me about 25 minutes at this point...I figured I'd pick up the speed each week, and in a few weeks add distance...thanx for the advise...good to know walking helps the weight come off...

Oh yeah, walking is great exercise. 2Big walked her way to goal. I also walk.

Be sure to use good shoes and keep your safety in mind when you walk.

Can I tag a question onto this thread? I'm also a walker and I did A LOOOOONG walk yesterday. Over 3 miles total. Everything I ate was perfect, yet I put on 2lbs in the course of 24 hours. What's that?

LOL! No kidding! I was thoroughly bewildered by the scale this morning. If I walk that everyday I should be entirely jacked by the end of the summer.

Erin, I do always gain 2-3 lbs when beginning a new exercise routine or changing mine up, and then I lose 4-5 w/in a couple days. So yeah, it seems to take some fat with it

Walk Away the Pounds is a DVD by Leslie Sansone that I've used from almost the beginning, and it's been the only thing for most of it, I just started strength training about 6 weeks (5 lbs) ago. Anyway, I love it because I can do it at home, and it's a good workout but doesn't involve much coordination!!!

HTH, and GL on your journey to better health. I LOVE your expression in your March 2006 pic BTW.

What is it, a RACE? It's coming off, right????

                              Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

Notthin and Erin - I think that when you work out longer than usual, your muscles store water weight. I'm sure 2big or one of the other smarty pants will be along to expand on that. I'm not the Science Chick!

Personally, after my back injury, I was thrilled to be able to walk to the front door and back! Then, I went for the driveway. Then, the block (just to the corner and back). Then, around the block. Slowly, but surely, I built up my distance and speed. Now I typically walk a 15-minute mile - that's 4 miles per hour, baby!

Keep at it. Listen to your body. If you're feeling sore, ease off a little and re-approach the distance or speed!

By the way, I just past my 50 pound weight loss mark -- and I believe that walking played an equal role to my eating! I'm stronger and leaner than I was the last time I was this weight, because I'm working out.

Good luck, kids! I look forward to seeing big successes from both of you!
