  • Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

First of all.. This site has been a godsend and I am glad to have found it.. I will give you a background on myself before launching into the questions I have

I have been on atkins for many years.. I was on it about 7 years ago and lost about 40 Lbs.. I am 5'7"..went from 260 Lbs to 220 (size 22 to about a size 20 where I stalled and couldnt lose anymore despite all I tried), went off the diet, went through ****, gained all of it back and more (got up to 290 Lbs and a size 26!!)

I decided once and for all to get healthy and start again.. Since then I have lost 70 Lbs and went from 290 to 220, (size 26 to a size 18 ..and.. stalled yet again. at the same weight I stalled the first time..

The first time I stalled I stayed at that weight for 3 months, and was at that time going to a fitness joint every morning, and being very very careful what I ate and I was feeling better but not losing weight or inches.. basically 220 was where my body wanted to be and size 20 was the size it wanted...

So now.. I have reached that point yet again.. this time.. for 4 months!!!! but instead of a size 20 I am a size 18 (though the same weight of 220). I will be restarting induction (though to be honest I never got too far out of induction to begin with).. not going above 10 carbs! and staying damn close to the 65% 30% 5% rule.. only varying by 1 or 2 % and im getting very frustrated!

I have joined a fitness club yet again, and this time will try circuit training.. I walk my Dog and am fairly active at work.. but I cannot seem to get lower then this and it is really frustrating me!

SO! here I am.. needing some help and advice..

My first question, is what else can I try to get below my stall!!!

My other question has to do with the dreaded "low carb candy bar"
One thing I WAS doing during my diet toward the end was trying those Sugar alcohol candies.. Atkins makes them as well as Russel Stover.. I was stalled anyhow and figured that I would try them. I know they make you stall, but do they totally throw the diet off? as in.. do you have to restart the diet with induction once you've had them?? I will no longer eat these, they taste good but all they do is make me crave more and the gas is horrible..

I mentioned above that I am restarting induction.. the reason for this is the candies listed above.. I dont WANT to have to redo induction, so I am on here asking for advice on that as well..

Anyhow.. thank you for your time, hopefully my initial post wasnt too long or too confusing

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

If your not going above ten carbs then you never left induction to begin with.

The candy is EVIL and should be eliminated completely to avoid stalling. I know lots of folks on this board will tell you they stalled due to the frankenfood junk. You might try changing your workout some to push through the stall as well. Do different types of exercise like swimming, weight training, or biking, things you don't normaly do. Your body will get used to doing certain exercises or even doing them on specific days and will resist losing. This used to work for me.

Welcome back and hang in there! Stall doesn't mean stop.....

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

Try the strict whole food approach to Atkins and avoid the processed foods. I think, from my experience, those can impede weight loss when all else is going well. Secondly, my suggestion is not to make this about keeping your carbs at 10 a day. You are allowed more so take advantage of the season with fresh veggies, salads, etc.. It becomes more important as you move to OWL and measure your CCL. You will get used to the additional carbs. And of course, drink lots of water.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

Definately ditch the bars and sweeties...they are bad for you as well as giving you wind!

What sort of exercise were you doing at the fitness place? I would suggest getting a personal trainer to do a programme for you, a fat burning one and maybe change it every 3 months or so so that you dont get bored.

        Drink lots of water!

I'm not sure if I agree on the 10 carbs a day thing. Induction is 20 carbs and this is from veggies. If you are only having 10 carbs a day then maybe that is why ur body is stalling? I think you should do some meal plans with 20 carbs and use Fitday to track it and see how you go!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

I tend to avoid processed foods, sticking mainly to baked chicken and such, and I do drink tons of water. I drink either water or crystal light.

I was going with the stricter approach with the induction mainly to see if I could get out of my stall, but perhaps I am going the wrong direction with it. Its just hard to get myself to try it.. My head tells me "well if 20 carbs isnt working, how can 30???" so I dropped it to 10.

As far as the fitness place.. the first time I belonged was an actual fitness club.. i went 5 days a week.. mondays wed and fridays I worked cardio, then each day I would work a different target area.. arms legs and so on.. I was doing at least 40 min of cardio then the target areas...

Now I joined Curves which is more of a circuit training.. keeping the heart rate up and working different areas of the body.. but with this place.. you go every other day since you work ALL areas of your body and therefore need a day of rest in between. Its definitely different then what I am used to and I'm not sure how I like it.. I will stick to it though and see if it helps.

I just signed up for fitday, but have yet to really use it.. I will try that as well

          Thank you for your replies

Fitday is a great tool, Coastgirl. It really helps you see where percentages and carbs counts are. Keep eating the veggies like you should, keep drinking your water and exercising and you'll start losing again.

            Hang in there!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

move on! move on! First off, if you are still in Ketosis then there is no need to go back into induction. Start up the rungs of OWL. I have seen this time and time again, people are afraid of OWL. BUT, I have seen time and time again where people move up the rungs in OWL and lose!!!! Less is not always better. The first rung is more vegies..... and I do not believe any of us became obese from eating vegies!
Curves...........you can go everyday! Just keep in mind the back to back days you will be getting more of a aerobic/cardio work out, as a muscle group that has been worked and worked very hard needs 48 hours to re coop.

Hi all - I'm fairly new here and keep seeing fitday mentioned. Can you please fill me in on what this is?

Thank you - you're all the sweetest things a gal could need so to heck with the low carb candy bars!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

Fitday.com is a place to record what you eat in a day and it has other tools.

Also Coastgirl, sometimes eating too much protein can be bad. If we eat too much protein, we will convert the excess to stored fat. How is your fat content? If you are doing more of a lower fat Atkins you won't do as well either.

Good luck, congrats on what you have done so far!!!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

G-Mom: Thank you for filling me in on fitday. I went to the website and got all settled in and started my recording with my breakfast this morning. It's also a great way to keep track of your water intake too.

I have one question though. I have read several of the Atkins books awhile ago and I don't remember this but maybe I need to reread them again. I keep seeing references on ADBB about percentages - what is the recommend percentages during induction? Fitday is going to make it easy to keep track and I want to make sure that I"m staying within the guidelines.

Thanks so much and you look GREAT!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

For induction you should try to stay around 65% fat / 30 % protein / 5% carbs.

Welcome to the board and best of luck to you!

Re: Hi I'm new and Have a few questions

                        I'm 66% fat/30% protein/4% carb for today but I still have 2 carbs left.

What happens if you go over your 20 carbs for the day - not major but by 2 - 3 carbs?

I haven't yet but I'm so darn paranoid that I panic if I think I'm even close to my 20.

Don't worry about trying to get all 20 in. There's no minimum, it's okay to not have 20, that's just the max we can have. And remember it's net carbs. If you had 22 total carbs for the day but you had 7 grams of fiber, you end up with 15 net carbs.

Sounds like you're doing just fine!
