  • Low Salt Diet

    Hi all,

Is there a chart, like carbcount.pdf that includes salt intake? I'm sort of using Atkins, I'm 10 lbs overweight. A little more exercise and that will go in the next few weeks.

My problem is counting salt along with low carb diets. My BP has jumped up and dummy me didn't realize just how much salt is in some foods including vegetables. I take meds for BP and water retention and I see my doc next week. Till then at this writing weight is not a real issue cause I can loose that, keeping the BP down is a major factor. If that gets to high then I'm afraid to exercise. And I do know weight is a factor that affects my BP.

I agree with 2Big. The sodium content is listed on most nutrient databases.

You can also limit your salt by avoiding high-sodium processed foods, like bacon, and by not adding salt to your foods

Thanks, yes by salt I mean sodium. I do avoid processed foods but recently I found some fresh veggies were high in sodium. I really was looking for a desktop chart like Atkins except it doesn't show sodium.

Just a thought but I'd think sodium would have been a concern on the Atkins chart. I'm sure those with elevated BP and overweight would or should be thinking about sodium.

If someone knows of such a desk top chart I'd appreciate it.

        Thanks again, reeo

you can buy a book that has carbs sodium and other nutritional info.

Since Dr Atkins tells us to avoid processed foods he has taken care of the sodium issue. Very few foods on the lists have high sodium contents. With weight loss and the natural diuretic effects of the plan most Atkineers blood pressure goes down naturally.

I'm curious what fresh veggies are high in sodium?

Perhaps high was a bit strong but celery, beets, carrots, and spinach. Celery being the highest. I like celery and carrots daily but I'll just cut back some.

Well, of those veggies, only celery and spinach are allowed during Induction phase. Beets and carrots are allowed during the OWL phase.

not sure where you are getting your data from but the USDA says a whole cup of chopped up carrots is only 88 mg of sodium and celery chopped cup is only 81 mg and a whole cup of raw spinach is 24 mg.

He's getting his info from articles like this:

                  http://www.ndif.org/na9.html

The RDI for sodium is 1.2 grams (where's fawn when you need her, lol!) So if you cut out the higher sodium "extras" like condiments and processed foods, don't add extra salt to your food and stick to fresh veg and food, your sodium intake should be around that level.

yes but all the veggies are on the low sodium alternative instead side so I still don't see where the issues are.
