    Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

Yep MOG the official exercise walking is done on the treadmill with the speed controlled and timed. I did lots of "free exercise" walking too like all the store aisles before buying anything at the grocery store and the whole mall between stores when I'm there and hiking on the trail in the woods behind my house.

I also added free weights fro the resistance part of the mandatory exercise part of Atkins but walking was and is my only cardio

They can. You can either hold them close to your body while walking. That will work your muscles isometrically. More about isometric exercises : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_exercise

Or you can do things like bicep curls, chest flys, etc. while you are walking. This kills two birds with one stone, so to speak, because while you are doing your cardio (the walking) you are also doing upper-body strength-training. Therefore, you won't have to spend another 30 minutes doing your upper body exercises after or before you walk.

The link to the Woman's Day walking program I posted uses weights.

As for the amount of weight....start off with one or two pounds per hand, and work your way up. Remember if you start carrying two 2-pound weight with you, your legs are carrying 4 extra pounds of weight---that will also help intensify your cardio/walking.

I'd question that Upperbody strength training workout as your form will be terrible on each move and you will be an injury waiting to happen if you do that while walking.

On the other hand using heavy hands type weights while walking will get you some added cal burning and work those muscles during your normal arm swing motion of walking.

Well, you have to be very aware of your form. But then, you need to be aware of your form anyway while you walk.

With the bicep curls---upper arms and elbows need to be kept against your body and the only thing moving will the the lower arms. For the chest fly, the movement has to be "shortened" and it's more of a drawing your elbows back and forward, rather than the "larger" movement when you do the more traditional chest fly.

                Re: Walking And Weight Loss???

I've been doing Atkins for over 1 year. I have lost 60 pounds. I have mostly just walked with some occasional bike riding. I am now up to 1 hour of walking three times a week at least. I walk one block kind of brisk and 1 block at a slower pace. That works for me.
