Re: Forbes: Atkins 3rd most expensive diet

When I am in deep ketosis, I have to make myself eat. I eat less just in general. They are right. Cheap chicken is still more expensive than cheap fat-free pasta. But, size 22 pants cost more than size 12's. And I don't know about the rest of you but Jeans only last a year at size 22 because I wear the inner thighs right out of them by rubbing the material together when I walk. At size 22, I would break a pair of shoes in no time at all. And then there is the medicine everyone mentioned previously. On Atkins, I don't eat out as often and cook at home. Cheaper. Yes, I agree, that article is a crock. Laughable. Unresearched. Uninformed.

AND! I don't spend $2 a pound on chicken breasts.
      1. They don't have as much flavor as the rest of the chicken. Every time I have bought the big frozen bags, the breast have been of an unnatural monster proportions (hinting toward growth hormone use) and tough as h3ll, no matter what cooking method is used.
      2. I will buy a whole chicken ($2.50 on average) and take 15 minutes and break it down into the bits and pieces I want to cook with. Or throw the whole d@mn thing in a crockpot on high for 3 hours and then bone it into easy to use pre-cooked chicken.
3.I have the luck of living in chicken country and am able to get fresh, not previously frozen chicken, at my locally owned grocer. The ad for today has split whole chicken breasts at 99 cents a lb. Yeah, it takes about 120 seconds to get the meat off the rib cage, (I like using my knives! *evil laugh*) but buy a pack and break it down, simmer the bones in water and I have saved 3 bucks on chicken stock. You can also save your celery tops and veggie scraps and toss it in for extra salt free flavor in your broth.
      Okay... I will quit ranting.
Good thread though. Most expensive diet, my shrinking patootie.

The only special things you HAVE to buy on Atkin's is the book & some vitamins. Sure, eating healthy costs more than the $.99 drive thru menu or filling up on rice & bread, but you are eating healthy!!! I'm pretty cheap on my diet and mostly stick to fish, roasts, chicken, & sausage, a few fresh veggies, & cheese. I've found my grocery bill has only gone up by about $10 a week for a family of 4. I replaced the pre-made frozen lasagnas with fresh meat, that is less expensive. Take out all the junk foods & replace them with string cheese, and such, and save by drinking water over soda. It all equals out.

All I know is Atkins can be done on the same budget and with variety! Of coarse eating healthy is going to cost more.

Funny how it used to be only rich people could afford to be fat (e.g. King Henry the 8th) well, haven't we equalized things!!

I just wonder how they figured the prices. They probably think that we all eat those lobster salads daily (I know I do, how about all of you? ), as well as consume several Atkins shakes, and snack on Advantage bars!

I haven't actually EATEN lobster lately (read- 6 yrs) but I did lick the glass to the lobster tank the other day, that was free, but they did ask me not to shop the seafood section anymore. Something about scaring the other customers...

We are talking about an author who doesn't know what orange roughy is. I doubt they spend a lot of time cooking at home. I don't skimp on the food budget because Atkins is easier to stick with if you have a variety of things to eat. It might be orange roughy with lemon pepper one week or salmon with lemon juice and greek seasoning the next. Roast beef and chicken are wonderful, but lamb and stir fry are also on our menu. Barbeque it, stuff with cheese, tie it up with spices, bake a burger wrapped in bacon, and those carbs seem bland and boring.

Sorry I wasnt having a rant or anything. Its just how I feel and how I think the Government should do something about the price of healthy food against junk food.

Lobster?! Yuck....not a seafood fan myself. Obviously I'm saving $25 a week from not eating it!

I love lobster but am too poor to buy it. Hence, the licking of the lobster tank. And Chris, you are just too sweet to worry over little ol' me! But don't worry, my behavior has not been fatal yet! 31 yrs and still kickin!

hmmmm....two dozen eggs; lettuce; and cans of tuna. Usually sale items. That's enough to keep me going.

                        It only gets pricey w/steaks.
