Re: Add more fat even if it's already very fatty?

    I can't say that I *never* crave/miss sugar.

I have a pretty good handle on being able to tell myself "no" though. That's a HUGE change from other "diets" I've been on. AND when I did "Joy's version of Atkins" my first time around...I craved much, much more than I do now. That was back when I allowed the bars, shakes and sugar free candies and such. This time around, I don't use any of those types of products, nor do I use aspartame. While I'm not 100% crave free...I would say EASILY 90% crave free on most days. Same goes with my not smoking.

What's nice is being IN CONTROL of those cravings. I NEVER felt that way on Weight Watchers or any of the low-fat/portion controlled diets I've been on.

I never actually feel like I'm going to cheat but I guess I miss the feelings I used to get when having fun with friends and...eating/drinking. Since having fun with friends normally meant going out to a restaurant or bar I think I'm missing that part of things. For all the people who want to jump out and say you can still do these things on Atkins...sorry, I WILL disagree with you. It's just not the same when everyone around you is drinking and/or eating forbidden things. Sure I can sit there and drink my water but uh, yeah, not quite the same. I'm not talking about getting wasted either. Adults drink and I miss being able to have one or two drinks socially (among other things). No one can have it all I guess.

ah but soical drinking is only OWL rung 5 away.

and you could be the designated driver and be sure all your friends get home safely while you can't.

Sitting here thinking of this made my mind wander to the holidays. Thanksgiving with no pumpkin pie and stuffing and all that other awesome stuff? Christmas with no Christmas cookies? This will definitely be an adjustment.

Okie. So. Holidays. You can make pumpkin pie and stuffing, and awesome other things, you can make sweets to have instead of cookies. and remember, it doesn't mean that you can't have them when you go up the rungs of OWL... this isn't like, you can NEVER have pumpkin pie again. I think first you should ask yourself if losing the weight and being healthy is worth not eating a pie or a plateful of cookies. You're not taking them away completely or forever, just temporarily until you're *healthy enough to eat them* well, and control yourself if you're like me where you won't say Oh!! Cookies!! and eat 10 of them.

You'll like the end result though, which totally makes it worth it.

I'm already liking the results so that always helps.

I will now (for no good reason) list things I will miss. These are not things I ate on a regular basis but would enjoy from time to time:

                    Milk & cookies
                    Ice cream
                    Alcohol
Pastries made by real pasty chefs i.e. no real self-repecting pastry chef would bake low carb
                    Potatoes
The real taste of sugar vs. the synthetic taste of Splenda

This is not meant to anger people. This is a support website. I need to just talk it out

In the end, you don't have to be without anything in moderation. The point is learn what your body will tolerate in time. Shoot one of our past admins used to comment on eating a candy bar every once in awhile. The point is you have to know who you are and what you can tolerate. Wait til to you get to the appropriate rung, and then have your trial.

It's up to you. For me playing close to the fire, doesn't hold the appeal as it may to some. Maintenance is what you make of it, but then again is your ultimate success too.

I don't take risks at this point since I still want to aggressively reduce my weight. Once I'm a few phases higher I'll experiment more.

The low carb recipes I've made so far have been awesome. Very tasty and creative. However, nothing will ever make me feel like it's "real" cooking. It's like sidestepping how to really do something to get results that fit our lifestyle. Low carb cooking is really no different than all the low fat products we see. It's not real. It's a means to an end.

Uhm. I'm sorry, I must have missed some important post or something... Low carb is real. It's not something you go on for 2 days or weeks to lose 5 lbs and then go back immediately to eating a whole pizza in a sitting. I don't really get what you mean by "real cooking", the ingredients are the same as they would be if you were making it with the impression it was just "normal food", and it's made the same way as if it wasn't "low carb".

It's real in the sense that it's a lifestyle and not a temporary diet alteration but fake in the sense that you have to alter time-honored & tested resipes to make it work. Pumpkin pie was mentioned above. Yes there is a low carb way to make it and I'm sure it doesn't completely suck but it will not be the same as say a recipe handed down from grandma to daughter or something to that effect. That's all I'm saying.

when you get to OWL you can cook most anything if your body will handle the food choices. grains are a part of Atkins if your body will handle it. the only thing you cut out in Atkins other then what your body can't handle is the refined processed stuff so whole grain pie crust is very doable. the only thing in my families pumpkin pie I subbed wasa the sweetener and I really have develeoped a taste for loving what I call pumpkin butter which is pumpkin mixed with a little cream cheese and pie spices. I spread it on my pancakes eat it on a spoon as a snack. you will be a mazed at how sensitive to sugar your tongue will become whne you are not ODing on sugar every day.

You can be a half empty or half full person lament what you can't do or celebrate what you can. Just think of yourbody as allergice to those foods you can't tolerate any more. they make you break out in FAT!
