  • My Rant of the Week

So. I was doing really well. Being a good kid and all, not eating carbies. Not even from Drawer 2 (my co-workers' drawer that's stocked with all-sugar all the time). Anyway. So yesterday, I go to the cafeteria to get my salad (some spinach, cheese, 'shrooms, and a couple olives), and I see this little cup labeled "sugar-free jello parfait" I say "Awesome! Sugar-Free!". Now, I know some people stall, get cravings, everything like that, when they eat sugar-free jello. I don't, never have. So I eat my salad, then eat the parfait and I go, "this is freakin' good, I gotta get these more often! Amazing that they make sugar-free whipped cream just for us freaks!". Which got me to thinking, would they really take the time? Are they just doing it as an evil ploy? It's not paranoia if they're really out to get you... but by this point, I'd already eaten the whipped cream. So I go over today to get my salad... and I find one of the people who speaks English (fluently), and I ask her about the whipped cream... SHE'S OUT TO GET ME!!! THEY'RE ALL OUT TO GET ME!!! The whipped cream is pre-made and comes to them and it's normal all sugar loaded and everything. I don't go off on her about the insanity of it, not even when she politely tells me that I could always take the whipped cream off of it (but if I were to do that, why would I spend $2 on the parfait instead of the $0.30 it takes to make jello at home?!). I get back upstairs, and vent at a co-worker. The one who owns drawer 2. He says, "that's not false advertising, it's a sugar-free jello.... parfait". I rant, I carry on. I go to see my friend Maria (who is 5'2" and weighs 100 pounds. Literally.), she tries to understand, she says "it's the same as being non-fat, high sugar", I go, "yes, but those are totally separate things, they replace the taste of the fat with the taste of sugar, this one, they're stacking a cup of sugar on top of something they're advertising as being non-sugar!!!!"

Anyway. This is my rant. I thought perhaps someone here could understand.

Ggggggggrrrrrrrrrrr!!! I know it's a difficult concept. Sugar free means there's absolutely no sugar in it, on it or around it. Lotsa people just don't get it. I feel your pain. Speaking of jello....I finally found some sugar free pre-made jello. It's sweetened with......fructose and fruit juice instead of sugar!!!! Yay!! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I don't have jello. Oh, sorry, I think I started a mini-rant. Or at least a little hijack.

Uhm.. isn't it dangerous for diabetics if they label something "sugar-free" and it really has sugar in it?!

Yep, Origam, that would be dangerous for diabetics. Maybe that's something that could be brought to the cafeteria's attention -- a serious lawsuit for mislabeling!!

On the personal note, I'm not a big fan of Jello, so I'm never tempted by it. "Drawer #2" however would have been a problem!! There is nothing in my office with sugar in it . . . thank goodness I do all the shopping!! Everything is sugar-free or sweetened with Splenda.

Re: My Rant of the Week

I think most diabetics will have been carefully instructed to look for "safe for diabetics" on the label, and not to trust the terms "sugar free", "no added sugar" or "diet (whatever)".

Actually I was ranting to someone at work that I didn't realize is semi-diabetic and I said pretty much that and she's like, "I would have grabbed that and not even given it a second thought". I'm like, that's (*#&*&@# INSANE!!
